Astur Callaway had been in the bar tending business for quite a while now, though maybe you wouldn't know it to look at him. He had been running the Fifth Corner long enough to know that things never stayed the same for very long before being washed away by something new and exciting. He did wish, sometimes, that time might slow down just a little bit, give him a chance to really take in the new fads and trends and cultures before they were all but gone completely. Nevertheless, he was always equally curious to see what came next. He had seen plenty of styles change, plenty of politics shift, and plenty of people and ideas come and go. It was always interesting, and, every now and then, it was even unexpected.
But beyond the simple pleasure of watching history happen from day to day, Astur's real and only love was the bar.
The Fifth Corner had its regulars -- those that had been rather lost and forgotten in the flow of time, and whose names and faces tended to change when it suited them, or simply when the right time came. These people he greeted warmly whenever he saw them (which was often), asked them how their lives were going if they felt like talking. He was invested in the well-being of each of them, as much as he could be, and he offered them comfort and advice when they would take it. Mostly he just offered them drinks. That was fine.
Then the bar had it's one- and two-time visitors, the ones who wandered in off the street, usually looking a bit lost or a bit confused. These people Astur greeted warmly as well, told them what he had on tap and whatever modest menu of cooked dishes he felt like making that night. He poured them drinks, listened to their problems, spoke up when he felt he could. They were usually much more receptive to his advice than his regulars, and he rarely saw them again once they went on their way. He was happy just to have put them on the right path again.
A lot of people, on visiting the Fifth Corner (even just once or twice) would say that Astur Callaway was truly an angel. Most of them never realized quite how close they were coming to the truth.
