🔒 Authentication Fixes

If you've been having issues logging in for the last two weeks, I'm incredibly sorry. After making the change to the new authentication system, a (very large) handful of users could no longer access their account, and the new lost password flow didn't work correctly.

I've fixed the issue, so if you're still not able to log in, please make your way to kumos login page and start the lost password flow. You'll get an email, and be able to set a new password.

We've created a new free gift page that gives you a visit for the bath house days, updates your melody achievement and some CSC for the trouble. I know this doesn't give the prizes for those bath house / melody days, but we'll be making those items available (like always! we hate gateekeeping melody items!) soon.

Bathhouse finally unstuck for me. I think I was given 3 or 4 extra and it seemed to be stuck for those 3 or 4 days. So, while the intention was there to help add days that people missed, it just kinda canceled itself out. I didn't miss any days to begin with because I was always able to log in so this doesn't matter to me but I have a funny feeling that's whats happening to people. 15 extra days = 15 days it's gonna be stuck basically? I could be wrong.

I am doing absolutely nothing on this account and plant to abandon/delete it ASAP, but no matter what I do I still cannot access my original account, allnightforever. So while I'm appreciative of the fix and finally being able to get back in, this was still incredibly frustrating. I've been trying to make my way back into the site after being gone for ages, and it's disappointing to see that it's a lot of "same problems, different day" that it was years ago. I'm going to stick around because like before, there are elements of the site that I enjoy and I miss the social aspect of the friends that I made years ago, it's just sad to know that I need to go in with the same measured expectations of before. (And yes I'm glad that "this is supposed to be the big fix to fix it all moving forward!" but I also feel like I've been here long enough to remember multiple similar instances. Trying to stay optimistic, it's just hard.

https://kumos.subeta.net/free-gift is the 404-ing link.

(and if you tarry too long on a kumos login page, you might see a "419 page expired" - in that case go back, refresh the page with the login/pass textbox and try again quicker :D ).

Whatever did you use to get that button? I have never had a problem with any of the free gifts - but the kumos-based "open gift" button behaves like I'm not there.

I've liked Subeta's interface for its simplicity (after all, if I wanted World of Warcraft, I'd go there) and if all buttons move from a working
'<a href="/explore/gift.php" class="ui button large">Free Gift</a>'
to
'<button class="btn btn-primary" wire:loading.attr="disabled" wire:click="openGift">🎁 Open Gift</button>' that simply ignores my clicking, I won't be able to do anything at all :,(

Console shows "SyntaxError: invalid regular expression flag s app-5b235b59.js:6:80327" , if that's any use... But I have a feeling that that "wire" thing is some new-fangled API that doesn't respect browsers older than 6 months and that basic incompatibility is what the problem is, regardless of wording :((

I was one of several folks who was locked out of subeta & unable to reset my password.

I got locked out on New Year's Eve, and while I was a little bummed about missing the last Melody prize, I wasn't too torn up over it.

Honestly, I was more sad about losing my bathhouse streak-- but hey, now I have it back! :D And gosh, 500 csc, too... that's so kind of you!!! Thank you so much, I (and several other folks, I'm sure) deeply appreciate it <3

My partner is trying to sign in to the new site, it wants them to reset their PW but when they go to hit reset PW, it says an email sent but their email doesn't have anything. We're wondering if maybe the email on their account is outdated since it's been literal years since they made their account, but they can't log into the legacy site to change it or check. What should we do?

I will say I was one of the people that has not been able to log in since the 23rd and found it very frustrating that support was not helpful at all, they responded one time telling me to delete cookies and cache and that it should work never responded again. With a glitch this large they should of known what the problem was and just been honest and told us you were working on it to fix it.

No, click around some more. I didn't miss my melody or bathhouse streaks and I was still able to claim the 500CSC. I got the 404 error page too at first. I don't know exactly what I did but I clicked around some more and managed to get it working.

Not to complain, but, the users who missed bathhouse and melody will get their prizes and 500 csc. What about the rest of us, who had a hard time logging in, or had other issues with bank pages, errors and unable to change their email and unable to purchase csc don't get anything?

TLDR: I've tried to migrate us from using md5, the incredibly, horribly, outdated hashing algorithm that is now easily breakable for years. Every time, we've kept a bridge to the old passwords for folks who don't update, and just use newer algorithms on new passwords. That finally came to bite us, and I had to move to remove all of the md5 hashed passwords from our database. We didn't have a security breach, but it just needed to be done.

Your password in the database is stored as a hash of what you type in when you log in (or created when you registered). We never see what the actual password is after you log in, we just compare it with the hash in our database. That makes upgrading it to newer schemes very difficult without forcing everyone to reset their password.

There were a group of users who'd been in one of those migrations, and this new method didn't work (just completely error'd in a way I couldn't see in my tests). That's resolved now, and all of those accounts can get new, very very secure hashed passwords in the database.
