Hi all! For those of you who don't know me, I'm Alex, Subeta programmer. This news post is kind of a big announcement, but it's also a long one, so bear with me. I promise, it's worth it.
It's always amazed me that Subeta's problems with crashes and downtime have become something of a running joke on the site, but I can see why they have. Back when this year started, we were suffering from database crashes every couple of days, sometimes going down for an hour or two before we were able to recover, sometimes much longer. And we had a couple times where we had no choice but to roll the site back for hours (or days) when backups didn't work or corruption was too bad.
Keith and I have been hard at work fixing this situation though. And things have gotten much better. The database now stays up for days without crashes or killer lag, and when we do crash it takes us, on average, less than 45 minutes to get back online with no rollbacks.
But still our core problem remains: both of our database servers somehow have their data corrupted, overwritten with nonsense, which eventually causes us to crash and have to restore from another copy. This has been a vexing problem for us, and it was one of my main focuses when I attended the MySQL User's Conference back in April. And I'm happy to say we now have a very solid theory of what's happening. The details are pretty technical, but the general theory is that the Solid State Disks (SSDs) that our database servers use, and the RAID cards they are connected to, are somehow corrupting the database. This is actually more likely than it sounds, because the disks our hosting company uses in our servers, we've discovered, are a cheaper brand of SSDs meant for things like storing your music on, not running high-concurrency, high-churn databases on.
So we're moving... to a different hosting company, one that has put together a much better setup for us. Our servers will have more memory, faster disks, no RAID cards (which end up slowing the SSDs down), and better support for when things go wrong. The new setup is currently being inspected by the new company, after which WE get to inspect it (likely tomorrow) and then we'll move the site. Even if it doesn't fix the corruption issue (which we are almost positive it will), this move represents a pretty nice improvement for us.
So, what should you expect? Downtime should be contained. I'm actually hoping to only have the site offline for a few minutes, but it may take longer than that. When copying gigabytes of data across the internet, you never really know how much time you'll need. The site will NOT be changing names again, we'll still be subeta.net.
With any luck, when Subeta comes up it will hopefully be much more stable and (crosses fingers) noticably faster.
We (the entire staff) also wanted to thank everyone, both for their patience during the next few days as we execute the move, but also for being patient with us over the past months as we've worked hard to hunt down problems and get to this point. You guys are the reason why I don't mind waking up to my phone at 3 in the morning to go recover the database :)

P.S. Keith and I will be lurking in the comments, answering any questions you may have.

I haven't been around much lately, but I wanted to say that I respect how forthcoming Subeta and staff about the hows and whys of site problems. Even if we won't understand (I certainly don't), knowing that you're on the job and keeping us informed is good for everyone, so thanks. And it's always nice when the admins post good news too. Good luck!
I wanted to add my thanks in here as well. I actually was debating on leaving Subeta (mostly to the errors and glitches)... but then my little sister begged me not to. This, coupled with the fact you folks do actually care and take the time to explain your plans to your members. Best of all you actually follow through with those plans... I've yet to see another site like this do the same. This most of all made me reconsider my thought of leaving. I've quit 2 other sites I used to play on because of the lack of caring and all those empty promises.
Thank you for everything you do here, and for taking the time to tell us, your members! I now plan to stay a good long while!

Okay I have one question
The item scrollover dissapeared
I'e seen this as a reocuring question
do you think if you move that it might come up again?
because It made quest sooooo much easier <3

Again, a HUGE thank you all for the time and effort that you guys put into the running of our 'home'.

Hey guys! Once again our heartfelt thanks for taking the time to keep us in the 'know' and especially for all your hard work. You might not hear it often enough but the majority of us serious subeta'ers truly appreciate it!!! Hope everything works out fabulously!! crosses fingers
Good luck you guys! I hope you don't have to wake up at three A.M.
Is the move finished and a done deal? I am still having major lag even after expunging all personal data, cache, etc. What if you make all wiz quest tokens earned 15 to help us quest during the lag?
you!
you!
I am still new to Subeta and I had wondered why such a big site has all these crashes and stuff. Thanks for keeping us informed. It makes me glad to see that the staff is concerned and is trying to do what they can to fix the problem. Sounds like a good solution so far, and maybe now you'll be able to start focusing on where any corruptions that are left, if any, are at.

Oh man, this news post makes me so delighted! We're finally switching to a new hoster? That sounds good. Completely dump everything corrupted and just go somewhere nice and clean.
Oh, comment lurkers, eh? I presume nothing on Subeta will change except for the good, which is totally winsome! Aww man, this makes me happy! Thanks for all your hard work, Alx. Man, Subeta would be nothing without you! (And Keith, haha.)

When you do move over will you be clearing the frozen accounts to make the copy over faster? My sisters currently frozen because of a breach in her account and I really hope she still has a chance to get it back.
Thanks fo rall the hard work you guys put in... you have no idea how much this means to me (and I am sure a lot of other users). Subeta is my place of escape and relaxation and all improvements are massively ppreciated! - Keep up the massive massive work you are doing!

Thanks for all the hard work and continuation of dedication that everyone puts in for making this the best pet site ever!!
I guess the main question is: will it be .ws or .net? I currently play on .ws...is this the right site? What about the transfer---will those playing on .ws and/or .net lose any items when/if the site is changed?
Thanks again!!!

Thanks for all the information about the site - it was great appreciated, even if I did not understand all of it, but I got the general gist of events. Will we be having prior notice of when the site will change from www.subeta.net to www.subeta.net? I do hope so.

I just wanted to say THANKS! I only been here a few months. I find that this website is update and fixed faster than two other websites that i play and have been playing them for years now. I spend most of my time on the internet here! Thanks for all you two do to make it fun for me to use subeta. Kudos to both of you.
Hey! thanks for the update and working hard for it to run!

Thanks for all the hard work you have put into making Subeta work. Kudos to you Alex for all your 3AM calls and hard work. Kudos to Keith for not giving up on us!!!
That is great news and many thanks for the update. I sincerely hopes this resolves a lot of the problems. I really enjoy playing here since my friend intorduced me to the site some odd months ago.
Thanks for y'all's hard work!
I one question, though...
I use .ws on my home computer and .net at school (they blocked .ws with that filter thing). Which one should I use?

Alex, you should know that your dedication is appreciated. You and Keith seem to make a good team Frustration is at a much lower level knowing that if the site is down... hey, they're on it, I'm sure.

Getting up at 3 in the morning? That's dedication for you. Thank you Alex, and all the staff, for all the work you do on the site.
I can´t understand all that technical things you were say but I understand you are working for us! That is why I would say you thanks for all your work! I love this site and as long I won´t miss my things or pets I would be happy unimportant what happens.

If the move keeps all those errors, blank pages and terrible lags away from me then I move happily with you to the dark side of the moon ~ thanks for the support and work and for keeping us informed.

Oh that sounds AWESOME! Great day for Subeta when we get to move up to better hosting! On the off chance it doesn't fix the problems, we're certainly have more stability and faster speeds, so it's worth it either way.
Best of luck copying data over! Here's to fixing a corrupt db, once and for all!

thank you, btw and great job with the site I have missed the squirrel though.

if we are subeta.net, then why is it that when i go to view my cults page it tells me to log in all the time? Shouldn't the two sites be disconnected (.ws and .net?) it is rather annoying that they are interchangeable -- except for the cult pages.
I hope this problem can be fixed soon.
