New Free Gift: 1 Week Gold Account Medal

1 Week Gold Account Medal
We know how frustrating the past few weeks have been. As a thank you to users for being pretty patient with us lately with all the various issues, there’s a new free gift. We appreciate users reporting issues, reaching out to us on social media, testing things for us, and more. <3

This medal will be available as a free gift for roughly a week, so get it while you can!

thanks for the gold account medals it's really nice since a lot of people are out of work right now (including me) and it saves me a bit of money on that end <3

@Valiska
I actually thought it was best to have a quest-a-thon after Vesnali so we could at least have one holiday that's calm.

"Your personality is to jump in and give something new a shot, even if you're not sure it's ready and the optics for failing aren't great. Unfortunately, that often results in finding out what's wrong the hard way"

Yeah, that is what happened this Masq. And boy was it a doozy.

What was the original timetable for the new wardrobe being released? I think that even if was necessary to release the wardrobe early, it could have waited till after Masq. But then, what about the glitch and the lack of backups for wardrobe items? Perhaps there might have been less backlash because many users would have been offsite and not heard about it until after everything had cooled down.

But yeah, I'll support the all weekend quests. Use them to test the site's stability.

I like @Valiska 's idea of compromising and doing a test-run "all weekend quests" before going for an *actual* questathon :) Or maybe some other similar event/thing that'll be a good stress-tester but also have little chance of backfiring. Don't get me wrong, I'd love a questathon, but I admit it may not be the best time to hold one right now.

@Selkhe
No problem at all, it’s not a very convenient color and I often find myself clicking random parts of posts like “oh is that text vaguely brown?”

Come to think of it, there’s probably someone out there who’s come up with a code to change the link color.

Selkhe

@reaction

oops, my bad, thank you... didnt see the hyperlink color.

@Selkhe
Click on where it says “new free gift” in the sentence, “...with all the various issues, there’s a new free gift.” The hotlinks on this site are notoriously hard to find, lol.

Alternatively, CLICK HERE. :3
(Hope my URL works!)

Sorry, maybe I don't understand how the site works, what do we have to do to get the medal?

@Keith I understand the coding and illustration for a plot probably does take months (more on that later), and that a Quest-a-Thon involves flipping switches.

I still don't think this is a good time for a Quest-a-Thon because the last time we had one, there was heavy lag, and the site was fairly stable at that time, which it hasn't been recently (as in the last month, not the last 2 days). While it might be a good speed test for the changes you've made, if a Quest-a-Thon were to result in a week of heavy lag, I believe that would be extremely bad for user morale (and user retention) at this point in time.

We're still recovering from everything that went wrong during Masquerade, especially the wardrobe glitches during a holiday that's all about dressing up and the failed server move that made the site unusable for days. I understand why we don't have all our stuff back yet, but I also empathise with people who are suffering from negative chill.

I'm saying this with all the love in the world, Keith. If I didn't care about this site, I wouldn't bother to say anything. There are other things I could be doing right now. Before you start something that will really stress the servers, please take a look at where you are with repairing the damage that's already been done over the past two months and ask yourself if you have really, truly, found all of the glitches and bugs.

Your personality is to jump in and give something new a shot, even if you're not sure it's ready and the optics for failing aren't great. Unfortunately, that often results in finding out what's wrong the hard way, and a lot of people are completely out of slack right now for a lot of reasons, some of which have nothing to do with Subeta, like "how am I going to pay bills" and "holy crap how do homeschoolers not go insane?" and some of which have everything to do with "when was the last time we had a site-wide event that the site didn't break?"

If you want to test the servers out with quests, I'd try "all weekend quests" first. The reason for this is that unlike a Quest-a-Thon, where there is a negative consequence for not reaching the goal, there are only positive consequences. Rather than pushing themselves to do 100-150 quests every day for a week or else we will lose the game, people will do more quests than normal but not too many quests more than normal. If that causes problems, you'll know to put off the Quest-a-Thon a bit longer.

Now onto the plot thing. As a person who's run tabletop campaigns and online journal/forum based role-playing games that lasted years...if writing the plot is taking a month, I am very sure that there are a lot of people on the site who are really good at coming up with plots quickly, but are not also artists or coders, so they're not on your staff.

I'd love to help out if I weren't one of the people who's having to work harder than usual instead of one of the people who is bored out of their mind right now. I know there are others. I absolutely understand that you can't afford to hire anyone to be an official plotmaster/storyteller, but I am also totally sure that you could get volunteers for it, and they'd be delighted that somebody asked.

*stamps foot* i WaNtEd A mOnTh GolD aCcOuNt MeDaL!1!!1!!

also, did you know that we want more communication? has anyone mentioned that yet?

1

Keith

@Valiska A quest-a-thon requires us flipping a switch to turn it on, and come up with prizes.

A plot requires us to spend 6 months writing, illustrating, and creating the story. They aren't really interchangeable :(

Efferd

@Keith (sorry for the long comment) Yes, and the changelog is nice to have, but this was communicated via an official news post on the 12th only (I know it was started earlier and I don't remember exactly in which order things were communicated where - but on the 12th it was first linked in news post comments of the news from the 9th by users). It would have been nice to have a short and simple news post just saying that you're working on things. I (and probably other people as well) was starting to worry about the future of subeta at that point and some other users rage quitted I think, which could have been prevented easily by such a news post. Now don't get me wrong, I understand that it must have been an incredibly stressful time and I'm glad I was not the one who had to fix it, but I really don't understand why it was not possible to do a short news post (maybe also stating that you did not only do backups but a server change as well - this wasn't communicated either). I also know that you did some announcements in the forums, but if it takes ages to load only one page, lots of people did not have access to those like to the news.
Either way, as I mentioned earlier I still like to be here, so thanks for the effort.

Keith

@Efferd We heard this feedback, and created this changelog page toward the end of those dates (after we thought through how to approach the feedback and what we could do) and plan to do something very similar in the future!

We linked to it from the news, forums and in the header bar so I'm not sure how else we could have gotten that information out!

Quest-A-Thon plase. We need it now more than ever.

Efferd

I'm going to be a party pooper and say that I'd appreciate continuous communication during such crises much more than a ton of gifts later. These days between the 6-12 April were the worst, news being posted on the forum when it was impossible to load, shorter dancing times being promised and not being implemented at first... I do appreciated the gifts like anyone else, but they leave a bitter aftertaste. (Going to add that I'm planning to stay here for another 13 years if possible, but communication is not exactly one of subeta's strong suits.)
11

Sneaky

Quest-A-Thons don't usually happen until summer, you know. But it would be nice to have one this year, especially since we don't know how long this hard time will last. It could be between Vesnali and Neugarten because the latter holiday doesn't have an exact month, the schedule just says "Sometime in the summer." And then after, maybe there could be another one of those Gelatin Wars.

Valiska

Thank you very much.

No quest-a-thon just yet, okay guys? I'm a healthcare administration worker and I'd like to be able to actually DO a quest when I'm not at work. I work from home several days a week because I'm not a doc, but I do have to actually go to work at work some days too.

Last time we had a quest-a-thon was long before the recent site issues and the lag was so bad I could only do quests at either 3-4 AM or during working hours on breaks (which I don't get when I'm actually on site these days because pandemic).

Both of these are a no-go for essential workers right now. I know you're bored as shit and so am I when I'm not on site, some days, but...

How about a PLOT, instead?

There is a lot less lag involved with those, because they don't involve hours of grinding, so those of us who have to be at work during working hours or be available at home to work during working hours on demand can still do them. Plus they are a lot more fun and interesting than questing. Questing is not what I consider super exciting.

I do however think a week or even a weekend of all weekend quests would be lovely in helping us get the earnings we missed out on during lag hell.

I'd think a quest-a-thon after Vesnali would be best. I'd like a peaceful holiday without drama and massive errors. :)
