curse
The westerly wind raged unabated against the small shack's thin window panes. Occupants within began to stir... casting the light of a small candle onto the porch step. A kitten with eyes black as night and eerily marbled fur gazed upward in the glow. The small parchment tucked into his swaddling cloth upturned one word only, one single word written in a script that would send chills down the spines of most. "OZZI"
Britt gasped from the cold, toweling her face dry before beaming at the basket on her kitchen counter. "Ozzi, I'm so glad I heard you over this storm!"
The tiny kitten purred contently, suddenly averting his eyes to the living room.
"Britt, it's not like you to be up so late, what in the--". Ender, the elderly caretaker, normally as talkative as he was cantankerous, suddenly found himself with shaken discourse after locking eyes with the kitten's pitch-black eyes and reading the demonic script upon his single piece of parchment. "B-B-Br-itt, m-my dear ch-child..." he mouthed in rasped horror.
"Ender, what in heavens is the matter with you?
The old caretaker regained his speech and spoke venomously, "Get that cursed death-beast from our home and cast the little demon far from here! Now!
The kitten's eyes blinked lovingly at Britt as her arms wrapped around him. "We are not casting a defenseless kit out into this storm!"
"That beast in your arms is the unholy offspring of Reaper's necromancers!" Ender sputtered with fear and rage at the demon-eyed intruder, "That 'tiny kitten' is a dark and evil entity that will kill us both before it can speak!"
Ender and Britt's continued bickering brought tears to Ozzi's eyes.
"Shh, shhhh, little one it'll be alright." Britt cooed softly, slowly rocking the crying kitten to and fro.
Ender continued in hushed whispers, "My child, that demon is asleep and very young, but tomorrow we take it far from here when the rains are gone."
Britt glared at Ender, continuing to rock the kitten and walk softly up the stairs. She shot the caretaker one more look from the top, "People in town call you a suspicious old fool. After tonight, I'm starting to believe them."
Ender scoffed in disbelief and betrayal. She must learn the truth of that beast before we are both killed. He shuffled angrily to his study, reciting fragments of prophecies and ancient lore under his breath.
