When Steele was a young man, his father died. He was running a race, set to be his last, when he was caught in a terrible blizzard. He didn't survive, and only one of the dogs, Togo, managed to return home. Shortly after, Steele's mother passed away, the only thing the doctor could attribute it to was depression at the loss of her husband. Losing both his parents in such a short time left Steele feeling hollow and angry. He became reserved and standoffish, not wanting to get close to anyone. He trained even harder with his dogs, and his reputation became even more skewed.
