Brash, competitive, and single-minded, Kalena lives only for herself and training her Pokémon. Her sharp tongue, combined with a quick temper and unapologetic nature, has left her with few friends, but she can't say that it bothers her; Kalena likes to think that she is too busy chasing her dream of becoming a Pokémon League Champion to have time for friendship. Besides, her rivalry with Jarret keeps her entertained enough as it is; he can never seem to quite reach her level, but not even his impressive amount of losses can keep him from trying.

Although a competent trainer, Kalena isn't especially close to her Pokémon. While she would never harm any of them, she has a history of paying little attention to their personalities and quirks, and tends to treat them more as a means to an end than the intelligent creatures they are. She makes sure that their physical needs are always met, but has often been too focused on her goals to truly bond with them outside of battle. As a result, her Pokémon are generally more attached to one another than to her.

Recently, however, Kalena has begun to realize that she may have been dismissive of her Pokémon's importance. After impulsively trading away the Monferno that had been her first Pokémon, Kalena has found herself missing the Fire-type often, wondering what has become of her and if the two will ever meet again. She isn't very good at admitting that she may have been wrong (and is, in fact, quite stubbornly trying to convince herself that the trade was worth it and that she has never been an inattentive trainer), but she is slowly working to learn to appreciate her Pokémon for more than how they do in battle.

Kalena grew up in Saffron City, Kanto, and moved to rural Sinnoh with her parents when she was nine, a full year before she was to start her Pokémon journey. She immediately disliked the region, a feeling that has hardly changed, but with no way of returning to Kanto on her own before she became old enough to leave home, she was forced to begin her Pokémon training career in Sinnoh's cold rather than Kanto's more moderate climate. She hopes to leave the region but first desperately wants to become the new Champion; while it was becoming Kanto's Champion that she dreamed of as a little girl, she thinks that becoming Champion of Sinnoh would be as close as she can come to conquering the snowy land that put her farther from her dream.

She is still far from reaching the Elite Four, let alone challenging them, but has earned a handful of Gym Badges and plenty of experience in the six years that she has been a trainer. She still loathes the seemingly perpetual cold of Sinnoh, although she has become slightly more tolerant of the snow since getting herself a Pokémon large enough to ride through the snow in.

Jarret is Kalena's rival, though she doesn't consider him much of one. Kalena has always been a better trainer than Jarret, her aggressive battle style consistently defeating his more cautious and casual tendencies as a trainer; although they've battled a number of times, Jarret has yet to pull off an actual win against her (though he has come close, as much as Kalena pretends that he hasn't.)

Many of Kalena's worst traits come out in her relationship with Jarret; she is condescending and rude to him, treating him as little more than a source of amusement. A part of Kalena knows that her behavior is wrong and that of a bully, but she enjoys the feeling of superiority that she gets from defeating Jarret, and taunting him just seems natural. Sometimes she feels a little guilty about the toxic nature of their rivalry, but she is still too self-centered to change her ways at this point.

Chili
Species Charmander
Pokédex Number #004
Type Fire
Gender male
Nature Lonely
Chili is the Pokémon that Kalena traded away her starter for; Charizard is Kalena's favorite Pokémon and she jumped at the chance to get its unevolved form. She dreams of evolving Chili and tries to make training him a priority, but their relationship is strained by the trade. The two aren't quite sure what to make of one another and their interactions outside of battle tend to be awkward.

Chili seems to miss his old trainer quite often. While he is overall obedient and respects Kalena's abilities as a trainer, he holds himself apart from her, preferring the company of the other Pokémon.

Boulder
Species Mamoswine
Pokédex Number #473
Type Ice/Ground
Gender male
Nature Brave
Boulder was originally captured as a Swinub for the purpose of being evolved and used as a transport Pokémon so that Kalena wouldn't have to walk through Sinnoh's snow herself any longer. Always fearless and willing to battle, the rigorous training that Boulder went through led him to become one of the powerful Pokémon on Kalena's team.

Boulder's stubbornness seemed to increase with his strength, which frustrates Kalena to no end; while not quite rebellious, he is one of the least obedient Pokémon she owns, and is always willing to use his massive size to his advantage if he doesn't feel like obeying his trainer at the moment. He can be a bit of a hassle as a ride Pokémon, sometimes being more interested in doing his own thing than carrying Kalena to where she'd like him to go. She considers it a little bit embarrassing and is determined to bring him under control.

Gabby
Species Gible
Pokédex Number #443
Type Ground/Dragon
Gender female
Nature Naughty
As the youngest, Gabby is considered the baby of Kalena's Pokémon team, and it more than shows in her personality. She is a curious, impulsive little dragon with a tendency to bite off more than she can chew -- often literally, as her very favorite hobby is biting anything she can get her jaws on.

Gabby isn't quite the obedient powerhouse Kalena had hoped to capture after days spent searching for a Gible, but she shows some potential as a battler; she is, however, also quite clumsy, and frequently hurts herself as well as her opponent. Due to this, Gabby is often reluctant to actually battle, and she much prefers getting into mischief over following her trainer's plans for her.

Bandit
Species Salandit
Pokédex Number #757
Type Poison/Fire
Gender male
Nature Bold
The result of another trade, Kalena didn't find out that male Salandit are unable to evolve for quite a while. Initially she wanted to retrade him for something "better," but she changed her mind for two reasons: their time together, and not wanting to have wasted that time (she feels a little guilty admitting the latter to herself, these days.)

Bandit is surprisingly competent in battle and seems to enjoy them. Fearless and unusually robust for his species to begin with, he also has impressive response time and works well in tandem with Kalena and her other Pokémon.

River
Species Floatzel
Pokédex Number #419
Type Water
Gender female
Nature Lax
Though she has a strong preference toward lazing about and eating poffins, River is a force to be reckoned with in battle. She almost undergoes a personality shift, going from an unimpressive slacker to a hard-hitting speedster.

However, she has an intense fear of electricity that causes her to go from simply weak against Electric-types to nearly unusable against them. It developed from her being bullied repeatedly by Kalena's Electabuzz, Surge, while she was still a Buizel. Kalena hasn't had much luck with curing River's fear so far, but is at least aware of it and feels guilty for not stopping Surge from bullying her other Pokémon sooner.

Surge
Species Electabuzz
Pokédex Number #125
Type Electric
Gender male
Nature Adamant
Surge is fierce, powerful, and nearly as cocky as his trainer. His battle style is wild and full of showboating; in addition to being reckless, he tends to make his attacks flashier than necessary in order to both intimidate and show off. He doesn't get along with Kalena's other Pokémon and likes to bully those he considers weaker than himself, especially River.

In some ways, Kalena and Surge are too alike for their own good; when they get along well, they're the perfect pair of trainer and Pokémon, but their strong personalities clash at times. Now that she's started to realize the negative effects of letting one of her own Pokémon pick on the others, Kalena has begun making an effort to rein Surge in. (She hasn't had much luck yet, but she's sure that she'll eventually manage to out-stubborn him.)

Nora
Species Rattata
Pokédex Number #018
Type Normal
Gender female
Nature Sassy
Nora is small, weak, and full of attitude. She loves to backtalk her trainer; Kalena often wishes she could understand Nora to find out if she really is as sassy as she sounds. For all her saucy personality, though, Nora is quite obedient and always works hard to please her trainer.

Unfortunately, Kalena doesn't often rotate Nora into the party, so she hasn't had as much of a chance to train and grow as the others. She tries to make the most of what time she does spend in battle but, for all that she's determined to grow stronger, she just doesn't seem to be cut out for fighting.

Roxanne
Species Onix
Pokédex Number #095
Type Rock/Ground
Gender female
Nature Mild
Although Roxanne is one of the most mellow and laidback of Kalena's Pokémon, her massive size and sturdy defense make her formidable in battle. She isn't as strong as she looks, but makes up for it with her endurance and surprisingly decent speed.

As one of Kalena's first captures and oldest team members, she likes to act as a mentor to the younger Pokémon. She isn't particularly sociable with most other Pokémon, but has a major soft spot for the little ones.

Bones
Species Houndoom
Pokédex Number #229
Type Dark/Fire
Gender female
Nature Hardy
With her iron will and natural capability for battle, Bones proved quite difficult to capture as a Houndour; even as a robust but inexperienced wild Pokémon, she gave every fight her all. She has since been vital to a number of narrow wins for Kalena and is one of the Pokémon that Kalena is proudest of.

Outside of battle, Bones tends to act as a guard dog of sorts and is watchful and protective. While Houndoom have a bit of a reputation due to their intimidating appearance and painful flames, Bones seems happy to save all of her aggression for battle, and treats her trainer as pack leader and the other Pokémon as fellow pack members.

Robin
Species Fletchling
Pokédex Number #661
Type Normal/Flying
Gender male
Nature Jolly
Robin was obtained in a global trade and is still relatively new to the team, as well as quite young. He would rather sing and fly about than battle, and he often fails to pay attention to training, becoming easily distracted by loud sounds or interesting sights.

His perpetually chipper, energetic demeanor has endeared him to Kalena despite the struggles of raising him. She's discovered that he's fond of trying to race with Hunter to see who the better flier is; while not exactly a real battle, this is proving to be an excellent way to get Robin to practice his Quick Attack, and Kalena is hoping she can work her way up to getting him through some real training.

Spike
Species Rhyhorn
Pokédex Number #111
Type Rock/Ground
Gender male
Nature Gentle
Quite large for a Rhyhorn, Spike was another difficult capture and shows great promise in battle. Stoic and unflappable yet kind at heart, he's always looking out for the weaker Pokémon and sharing his food with them. Gabby is especially fond of him, perhaps due to his endless patience for her antics and the fact that he makes for an excellent mount (when you're a tiny, tough-skinned Gible, that is.)

Despite being something of a gentle giant, Spike is fiercely competitive in battle, gaining a single-minded determination that puts Kalena's to shame. He absolutely hates to lose.

Rebel
Species Scraggy
Pokédex Number #559
Type Dark/Fighting
Gender female
Nature Rash
Rebel is yet another Pokémon that Kalena obtained in a trade, this one with a trainer from Unova. Impulsive and headstrong, Rebel's personality is as big as her thick-skulled head. She doesn't hesitate to headbutt others if they rub her the wrong way and would never dream of backing down from a challenge.

While technically one of the younger Pokémon on the team, Rebel acts much more like a teenage delinquent. Kalena is frequently amused by her strong personality, which she has just enough self-awareness to admit has some similarities to her own.

Fang
Species Poochyena
Pokédex Number #261
Type Dark
Gender male
Nature Timid
Cowardly Fang is much more likely to turn tail and run than participate in battle, making him one of the least frequently used of Kalena's Pokémon. She had hoped that he would prove to be a little braver than he seemed out in the wild, but his personality was just as timid as it first appeared.

For all his cowardice, though, he seems to become a little braver when around Bones; he tends to puff himself up around her and act a bit less nervous than usual. Due to this, Fang is rarely rotated into the party unless Bones is also present.

Hunter
Species Gligar
Pokédex Number #207
Type Ground/Flying
Gender male
Nature Naive
Hunter is surprisingly friendly for a poisonous, predatory Pokémon like Gligar. He's playful and a bit of a goofball, even in battle; while a force to be reckoned with when he gets serious, he's just as likely to mess around with his opponent as he is to give a battle his all, depending on his mood.

Hunter has an addiction to sweet berries that he shares with Robin, and has become good friends with the little Fletchling, as unusual of a friendship as it might seem. The two often race and play together.
