Avatar Update

We have removed the 64x64 from the site (including the news) and have replaced them with Headshots of your Human Avatar.
If you've noticed, the site is moving considerably faster, because instead of having to save and load (And query the database for) both versions of the avatars, we only have to do this for one :)

Let me explain this, in a technical way. As best as I can - to answer the questions that have been posted up to this point.

The avatars were located in one folder, that was over 13GB in size when it was just removed. That means that each time an avatar was displayed on the site (the 64x64 one) it had to search that directory for the right image (which caused crashing in NFS) as well as query the user database, for information on which avatar was the users.

With the HA only version, it queries from the HA image folders (which are separated) and there are no MySQL queries, as the information is already cached for each user.

That means that we're saving 13GB worth of file searching, and a database query to the most important table in the database, for each avatar load.

Having the option to turn this off would be good for me as well. If it was one of my pets, it would have some appeal, but seeing more of my HA yet again---well, that just doesn't thrill me at all.

Keith, make a poll, with the head or without the head (meaning nothing, out, gone, nada, no square, zip)
0

Suzaku

Okay, I don't fully get it... but the end result I understand.<br />
<br />
I read as: "I make avatars go poof so site go faster"<br />
<br />
That's about the size of it, isn't it? ^__^;<br />
<br />
My HA is made of Phoenix and win, so it's all good in the end.
0

Keith

I'm going to lock this, because clearly people are skipping over the technical standpoint I'm trying to make, and just <strong>whining</strong>.<br />
<br />
Very few of you have offered alternatives, and those of you that have - I've replied to with my thoughts.<br />
<br />
This is not your venue to go GOD I HATE YOU KEITH WHY DON'T YOU EVER LISTEN TO THE USERS. Or repeate yourselves "why wasn't this polled" 500 times without reading the reasoning behind it.<br />
<br />
Locked.
0

Dicatae

man... just put your avy on your lookup layout and it's kinda like it never left.... i've got mine
0

Tammy

Is there a way to turn off the HA headshot in the basic user info on your profile? It's messing with my layout, I don't wanna see mine on my own profile.

Question: How does having or not having a 64 x 64 avatar make or not make this a petsite?
0

Megadeth_682

Like this site wasn't focused on HAs enough. I deleted my HA in silent protest.
0

Nyaochan

yeah...if anything...I'm lagging very very severely now. I'm certainly not noticing any improved speed.
0

Mandy

Aw, I'll miss the 64x64 avs. But I guess if it makes the sitefaster its ok. Saves me the job of making thatnew avI was goingtodo.

I agree, there's too much hype about the HA's now. I personally don't care about mine because for one, I have no idea what to dress mine up with (due to me not caring, most likely), or the desire to waste money on wearables. And also, I like this site for what it is: a virtual pet/item site. Not a social network like Gaia, Myspace, etc.</blockquote><br />
<br />
Clothing is an item - to use on your human avatar.<br />
<br />
We aren't putting focus on the Human Avatars, just applying them to parts of the site that they fit best. It didn't make sense having two sets of different types of avatars, and it also effected the server very badly.<br />
<br />
There were over 200,000 images in that one folder, which was causing problems with the server. The database load has dropped by <strong>half</strong> since this change, and the Apache servers (that search through images) are FAR less loaded now. <br />
<br />
This has been a good change, server, and speed wise for Subeta.

Awwwh. <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/smiley_sadface.gif" border="0" /> I really loved my 64x64 avatar..
0

Meagan_Madness

Sprinter...every site these days are social networks. If it has a forum it'll be social. If you can communicate with other users it's social. There was no way that Subeta was not not going to be a social network

Yanno, people claim they don't think this is a petsite, then when they put in changes like the feeding your pet requirement to get to things like the wardrobe, people complained then too.

Actually my dialup is trying to crap out on me in this news thread now that so many avatars are loading. <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/smiley_sadface.gif" border="0" /> So that's a big dowside for dialup users once enough people have posted. Maybe have a no avatar at all poll like someone else said.<br />
<br />
Anyway, bye. :3

Ugh, well this sucks. I love my 64x64 avvie. I think there should have been a poll or something first.
0

Orchipea

Keith, is there any way we can disable the one in our user info widget? It looks funny showing my HA there twice, even if the smaller one is just the head... but I don't want to delete that widget as it has my online status.
0

Edward

Subeta isnt a petsite to me anymore o-o Everything revolves around HAs. Even the economy to an extent.
0

Gem

I don't see the headshots.. O.o <br />
<br />
BUT, since we now have headshots of people's HA, could the HA PLEASE be removed from the info boxes that show up when you hover on someone's name? There is now absolutely NO reason for them to be there. <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
0

Meagan_Madness

for those who say its slow..give it time. For some it will work right away then others. Everyone doesnt have the same type of internet or computer so out comes will be different.<br />
<br />
Try quitting the internet and reopening it.
0

Blake

Also, I am extremely skeptical that this will prevent downtime of any kind.
0

I guess you cant please all of the people all of the time. Good job in trying to make things faster and better, and pooh to the complainers.

=( To be honest, it makes me sad. I really liked my avatar--it was a custom made for me by someone I love very much and seeing it gone is not very pleasant.
0

if you haven't cleared the cache on your browser your avatars might be in there - it's worth a shot if you didn't save a copy
0

I am not seeing any HA headshots in place of the 64x64 icons.

I don't have an avatar or a HA anyway, so yeah...xD Can't say I care too much. Although...it does seem rather pointless. Wouldn't it be easier to just show the whole HA if you're going to show the head anyway? *shrug* Whatever works, I suppose.

I shall miss my bloodred warador avatar. I had someone make it for me before the waradors were revamped, when they all had the same staff. But since I still have a copy of that av saved on my computer, I'm good <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />.

0

Milkyushigirl

the placement of the HA icon avatar on the profiles is in a icky spot if you ask me
0

SeoRa

If you want your icon, I suggest putting them in a forum set or on your profile~ Seriously, this isn't a big loss if it means Subeta won't be down so much. You can work around it if you're this upset about it. I for one think it's a good solution. (so, nyeh!)<br />
<br />
---<br />
<br />
I agree. I was always upset because the site would always be down right in the middle of me doing something. So I hope with these changes the site will crash/lag less
0

0

That's what I was wondering too, MidnightShadow- if having the HA would slow the site more since the images are bigger. It wouldn't be taking up filespace, but it would slow the commenting a lot here. (like it is now for me xD; )
0

I'd be upset but my HA is just so damn sexy, I can't stop staring at it.

I have no problem with doing this and speeding up site performance. The crops of the HAs aren't always the best unfortunately, but c'est la vie.

It only shows the head though. And you know the more items you wear on your HA, the larger the file size. So if I'm right about this, then we're loading everyone's full avatar on one page, which would make these pages load even slower than a little 64x64 image with a lot less colors than what's available on a human avatar :/</blockquote><br />
<br />
After you've viewed the image once, unless you're on an archaic browser, it gets cached <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" /> (The background image)
0

Tricksparrow

Some warning would have been nice. I lost my custom commissioned avatar. Done by an artist that will probably never ever do them again, payed for with real money. As for loading faster, they do not load at all for me, it slows down the time pages take to load in general.

Hmm, I guess my question was answered now that I Ctrl + F5'd... The people without HAs at all don't have anything <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_sad.gif" border="0" /> I feel bad for them, especially since for a very long time I was one of those people. <br />
<br />
(I was also around before HAs came around, so I guess that helped my reluctancy). <br />
<br />
I did finally make one when the raven items were released in the accessory bin, but that's another story. <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_sad.gif" border="0" />
0

Tropicandy

I suppose for those that miss their avvie, they could code a section and paste it in the box as an image. Aside from your lookup it only showed up on comments right? <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/smiley_xface.gif" border="0" />
0

ToastedReason

I am not going to whine and complain at all, just state my opinion..<br />
Well what I think of this is that it IS a successful change I must admit, it's just that...it's less..unique for each individual person now. Less different, less exciting and entertaining. I do like the idea of hosting an image somewhere else, but of course it's all up to Keith pretty much. <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" /><br />
But yeah..I would prefer not to have this change, but it is nice not having as much or any lag. <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_happy.gif" border="0" />
0

MidnightShadow

Thanks Keith. If this isn't necessarily permanent then I'll just shut up and wait it out. I really really hope you can figure a way around this though. n
0

Rosethorn

Wait, so... WHY can't we host them offsite? o__o Wouldn't that be okay?
0

Squirt

I can see why a graphic maker would be upset to lose business, though. But there’s other graphics around the site to make, too.<br />
<br />
Maybe there could be some way to have an off-site host for avatars, but I don't honestly see why everyone's so up in arms. : Sure it was more personalized, but it's not that big a deal. If you commissioned someone for your avatar, put it on your profile. That's the only place they were displayed other than news anyway.
0

JoAnna_119

Since you dont host the youtube vids and it doesn't lag is there a possibility of implementing the same thing with avies?
0

User not found:

Yeeeah. I don't think things that affect the site's overall performance and server load should need to be polled. TBH, I didn't know why the avatars existed in the first place. You could always host it yourself and put it on your profile or forumset somewhere. It's just not going to show up in newsposts.
0

Coretta

"Also, we don't host the youtube video's, so they don't lag the servers in the least bit."<br />
<br />
<br />
Why not offer the option to provide a link to the image, hosted offsite then? Like tinypic or photobucket or something? <br />
<br />
Don't get me wrong Keith. I love Subeta, you and the staff have done amazing things with it. This just really bugs me. I don't want a bunch of heads floating around. D=

Bah, this sucks. I despise the HAs and never use them. I actually have the HAs adblocked so I don't have to look at the damn things. I much preferred my 64x64 avvie.
0

Delicacy

Dang it. I paid a pretty penny for my avatar. I don't think I even had it saved to my pc yet. Thanks.. alot.. *ish very upset* I don't like this change. Again, I ask.. why the ____ fix something if it isn't broke to begin with??? And especially.. why were we not polled on this??? *sigh* <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_sad.gif" border="0" />
0

MidnightShadow

Correct me if I'm wrong; but these avatars are really loading in the background. THE FULL AVATAR.<br />
It only shows the head though. And you know the more items you wear on your HA, the larger the file size. So if I'm right about this, then we're loading everyone's full avatar on one page, which would make these pages load even slower than a little 64x64 image with a lot less colors than what's available on a human avatar :/
0

Keith

Again, if this were an <strong>option</strong>, i'd have polled it, or I'd have removed it now due to a lot of people not liking it.<br />
<br />
However, it's not really a question of how much you dislike it, but how much you want Subeta to stay online.<br />
<br />
I'll look into the possibility of using your pet, or an offsite hosted avatar in the future, but for now - this just isn't possible.
0

Ginger

I just hard refreshed my profile and can now see the headshots - of course my HA is wearing a clown/mime theme and looks like a total goober *lol* I like the idea of having the option to be able to host an avatar off-site if we wanted, that would be great.
0

Lindsey

:/ I don't like this.<br />
My HA doesn't define me. My avatar got me recognized by more people and attracted more people with similar interests then my HA ever could.<br />
<br />
I agree that we should have an option or it should have been fairly polled :/
0

Nemanga

It's kind of a hideous solution. Shall we eat cake with this disembodied feature? I'd nearly prefer just removing the UA entirely if it's hassling things.
0

D= I lost my...avvie...That was my only copy of it. I'm going to have to ask Vela if she still has it. Dang. I admit, the site is running faster now, I suppose...

humm I'm not sure I like this idea, maybe a Poll should of been added to get the players votes, since Subeta is used via players<img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" /> So what happens to those pplayer's (not me) that don't like HA's and use an 64x64 avvie only?? guess they don't have a choice anymore. I also will miss seeing my friend's chosen avvie shown on my profile, as I know which avvie belongs to which friend<img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" /> All my friend's change their HA all the time so it's going to be hard to identify my friend's without having to look harder at my friends list to find the friend I want to click on and go to there profile. I do wonder if it make the site any faster though. I also feel Subeta is concentrating on HA's more than other 'important' changes/things that were promised.

Let me explain this, in a technical way. As best as I can - to answer the questions that have been posted up to this point.<br />
<br />
The avatars were located in one folder, that was over 13GB in size when it was just removed. That means that each time an avatar was displayed on the site (the 64x64 one) it had to search that directory for the right image (which caused crashing in NFS) as well as query the user database, for information on which avatar was the users.<br />

<br />
That means that we're saving 13GB worth of file searching, and a database query to the most important table in the database, for <strong>each avatar load</strong>.
0

Wingsrising

I also really preferred the old avatars. There was more variety to them than in a bunch of faces and it made it easier to tell who was who.<br />
<br />
If hosting is a problem I also like the idea of requiring the avatars to be hosted off-site.
0

I like the idea of hosting them on another site (though I guess this might be a problem if they contain unacceptable content) or, honestly, getting rid of them altogether. I don't HATE the HAs, but so much of the site focuses on them already. |: I just get tired of seeing them after a while. [quote-quidditch_ginny]a list of names on a profile takes up less space than the avies. I like the change. It dosen't really bother me. Having my own site and server, I totally understand the bandwidth issues.<br />
<br />
Ctrl F5 on your profile, the HA heads show there as well :/

should have made a poll at least

Oh dear, that's a sad. <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_sad.gif" border="0" /> But I'll deal with it.<br />
I suppose one could find a place to put a 64x64 image on their profile if they were really upset by this idea. I know I liked making little piccies for my avvies, but I understand the need to remove them.<br />
*gulp* Hope I put something nice on my HA, I can't remember what it is. 0.o lolz...
0

yawn

... ;o; i miss my avatar. i spent so much time on the animation for each and every one of them.<br />
<br />
couldn't there have been a poll to get the users' consent? or maybe an option to view the 64x64 avatars instead of the headshots?
0

User not found:

Dang o___o Can't make avatars no more.<br />
<br />
I can see the prices of Signatures go up now. And, I liked having a free, pretty avatar, instead of paying millions just to get a wig. <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/smiley_sadface.gif" border="0" />
0

Awww, I really loved my avatar. =( I like my HA, but my friend made that icon for me, and I don't have any other place to use it...
0

Milkyushigirl

I know some people have spent a pretty SP on custom avatars for the site and If I say just have it like it used to be only GA members can have custom avatars. This is to much like Gaia lately and it's starting to hurt.
0

SeoRa

Hmm I knew something was up when i found my avatar missing. it's not such a radical or bad change, but the site hasn't been faster for me.
0

Katts

pros and cons but overall I like the change =)
0

User not found:

Working, that is.
0

yak

Why is this a rule now?<br />
It's... not right. It's not all that individual anymore. I liked it the old way where we could make avatars for ourselves and they would have our names.<br />
<br />
This is... I don't like it. D':
0

User not found:

All the complaining.. Oh well. It's not so bad, I had never found an avie I really like anyways!
0

User not found:

I have to agree, the site's going even <i>slower</i> for me now than before. I really don't think the 100x100 avatar heads are doing it.
0

User not found:

Aww... I liked my avvie!
0

Orchipea

There's so much lag for me right now that I couldn't tell if it was faster or not. I am not a fan of the change, it makes it harder for me to find my friends in my friends list, not to mention the avatar makers and the people that just paid for them. And most of us were really attached to those icons.
0

Coretta

My 2 cents -<br />
<br />
I. Do not like this.<br />
What about those of us who aren't really into HAs?<br />
<br />
I mean... isn't Subeta a PET site? Not an HA site? I supposed I'm biased in that, as I haven't really been big on the HA idea since they originally came out... but come on. Why is everything in Subeta orbitting around HAs lately? Makes me sad. XC<br />
<br />
I agree with Saga - Isn't there a way you can still offer 64 x 64 avatars to people who want them? Take them back to being a perk of GAsor something. I like the option of a 64 x 64 avatar. I actually knew who people were at a glance without having to scour the page for their username link.<br />
<br />
Bring them back Keith? *puppy eyes*

You honestly think that's the one thing that affects everyone that isn't polled? He didn't poll the shop changes, the autopricer changes, the shop search changes etc. Pretty sure that affects everyone unless you never search for items, quest or use your shop in any way.
0

Meagan_Madness

Ive noticed the site DOES move faster since they changed it to this <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" /><br />
<br />
and for those who make avvie's they still can people can just have them put else where. It wont ruin commission at all.
0

User not found:

And yes the site is doing the usual lag & freezing up that it's been doing, for me, every night when I try to do dailies & quests. Can't see how the avatars in posts would make a difference in the other areas.
0

Psyciandra

well that's no fun... I never liked the idea of HA's when they came out... because I thought they were gonna replace the UA's... when they didn't, I was happy. Now I'm just severely disappointed =/ It's not the first change with subeta I've been saddened over either... I hope this won't be a repeat of neopets.
0

Sekhmet

The site seems to be just as slow, if not slower. Perhaps Subeta needs to get a new server, or hire more programmers. Instead of taking away a feature that 90% of users are upset about.
0

LadyTerentia

I like the idea Saga posted about uploading out 64x64's offsite, so that we are responsible for hosting them somewhere else, that way they don't take up as much space on subeta servers.<br />
They are a lot more distinctive and recognizable, as many people, myself included, change their HA's fairly often.
0

Psyciandra

I don't see the site moving faster, honestly it's lagging even more than before. It seems kind of plain now on the comments though, since it's just Human Avatars like the forums only in a more condensed space. :l

Nostalgia_507

Well, what is better? having an avvie and making the site slower or not having it and making it go faster? We need to sacrifice little things in order to enjoy the bigger things...
0

tegu

I love the idea, but I miss my avatar =( .
0

Frostpebble

Not sure if it's related, but the site is actually moving considerably slower for me at the moment.
0

User not found:

Sorry, but I don't like it either. I liked & wanted my previous avatar, it was a picture of my "little girl". Please bring them back? I don't really care if the forums & news posts go slower or not.
0

Edward

It isnt the same. People use to make a living off of making avatars, now what? ._. I liked being unique with my avatars, and now its just HA, HA, HA. They change hourly, if not minutely, and you'll now just have to go by their names. No more cute little avatars on your friends list, now its just a bunch of staring heads.<br />
<br />
Yes I know, fragmented complaints.<br />
<br />
I still dont notice any speed increasement. =/
0

Meagan_Madness

I love it... You can put the avvie somewhere else on the site or a other site.<br />
Im happy that it makes the site faster. I was actually never fond of the avvies
0

foudre

The headshot of my HA looks fat :/
0

MidnightShadow

I'd like to add that I find if funny that the one thing EVERYONE is affected by is the one thing that isn't polled.<br />
0

Squirt

Maybe like Saga said, have the option to use an avatar hosted off the site. <br />
<br />
And I remember when that switch happened- there used to only be preset avatars. Maybe have a few of those too? It wouldn't kill the bandwidth nearly as much. <br />
<br />
Or not, whichever works best. <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_wink.gif" border="0" />
0

Charmander

WHAT?! No. Give me my avatar back. Seeing everyone's HAs sucks.

0

MarchOnOff

But one of the biggest perks on subeta was the making of a personalized avatars...And what happens to all the people who commissioned? As in either already payed for them or worked on them to be delivered, time and effort and imagination...all gone? And no sp in return? Maybe there could be a way around this? And leave the avatars alone how they were?

I miss my avvie. I normally don't complain with the changes but these look STUPID.
0

MidnightShadow

I HATE this. I don't like human avatars so much that I want to see their faces any place someone can make a post. <br />
And I especially don't want it showing up on my profile by my user info.

This suckss. Like everyone else said our Avatars helped us tell who's who. Because everyone changes their HA. -.-<br />
<br />
MAJOR FAIL. <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/smiley_xface.gif" border="0" /><br />
<br />
NOTE: Either way the site never moves any faster. Always the same. no matter how many "changes" you're "making" ugh.
0

Onyx_635

Really don't like this idea. My avvie is important to me :_;
0

Luckykitten

I for one am extremely disappointed. I don't often put my 5 cents in but i actually payed quite a bit for my av, and the artist who made it for me put alot of work into drawing and animating it for me. I think this should've at least been put a poll since there is a poll for just about everything else it seems. Why not this ? And give everyone a choice.
0

AsteriskNova

Awwww.

0

*sniff* I will really miss the 'ole 64x64...the little head shots are cute, and at least it's less load for the servers.
0

0

Squirt

You can always post your avatars elsewhere, like on your profile. Of course, it won't appear in the news, but... xD;
0

Keith

Well, the custom avatars were originally just a gold account feature, that we opened up to everyone, to be nice <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_sad.gif" border="0" /><br />
<br />
I'm sorry that we had to remove it, but it was replace them with the HA, or remove them altogether.
0

Cass

Can we have the option to display a custom 64x64 icon that we upload from an offsite host, at least? It wouldn't be putting as much strain on the site, and people would still be able to have them.
0

User not found:

I am on the fence, but the thing that was nice about the avies and using them was the fact that we all could be our own people in the fact that avies are VERY independant and they could have a message to whom we are for the most part. I had Wonder Woman as my avatar because a huge portion of who I am is loving comic books. NOW you don't get that.
0

User not found:

I really like this idea!<img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
0

JoAnna_119

I have no problem with this as my avie wasn't important to me. I know lots of people that it was. Thing is you'll just have to get over it. He never /had/ to let us do custom avies, it could be like neo with pre set avies for the site. Be happy and let him better the site or gtfo.

0

Any chance we'll have an option of disabling the headshots from appearing?
0

Frostpebble

I noticed this a while ago and didn't like it, and I like it less now, seeing a bunch of people in one place. I used to be able to recognize people by their avatars, now I have to look at their names. It takes away the feel of personalization for those who weren't fond of the HAs.
0

Fern_450

I forgot to include this but, could we have an option of having either the HA or a normal avatar?
0

Squirt

I liked them too- but yes, having that much info saved to the database would not only slow things down, but also take up bandwidth.

<br />
XD I actually like this idea. It's even better if it makes the site run faster.
0

User not found:

I'm going to miss the smaller avatars. They were another way to personalize your account and were more constant in appearance than the HAs are. I like a faster site though. <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_raspberry.gif" border="0" /> Hm, mixed feelings.
0

LadyTerentia

That's disappointing. <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_sad.gif" border="0" /> I really liked my 64x64 avatar. If people want to see my HA, they could just hover over my name in news posts, or check out my profile. The custom avatar was more unique, and definitely will be missed. I understand about needing to make the sight faster, but couldn't the money subeta is making through things like the cash shop be put to use that way, instead of taking away a feature that users love?
0

Squirt

Also it seems the site is loading slower right now to me. :/ But that could be something else.
0

Kyrre

I'm glad I scrapped my idea of create a new avatar just last week. If I had put a couple hours into it and found out I wouldn't even be able to use it, I'd be upset. I hope the other avatar artists aren't too upset by this change.

I like the thought, though I liked my avatar.. ; w ; Still, I guess we're supposed to like our HAs just as much. What about the people without HAs though, out of curiosity?
0

Squirt

I'd think it would be slower to load headshots than 64x64 cons if the headshots change every time someone hanges their avatar, but having a database of literally thousands of 64x64 icons would slow things down too. <img src="http://images.subeta.org/smilies/6398_emoticon_raspberry.gif" border="0" />

As well, they change so frequently they are no use for identifying people. I don't notice any change in the speed of the site though.<br />
