♅ TENOH HARUKA ♅

"Guided by a new era, Sailor Uranus acts with elegance!"

.

Tenoh Haruka (天王 はるか) is an elegant, dashing, androgynous young woman with a charismatic air. Fascinated with speed, she is a rising star as a racecar driver, an accomplished track star, and a talented pianist. For all her fame and appeal, though, Haruka is surprisingly standoffish and even cold; her charming, flirtatious manner with young women is paired with an intensely private, often unhappy personality. Because Haruka has a surprising secret . . .

Haruka is Sailor Uranus, the soldier of wind and sky. Reluctant at first, Haruka is warned that becoming a Senshi is a transformation she can never undo -- by none other than Michiru Kaioh, a graceful, artistic girl who is fighting alone as Sailor Neptune. Struck by Neptune's courage, Haruka accepts her destiny, transforming. She and Sailor Neptune begin searching for the Talismans, powerful artifacts hidden in the pure heart crystals of three unknown people, to prevent the apocalyptic Silence. But removing the Talismans will kill the bearers, and so Uranus and Neptune grimly accept their duty, willingly taking on the murder of innocents to protect the whole world. Haruka is tortured by what she must do, but remains convinced that a sacrifice must be made to save the world -- even when her own heart is revealed to contain a Talisman.

Proud, daring, and determined to protect the world and her princess no matter what the cost, Haruka is a powerful and brave character, whether she acts as herself or as Uranus. Her aloof, cold persona hides a deeply idealistic, loyal nature, a dedicated soldier fighting for a cause. Alongside her partner Neptune, Sailor Uranus is a strong and elegant warrior fighting with the other Senshi to protect love and justice!

♅ WHAT'S IN A NAME ♅

Haruka's name sounds like 遥か, haruka, which means "distant" or "far-off". Her surname, Tenoh, is written with the kanji for "sky" and "king", and is the same as the Japanese word for the Greek god Uranus/Ouranos.

Haruka is a gender-neutral name.

Haruka's names throughout various international dubs include Amara (English); Frédérique (French); Heles (Italian); Timmy (from the feminine name Timotéa) (Castilian); 天王遙, Tinwong Yiu (Cantonese); 테리, Teri (Korean); and 람이, Rami (Korean manga translation).

Early proposed names for Haruka in the English adaptation include Corinn and Alex.

♅ BITS AND PIECES ♅

Haruka's birthday is January 27th, making her an Aquarius. In astrology, the sign Aquarius is ruled by Uranus.

She loves running and, especially, driving. She drives a Ferrari F512M in the manga, and a 1968 Toyota 2000GT open-top in the anime.

Her favorite food is salad; her least favorite food is natto.

Haruka often presents herself as a man -- she wears a boy's uniform and doesn't necessarily correct people who think she's male. She does occasionally wears more feminine clothing in the manga. In the manga, Michiru states that Haruka combines masculine and feminine attributes, which can be interpreted as Haruka being non-binary.

She has an obsession with speed, which manifests itself in her career as a racer. In the past she felt as though she was trying to escape from something, but later came to realize that she was in fact running toward her destiny as a Senshi alongside Neptune.

In both the manga and the anime, Haruka forms a family for herself along with Michiru, Setsuna, and Hotaru. Hotaru calls her Haruka-papa.

Haruka's character design was inspired by the otokoyaku (women who play male roles) of the Takarazuka Revue, an all-female theater troupe. Naoko Takeuchi has said that she intended Haruka to represent "the maximum level of female emancipation" embodied by these actresses, able to take on masculine and feminine roles/behaviors alike.

Haruka has a tendency to dislike popular, attractive men; she doesn't seem to care for Mamoru, and openly dislikes Seiya.

♅ URANUS AND NEPTUNE ♅

Haruka is in a romantic relationship with Kaioh Michiru/Sailor Neptune, making them the only Senshi apart from Usagi who have a canon relationship.

Many international dubs toned down Haruka and Michiru's relationship, or rewrote it altogether to be platonic. In the English dub, Amara and Michelle were rewritten as cousins; while in the French dub, Frédérique and Mylène deliberately posed as boyfriend and girlfriend in an act to protect their identities. In Italy, they were treated as close friends who thought of each other as sisters.

Haruka met Michiru some time before their identities as Senshi were revealed; each of them seems to have had some premonition of the other. Recognizing Michiru as the girl she had seen in a dream or vision, Haruka rejects Michiru's request to sketch her. After this they actually have a rather acrimonious start to their relationship, treating each other coldly until Michiru reveals her true feelings after protecting Haruka during a battle.

♅ PRETTY SOLDIER ♅

Sailor Uranus is the soldier of wind and flight; the Greek god Uranus (or Ouranos) was a primal god of the sky.

In the S season, Uranus and Neptune keep themselves apart from the other Senshi. The reason they give for this is that Sailor Moon and her friends are too idealistic and naïve to do what is necessary to prevent the Silence. However, as removing the Talismans from pure hearts will kill the bearers, they also don't want anyone else to bear the burden of being responsible for murder. Later, although they no longer consider the other Senshi weak, they remain a somewhat separate team along with Sailor Pluto and Sailor Saturn.

One of the three Talismans, the Space Sword, belongs to Sailor Uranus and was hidden in her heart crystal.

Uranus' dominant color is navy blue and her uniform colors are navy blue and yellow.

Like Sailor Neptune, her gloves go only to her wrists, rather than to her elbows as the other Senshis' do.

In the manga, Sailor Uranus has a cape and mask at her first appearance, making her look somewhat like Tuxedo Mask -- evidently to emphasize her androgyny.

In the anime, Sailor Uranus receives a powerup into Super Sailor Uranus from Hotaru. In the manga, she later achieves Eternal form as well.

In the manga, each of the planetary Senshi is the princess of her own planet and has her own castle, given to her by Queen Serenity. These castles are named after the respective planets' moons. Uranus' castle is named Castle Miranda.

S SEASON/INFINITY ARC

Uranus Lip Rod: This materialized when Haruka accepted her identity as Sailor Uranus. It allows her to transform with the phrase "Uranus Planet Power, Makeup!"

World Shaking: An attack in which Uranus summons a huge, planet-shaped sphere of energy and slams it down, causing the ground to split. The energy then travels at high speed toward her target. (NB that in astrology, the planet Uranus is associated with earthquakes.)

Space Sword: A curved sword in a jeweled sheath. (The sheath is often mistaken for the sword itself; the blade of the sword, when drawn, seems to be made of pure light, inconsistently shown as white, gold, or red.) It was one of the three mysterious Talismans that Uranus and Neptune, as well as the Death Busters, were searching for; in the end, it proved to be sealed inside of Haruka's pure heart crystal. She can use it as a weapon in its own right, or as part of a magical attack.
In the manga, Uranus already had possession of the Space Sword when she first appeared; its purpose, along with the other Talismans, was not to summon the Holy Grail but rather to summon Sailor Saturn.

SUPERS SEASON/DREAM ARC

Uranus Crystal: Haruka's sailor crystal. It is a heart-shaped stone revealed to her by Hotaru. She uses it to transform into Super Sailor Uranus with the phrase "Uranus Crystal Power, Makeup!" The Uranus Crystal appears only in the manga.

Guardian Uranus: A Sailor Power Guardian, Guardian Uranus appears as a small sprite who looks like a tiny version of Sailor Uranus, and refers to herself as Haruka's "other self". She resides in Castle Miranda. Guardian Uranus appears only in the manga.

Space Sword Blaster: An attack in which Uranus uses the Space Sword to create crescent-shaped waves of energy that would fly at her target. ( Alternate version 1/ Alternate version 2)

SAILOR STARS SEASON/STARS ARC

Space Turbulence: A manga-only attack in which Uranus generates a large amount of energy that then attacks its target in several beams. When Uranus is controlled by Galaxia, she performs a variant called Galactica Space Turbulence.

Star Seed: Star seeds are crystals that are the embodiment of each person's life. In the anime, Haruka's star seed is a blue crystal with a glowing yellow core; in the manga, it is the Uranus Crystal.
It is a true star seed (anime) or sailor crystal (manga), the star seed of a planet(/star/asteroid/etc). Being born with a true star seed/sailor crystal enables a person to transform into the Senshi or guardian of that planet.

"I just wanted to be like the wind... wrestling free from gravity and soaring into the endless sky."
