Life Excerpt

He let out a heavy sigh of frustration. There was a lot of stuff that needed to be done and the fact that Rex wasn't here to help didn't help matters in any way. Jack shook his head. That had surprised him, why had he even considered blaming Rex right now? It wasn't like Rex had blown it off for no good reason. The fact of the matter was that his younger brother had had these bouts and periods of depression for several years now. They'd all tried to help him at one time or another. Hell, Jack himself had saved Rex from the brink of suicide so many times he'd lost count.
So, no this wasn't Rex's fault at all. But he had to admit that it was a lot easier when his brother was around. He was the leader of their gang, the Sky-Walkers, and it was quite obvious that people liked Rex a lot more than they liked Jack. Not that he really cared. He preferred simply being respected, or even feared, rather than liked. This wasn't about being popular. This was about survival. But since they'd settled down in this village it seemed like for every day that went by less and less people shared Jack's opinion on the fact that they should still focus on survival. More and more people were getting complacent, and Jack didn't like it. As he surveyed the people in the infirmary he couldn't help but feel that if they had been more alert there would have been less people in here right now. Or at least fewer people with severe injuries. He sighed again.

-"I have to bring these concerns up with Rex when I see him next." He said more to himself than to anyone else. Then he chuckled mirthlessly to himself. "Yeah, talk about how best to survive with the guy who refuses to learn that you should never throw your knife." Not once since he'd started training Rex with a knife several years ago had his younger brother chosen to follow the most important rule Jack had been trying to teach him. That your knife is your life, if you lose it you're dead. Rex still insisted on throwing said knife at his enemies, leaving himself unarmed which wasn't a good thing if you were surrounded by enemies.
Jack pinched the bridge of his nose. He wasn't a big fan of change and lately his brother had done just that. He'd changed. It had come as a chock to everyone when Rex had revealed that he was in a relationship. With another man. His brother, who'd always been straight, was all of a sudden bisexual. Not that Jack had a problem with that. He didn't consider himself a bigot, never had. He'd never had such stupid thoughts about anyone. Who people fell for, or were attracted to was their business. Man and woman, man and man, woman and woman. It didn't matter to him. As long as a person could find happiness it shouldn't matter. Such trivial things as sexuality or anything like that was pointless things to get stuck on. After all, they didn't define the person. A person was defined by their personality, values and actions. That's how he'd been raised. He smiled to himself. He missed his mother immensely. She'd been a wonderful woman, and an amazing mother. Just the fact that she'd agreed to taking in and adopting Rex after Jack found him crying in an alley said a lot about her as a person. He could feel the tears that wanted to escape his eyes. After a quick look around the room and a few orders to the people helping the wounded, he hurried out of there. It wasn't until he was at home that he let go, and let the tears flow freely.

Motto

Your knife is your life. Loose it and you're dead.
