Laguna,

is a sorry little thing.

A lithe periwinkle butterfly flitted from flower to flower. Landing first upon a crimson rose and then upon an amber bell-flower, the butterfly seemed oblivious to all around it. It had no other purpose in life than to enjoy the beauty of a fine summer day in Peka Glade. A fine day it was indeed. Crystalline water flowed gently down the glade's slopes, stopping here and there to gather in small pools, where the sun's reflection could be seen. A light breeze brought the fragrance of a dozen various flowers wafting by.

Laguna sat on the edge of a small stream, her tail resting in the cool water of the glade. Her eyes wandered, taking in the colors of the flora around her, and she breathed deep, thinking that if only the flowers' scent could be captured as it was now, it would make an exquisite perfume. Another scent, acid and unwanted, rose to her nose then; it smelled of rotten eggs and overgrown swamps and she knew it came from her. She flushed in embarrassment, though no others were around, and turned her face to stare at her own offending feet and tail. A dark, murky substance oozed from her limbs and Laguna hastily snatched up her tail when she realized the secretion had polluted the glade's clear water.

She tried to force the thought from her mind, though she never truly forgot the fact. It permeated every aspect of her life: she could go nowhere without raising eyebrows and more than a few noses and could never stop apologizing for the trail of slime she left behind. But today she had come out, not to focus on her physical peculiarity, but to find a comfortable spot to work on her scrapbook. Laguna pulled out the album, flipping open to an unfinished page. In addition, she pulled out various photographs, stickers, adhesives, and other embellishments, including her own favorite purple glitter.

Laguna rummaged through the pictures and smiled at the memories they brought. A particular snapshot of her and a snow fairy during the Luminaire festivities brought an extra large grin. As she continued sorting the pictures however, the smile fell from her face as she was painfully reminded that in all her pictures, she was alone, save for Origami, her hummingbird. She had few friends and her secretion often meant that she was excluded from many social events.

The isolation had begun when she was young. She could still remember the other kid's taunts and their mocking rhymes.

Dirty Laguna,
she smells like tuna.
Rotten eggs and
frog legs,
that's what Laguna's like.

When they weren't teasing her about the smell, or the ooze, they were asking her what she was. Her purple fur and orange spots didn't remind anyone of a species they knew, so they constantly vexed her so that she would admit to what she was. Still, even through all the taunts, she never told a soul and even today none knew what she was.

Laguna shook her head and sighed. The day was getting late already and the sun sank in the west. She got up, packed her things, and headed out of the glade, a dark muddy ooze following her every step.
