@Thia - It's because it from the French phrase En plein air. Plein air painting, is the act of painting outdoors.

I'm a little late, but what is "plein"? I would have thought it was a typo, except that it's both in the item name and the title of news post.
Google isn't much help as the results don't really make sense in this context.
