Woot! I got it right! Okay, a little explanation to how I got it: First I broke apart the trivia until I understood it full, then I looked for the diphthong phoneme which was the sound "ow" in "owl". Then I looked up the IPA symbol for "ow" which happened to be "a" and this "u" that looked like an upside down omega. The "u" was the second symbol that the question is asking for. So I did a google search, copy and pasting that funky "u" and got the wiki page for it, which states that it's informally known as a "horseshoe u."

A bit more research, even after submitting an answer has me believing that I got this one wrong. In my haste, I accepted the word of a linguistics major and was led astray. Oh well, c'est la guerre.

Although I'm not going to answer this one (already got the feather from one of the previous trivias, although the 10k would be nice), I want to wish good luck to those of you who are attempting it. I think the controversy is over whether or not 'futhark' can stand for the plural as well, like sheep. Not that the trivia question was edited.
i wasn't "trying hard" to pick out issues with the trivia. whats wrong with calling a spade a spade? i admitted the trivia was a darn good one! heck, i probably got it wrong... its not like i spend my time trying to ruin a trivia experience. i merely pointed out that i had difficulty reading it. clearly remarking my own error. eeesh. =/

Deb is right, that plural thing was there the whole time. I put futhark and submitted it, and only afterward did I remember I had to make it plural. it's an honest mistake that many other people made too and that's not the staffs fault. having said that, I do hope I got this one right, I've been on a failing streak lately :/
There actually is nothing grammatically incorrect about the question. Also, achieved has a somewhat different meaning than arrived at. I really have absolutely no idea whatsoever where people are getting these notions... Once again, just like the one prior to it, the runes Trivia WAS NOT edited/altered in any way after it went up; it ALWAYS said "Plural" in the Format area. I'm getting just a tad weary of people reading too fast and missing key words in the question and then claiming that the Trivia was altered. It wasn't. And none have been, other than basic misspellings, and adding an occasional forgotten submitted by line, in months now.

i just picked the area that gave me trouble in reading. 'can be arrived at just through properly done research' is a bit more confusing than saying 'can be achieved with proper research', imo. i said it wasn't a big deal. i found the person entering the trivia trying to make a jab at complainers. i was merely pointing out that even the anonymous can't all be perfect. no worries
I still can't see anything wrong with "can be arrived at", but I guess everybody needs to pick at something these days. Some evil wizzard must have cast a spell...
