All that is gold does not glitter,Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither,Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken,A light from the shadows shall spring;Renewed shall be blade that was broken,The crownless again shall be king. ? J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring---------------------------------------------------There were some things that were, and some things that were not.The things that were were the aspects that she knew to be constant in her life: the whispers of her ancestors, whose song of fire burned within her veins; the soul and mind of her partner, the young lord known as Demetrius Waldgrave; and the stories and tales yet unsung, kindled by the deep, thrumming heart of the world. The things that were not were much more difficult to ascribe, though anything that was not constant, was dimly aware to her, though not focused upon. Merely turning a blind eye to these as the world around her seemed to fly by with the years, they were her mother, the blue queen, her curling smoke evident atop her kingdom in the East; her father, the green king, the Lord of Elves and the ruler of the forest-that-stretched-far-and-wide; and the-man-who-would-be-King, her mother's life partner. This man, called "Eragon Kingslayer", was little more than a curious legend to her, a mystery wrapped inside an enigma, shrouded in fog. What she did know, however, was that in the egg, the first touch she ever felt were those of his warm, large palms. Even moments from her "birth", she could feel his thoughts from within her egg-shell...his plans for her, to have her hatch for one of his Order. She, however, had different plans. For months she had been sealed away in a cave, guarded by Cuaroc, the Guardian, along with her other two siblings. Then, on one particularly warm, humid night, she had sensed a new power when a new pair of hands held her egg. Pulsing an ancient, different kind of power, these hands were slender and nimble...and the touch sent a jolt through her shell. This being who held her now had something of her Kind within her, and her magic, waking and electrifying, sang to her like her ancestors' whispers. Then, it had begun.--------------------------------------For more to the story, read Niernen's profile.- Excerpt above is from my post-Inheritance Cycle fan fiction, The Rider's Apprentice, circa 2012.
Name: ArundelName Meaning: "swallow" (bird), "dell of the flowing river"Age: Near-Immortal (young)Species: DragonColor: 'Diamond' WhiteGender: FemaleHomeland: Alaga siaRider: Demetrius WaldgraveAppearance: Born with 'diamond' white, opalescent scales, Arundel is a smaller, though flexible and slender, dragon with scales that are also diamond-shaped, along with a lighter, creamy color along her bottom neck and underbelly. The top of her wings are also a bright, clear, shimmering white, while her under wings are a matching cream color to her underbelly and under-neck.Like all other dragons of Alaga sia, Arundel's scales are more akin to lightweight steel, allowing him to fly while protecting her entire body, including her belly, from penetration or injury from most non-magical human weapons. Magical and elven weapons, however, can still pierce Arundel's scales, making her more cautious and wary when dealing with an opponent with those weapons.Atop her head, Arundel has two curved, ivory-colored horns, followed by a line of ivory spikes along her forehead, neck, and spine; Arundel's wing talons, claw talons, and teeth are also a white, ivory color, and are razor sharp, up kept by the dragon via nail care by her Rider, Demetri. Overall, Arundel's body is about average, though being smaller, she is less hefty and certainly much smaller than other females, including her mother, Saphira.Unlike her mate, Niernen, Arundel possesses light blue eyes akin to clear water or a mountain spring, with a clarity that matches her sense of mind.Personality: Overall, Arundel's personality reflects her color: she has a very pure heart, and an overall sense of innocence and naivety that comes with never having actually fought in a war or combated actual enemy dragons. A very intelligent dragon, she reads as often as she can get books, taking a particular interest in magic, spells, and the Ancient Language, as well as archaic dragon culture.Believing herself to be a distant descendant of the white dragon who once helped end the Du Fyrn Skulblaka, or 'the Dragon War', with the elves, Arundel wishes to be a dimplat and ambassador for the Western Order of Dragon Riders. For a hobby, Arundel likes practicing aerial tactics, and also engages in botany, using simple spells or developing new ones to help with her task of regrowing back Vroengard Island's destroyed vegetation. She also oversees crop planting, planning, and field rotation for farming, and she enjoys the quiet life that comes with being an islander.History: It all began with that fateful trip to Belatona.Of course, there had been much fanfare with the return of the Violet Rider - the one that the people of the Broddring Kingdom now called many different names in hushed tones. Yet all knew well who she was from an equally public event, years prior - the human "witch" child, touched with dragon magic, who had caused much dissent when a dragon chose her. Yet she was spared by her use of her dragon magic to protect the Queen, Nasuada - and the Queen owed her life several times over to the uncanny child. Thus, Elva Farseer, or so she was called for her ability to divine the future, had been taken from her homeland of Alaga sia and the Broddring Kingdom for several years. Though her "choosing" had gone down in history to be sure, and was recorded by the historian Jeod, the people of Alaga sia seemed to forget the Violet Rider...until the day she returned. One day, unexpectedly, the gigantic mass of amethyst scales was seen over Ilirea, the capital of the Broddring Kingdom, and all instantly recognized the shape: it was the dragonet so revered before, now grown to a large adult. While not as big as the "founding three" - Saphira, Thorn, and F rnen - the dragon, aptly named Niernen, or "orchid", was large enough to rouse the city's crowds. It was on that day that the Violet Rider, Elva, met with her Queen, and confessed that she had done the unthinkable. Rebelling against the New Order or Dragon Riders, she had stolen three dragon eggs to form her own Order, including one of the first eggs of Saphira and F rnen.Though distressed, Queen Nasuada, owing many lives to the witch-child, agreed to a truce; and likewise, the Queen's consort, King Orrin of Surda, agreed, with the stipulation that one of the eggs be sent to Surda to hatch to a Surdan rider. Thus, the Great Dischord was formed - and for the first time in history, two orders of Dragon Riders existed at the same time.Had Elva decided at a later time, she would have been subdued. However, the Eastern Order, as it came to be called, had faced extreme unuckiness at the failure of a dragon egg to hatch for one of their own - aside from Elva, of course. The Great Rider, Eragon Kingslayer, sought to remain in the East with his dragon, Saphira, to build the new colony of Riders and the Eastern Order. He refused to abandon his burgeoning colony, especially after the recent civil war resulting in Nasuada's victory and crowning, and his colleague; Queen Arya of the elves and her dragon, F rnen, stayed to rebuild their home, the eleven nation. Thus, the Violet Rider established the Western Order on the isle of Vroengard, the ancient home of the Old Order of the Riders, and began to rebuild Doru Araeba, the ruins of their once-great capital. The natives there came to worship Elva as a goddess, and Elva coined the name "Queen of Vroengard", with her dragon, Niernen, at her side.Without haste, Elva began to search or her own pupils, new Riders she could train to begin her own Order.Beginning a tour of Alaga sia, Elva finally arrived at the city of Belatona.Years before, in the war between the old tyrant, Galbatorix, and the Varden, led by Nasuada, Belatona had been the site of an immense battle, won for the Varden by none other than Eragon Kingslayer, the Blue Rider. Yet the battle had not been without cost...Eragon's dragon, Saphira, was nearly killed in the battle by one of the sons of Lady Lorana, Demetri, who used an enchanted spear to deal a near-fatal wound to the blue dragoness. The spear Demetri had wielded, Niernen, became the namesake of Elva's own violet dragon.Upon entering Belatona, Elva soon met Lord Bradburn, as well as the infamous man himself, Demetri Waldgrave. After a vision of seeing one of the eggs hatch for Demetri, Elva presented the three to the young man, instructing him to touch all three. The first two gave no response...but the last, the stolen white egg of Saphira and F rnen, hatched for the eldest heir of the Waldgrave family. As she had been whisked away by Arya, the Green Rider, so Elva in turn took away Demetri Waldgrave and his new dragon to the isle of Vroengard, and the reconstruction of Doru Araeba. In time, the white dragon, a female, selected the name 'Arundel' among those Demetri presented to her.Since then, Arundel has not only been the closest companion and confidant to Demetri, but also his protector and partner, learning alongside him as they learned what Elva had learned from Arya and Eragon before her. In time, Arundel matured and mated to Elva's male dragon, Niernen, while Demetri soon engaged in a romance with Elva, his teacher. Though Arundel is still young, she is only a few years younger than Niernen, and she is expecting their first clutch of eggs soon.
