To be honest i only made any reference to the mcdonalds character cuz the item reminded me of it, i didnt know it had THAT kinnd of connotation nowadays, i apologize if i caused any offence.

Thank you for the feedback on the item name, everyone. The original item was a compete fluke and not an homage to that disgusting meme. While we understand what people are saying regarding the man in the moon not belonging to anyone, the specific phrase has associations that we were not aware of, and would like to avoid. I changed the name and UAs have removed any comments that might be seen as inappropriate in relation to the name.

Kitties cure every situation. They're just too cute.

@Valiska
No I completely understand that. We've always been fortunate in the cats that pick us are generally healthy for the majority of their life. We've primarily had strays come and adopt us (we joke that we have a "suckers live here" sign), but we've adopted two from a local adoption agency (my tortoiseshell who was from a hoarders situation and the one-eyed cat (who we think might be a Savannah but we don't care if he is or not, we love him)). Renal failure is just very common in domestic cats I'm finding. My mom's cat had either gallbladder or liver issues, and even after surgery, the vet said we'd be lucky if she made it to 7-8. She lived to 19. She was a tough little cat. Same with the cat from my childhood whom we put down back in March this year. She was dumber than a bag of rocks, was in renal failure and had a bad back, but she lived to 17 til we had to let her go. We just couldn't bear to see her be uncomfortable more and more by the day.

But I would never trade a single moment or even any emergency vet visits for anything else in this world. They came into our lives for whatever reasons, and not just anyone else could have taken care of them. We open our hearts to them, so they come.
Sounds like your kitties lived comfortably and happily despite the cards dealt to them at birth. I'm sure your next kitty will find you soon.

I absolutely love that it went from unnecessary drama to wholesome cat chat in the comments. :3

@METROID No one-eyed cats so far, although that would be a way to give a cat that might get passed over a good home without setting myself up for a bunch more bills--though, let's face it, it's gonna depend on who picks me, like always. I'm just gonna ask whatever rescue or shelter to have pity on me because I want people who don't work for Care Credit to call me! But the cat who had renal failure was a lynx point Siamese who also had severe nystagmus and couldn't see in the dark. So while your cat is half blind, my cat was blind half the time. :) (I miss him, but it's getting to be a good hurt now, so ... time for another cat.)

But at the same time that I adopted Speak the half blind Meezer who was apparently born with congenital kidney disease, I also adopted a black cat (they were a bonded pair, but Asterix) who was diabetic. I cured his diabetes by changing his diet from kibble to a good wet meaty food and he was doing fine, then up and had a heart attack a couple years before I lost the Meezer. I reckon I could have bought a car for what I spent on vet bills between 2014-2017--a nice one. Or paid off my student loans.

But no regrets. Still...I think it's my turn to have an "easy" cat. All cats become special-needs as they get older. I just want one that doesn't START that way this time. You know. Give me 5-6 years to save some money for when the cat is actually old. Also, a young cat can be fed on good food from the very beginning, meaning I won't have to cure diabetes again. Hopefully. G-d willing and the creek don't rise.

@Valiska
The song Moon River came to my mind first upon seeing this item. Love that song, it's very relaxing. That, or the phrase the "man in the moon".

Have you ever owned a one-eyed cat? I thought ours would need a lot of special help, but he does great all on his own. The only thing he struggles with is depth perception at times, mostly when he wants to jump off from somewhere.

@thercery And yet, there are many people in these comments who were unaware of any connection between the idea of a "Moon Man" and Nazis until you brought it up.

I had to google it and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Despite the theft being older than the theft of Pepe, more people are aware of the Pepe connection than the Moon Man connection. The first thing I thought of when I saw it was the REM song, then seeing Lady Foxling's post immediately reminded me of the Rick & Morty song "Goodbye Moonmen".

I feel therefore that this particular character association is more brittle (rather than malleable) and we ought to take the opportunity to break it when we get the chance to break it.

@Abel - thanks! I'm getting there. =^^= I've had a lot of special-needs cats, and this time I want one that's young and healthy. I need a break from worrying, grief and $2000 vet bills. Let my next cat/s get actually old before I have to start worrying, knock wood.

Man, you know what could have been great? Instead of making the comments of a news post about a cute and sweet item all about you and white supremacy, you go to their profile and comment politely, then they can meme better next time. Since this wasn't done, I can only assume deliberate drama is being attempted. I will never willingly give ANYTHING up to those with evil in their hearts, and I won't encourage censorship of something that has been a part of the culture of the english speaking world for centuries, if not directly a part of american music culture over the past 60 years. If you want every thing that MIGHT be used offensively by people none of us know to go away, go play Flight Rising.

Delphi

The items name is Moon Man because it is a moon with a face. End of story, there are no hidden reasons. And as others have said, the item is also extremely old. To change the name of the item would be giving those people who use the phrase "Moon Man" in a bad way some of the power they are seeking. DO NOT CHANGE.

METROID

@thercery
I've never heard of this Moon Man being used for neo-nazism. It doesn't seem to be on the same level of well-known symbol abuse like the swastika. And obviously this item is old as snot, and likely staff never knew about this either. If you don't follow these groups (neo-nazis), yeah you're not gonna realize it. So what are you suggesting then? The name of the item be changed just because some jackoffs stained the name or character of something from a fast food chain ad of the 80s that the average person probably isn't aware of, especially when compared to the swastika? Why bring this up?

Swear to god, this reminds me of when there was that ebola outbreak a few years ago and someone complained about the bowl of ebola item being "offensive", when the item has been on the site forever in a day and had nothing to do with outbreaks of the disease irl. Or the fetus pops. Can we just stop with trying to censor shit or trying to find controversy that isn't there?

I should clarify if only because @Valiska makes perfect points. I'm not referring to the "Man in the Moon" in general as the problem, but the specific phrase "Moon Man" and the Mac Tonight image (which I totally understand was not done by the Subeta team, and probably wasn't even done to make a negative statement by a user, but it was sure a bad coincidence).

If this wasn't something that had been firmly seized by the groups mentioned over ten years ago, sure, I'd be all for flouting their attempts and ignoring any claims they stake. But this was ten years ago and has been used consistently by these groups since. It's not as recent and malleable as the use of Pepe.
I have seen the association between the image/phrase and hateful, ignorant bullying affirmed all too often to just ignore it or try and use something that's now firmly a problem.

@Valiska i'm sorry about the passing of your cat, it's always hard.. i hope at some point you are able to be healed enough mentally to have another little kitten in your life, i've been in the same boat as you.
1

Valiska

NB: I have had cats in the past, also. I just don't have one right at this moment because it has taken me a while to get over the loss of my cat who passed in 2017 from renal failure.

Also, @Abel --the tribute items when people pass are usually free gifts.

I'm Jewish and queer and want nothing to do with the alt-right white supremacist jerks that are doing this, but unlike the swastika, these symbols were not actually used by the Nazis during WWII--they were stolen by a bunch of ridiculous lowlives who didn't create them within the last 10-15 years, and the people who did create the characters are pretty ticked off about it.

This is just like what happened with Pepe the Frog. Some jackrods on 4chan and YTMND decide to steal someone else's character (Pepe belonged to Matt Furie in his "Boy's Club" comics, Mac Tonight belongs to McDonalds) and decide to repurpose this character that they do not own and have no right to use for their alt-right Nazi BS. Plus, "the man in the moon" has been around since I was a kid--long before the Mac Tonight commercials, which came out when I was in college. My parents used to point the face of the man in the moon out to me when I was little. There are songs about the man in the moon. Some of them are older than me.

Do we really need to give a bunch of creeps the ability to claim any piece of popular culture they want by smearing their grabby hands all over it?

When I have cats (which I don't currently, but am planning to get one soon), and a chunk of meat I'm preparing falls off the counter onto the floor, the cat can have it.

When a cat tries to steal the meat that I am actually eating off my plate, the cat won't get to keep it, because I'm not training the cat that grabbing other people's food means he or she gets to eat that food.

I'm not attached to Pepe the Frog (though I feel sorry for Matt Furie and hope he succeeds in getting his character back) but the man in the moon does not belong to these alt-right asshats.

thercery You guys didn't know that "Moon Man" is associated with white-supremicism, neo-nazisim, and contemporary, dangerous forms of white nationalism?
I understand that you can't help what your users post (in reference to @curbdirt and their Mac Tonight gif, directly under a comment referring to "Moon Man") and you wouldn't delete it without any sort of proactive, pre-existing knowledge of the problem.
Nonetheless, this could also indicate that you know about these implications of the phrase and the image and either tacitly endorse them, or don't care, and that's terrible.
@Amber
Can you do something about this? Surely this goes against the community guidelines, or else y'all got double standards on what is allowable and what isn't. Seriously, I don't want to see this unnecessary SJW BS.

Well, I had no idea about that association that was mentioned a couple comments down. But how about we just stop letting awful people appropriate things that aren't theirs? I'm not giving them the Moon.

Cosmos without hatred
Stars like diamonds in your eyes
