I wonder if it would have been less awkward if the tail direction was flipped. Maybe if the HA was sitting on the rock (tail coming left and ending on the right) instead of leaning/coming up to it Little Mermaid style. The art is gorgeous and wonderful, so I agree the awkwardness comes more so from the flat HA base than the tail themselves!
@ForbiddenSecrets I really like your edit! The side sit makes it look more comfortable.

I accept the explanation of going for a more sleek, eel-like tail, and I don't think that the art entirely fails on that front. I think it's the rigidity of the base that makes it look so awkward. The torso just kind of goes from being this pillar-like monolith of flesh into this really flexible and elegant form. The transition just does not work. The art is beautiful, so I'm giving the goblets a very sad pass.

I was torn on the goblets, but after careful study I'm giving them a pass. The art is just too awkward and doesn't work for me.

These goblets are gorgeous, though I agree with others about the positioning/thickness of the tails.
But honestly, I blame the awkwardness more on the HA base itself. The art quality is soooo nice, that next to the drab shading and thick lineart of the HA base, the hair is just bound to not look at nice. HA Base revamp, please? Please?

Goblets are pretty, but the dimensions are way off. With the torso/head so big and the tail so thin, either that tail has the strongest, thinnest muscle... or your HA should be flopped over on itself, unable to support its excessively top-heavy body.

I got one of the goblets! They're lovely, even if I agree it's not immediately apparent how thick the tail is.

The art is lovely, but there is something wrong with how it wraps around the rock, even as an eel mermaid, assuming the rock isn't half an inch thick. This was my attempt to understand the body curve (butchered, I know) but it just doesn't seem to work with the rock formation.

UGH those goblets are TOO GOOD! I was a little thrown at first by the pose but after bean's explanation I can totally see it and it's great :D

I understand the idea behind the pose, but I feel like the execution is way off. The tail bit we see is far too thin, it makes it look like the HA is cutoff at the waist. It just screams awkward to me. Which is a shame, because I was excited until I saw how weirdly it sits on the HA =/ I guess more money saved for me.

I thought the tail in Nautilus Goblets were attached to both sides to of the hips, it's very pretty though. I like the Jade one the best.
I've had the Gilded Sea Witch Top on my wishlist for awhile now but I'm not paying 250 CSC for it :P

I do think one issue is that people might be used to seeing mermaids depicted a certain way, with what are essentially fused human legs covered in scales with a fish tail attached where feet would be. I was going for a more snake/eel-like skeleton with more flexibility in mind, mostly because I wanted something a bit more sleeker and different from the other great tails we have.
But i suppose it's a bit like telling jokes. If you've got to explain, maybe you should have told it better!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a problem with the overlays for those goblets. The art itself is gorgeous at first glance, but then I thought the tail doesn't seem to fit the avatar body. It doesn't look to me at all like it's curled around the rock. I only see a little bit being covered by a bit of rock at the top. The rest is just bent in an impossible way. We shouldn't be able to see that much of what looks like the back of the tail, even if it is curled around the rock. It looks like the spine is made of rubber or something, unless it's a contortionist mermaid. I don't think fish tails can normally curl around that much. If it really is supposed to be like that Little Mermaid pose, the tail should be almost entirely behind the rock. Regardless of the pose, comparing the lower part of the tail to the avatar base, it is STILL too small for the avatar.
Also on the ebony goblet, the tail and rock are too similar in color, and almost blend together. I had a hard time distinguishing them at first.

I understand the whole hidden part behind the rock but it still looks much too placed to the right. Unless she has hips like whoa and an extremely bendable tail that lets her all of a sudden cut it quickly to the right. I also kind of wish the rocks for the Ebony would have been lighter so the tail stood out more against it. Love the color choices for the Jade though.
Glad to see the chance bag became a pick item bag. I've wanted that gilded top for years.

To me, it looks like the merperson is more like "sliding" of the rock than anything but I still like them.

/SCREEECHES those tails are wonderful and I have bought all three. I really love the little side-fin detail.

I really don't like the wearable. The goblet item icon image itself is lovely. But the wearable, it's too weird even for me?
Even with bean's explanation I still can't see what's going on, it really doesn't look like she says it's supposed to to me. It looks like someone with great shading skill but poor anatomy did something childlike to me. Also, after staring at it for a long time trying to figure out what's going on, the shading itself is wrong around the tailfin itself, because the tailfin looks too bright to be behind the HAs right hand. And then if it's behind the hand then it needs to show more curvature to show that the tail is going more than 360 degrees both in how it's drawn and how it's shaded and also needs shading to explain why it's not partially behind the back of the HA because that's a strained double-twist. Given how the rock increases in diameter the tail is also extreeemely long compared to most mermaid tails.
Bleah.

The rest of the body is a bit obscured by the rock, because it's climbed to the top of it and is kind of curled around it.

Merana hair, finally!
It took me a bit longer to figure out the goblets. At first I thought the rock was a skirt, and the tail was stuck on the avatar's but somehow... :P

Do I need to spend real money on tails I'll probably never wear just because they're tails? Yes, probably.

I think if the tail were brought down a bit and the top extended/made larger, it would fix the anatomy issue. But even still, they're stunning. And the color for the ebony one is amaaaazing.

the art is pretty, but the anatomy on the goblets looks?? really strange?? the avatar portion looks very large and the tail looks very tiny and as if the tail is from the side. :(

@Ferinsy - I've seen drawing and stuff depicting Sirens that way... but I've never considered Sirens and Mermaids as the same magical beings. I've also read about Melusine, but don't consider Melusine the same as mermaid...

@LuridNebulosity OMG I googled it and double tailed mermaid is really a thing, it's even in some antique buildings O___o

It's like the tail has little arms. I do think it's a pretty item though. I love the ebony one.

@Ferinsy - Yeah, I couldn't figure out what the 2 tail looking things on the side were when I first saw the logo. At first I thought it was just some weird rococo/baroque columns with a lady peering between them. But then when I actually went to read about the company and logo history, they basically said flat out she is a mermaid... At that point, I was dumbfound at discovering Starbuck's logo has a split tail mermaid, however since it seems the public was very accepting of her having split tail I kind of just shut up about my misgiving on "that's not how a mermaid supposed to look like."

The art is really pretty on the goblets, but the body placement is a little off. I look at it and can't help thinking the persona's body is attached to the rock, and it just happens to also have a tail, rather than it being a merperson. If there were scales at the waist, just to separate the rock and torso, and the tail was shifted a bit so it looked more like the tail was an extension of the torso rather than looking like it was attached to one hip, it would have been perfect.

The shading and the art in general look gorgeous, but the placing is so odd.. it's like the tail it's coming out from the hip of the avatar .__.

For tier 6 battlers, the Frozen Ocean Curl is pretty good; solid chance to freeze, between twenty and thirty icons (water and ice), two mod slots, lots of water and ice defense. And buying it from this bag is cheaper than shop search.

The art quality of the goblets, both the items and the wearables, is absolutely phenomenal.

The goblets put the HA in this kind of pose (link in case the image breaks)
The tail should maybe come from around behind the HA a little more, it looks like maybe the HA isn't at enough of an angle for the way the tail is facing but it doesn't really bother me overall I still like them ^_^

Okay it's hard to explain but the area where the tail and body connects in the goblets....it just doesn't look right.......to me......

@LuridNebulosity lol always thought Starbuck's logo was a woman with her legs up or with some really strange gloves
1
LuridNebulosity
@Ferinsy - I kind of just think of it as Starbuck-style Mermaid (with split tails... since Starbuck logo was supposed to be a "mermaid" so to speak...)...

Is it just me or the body placement of the mermaid tail in the HA is kinda strange? it's too placed to the right, kinda looks like a leg...
