You don't have to be so lonely anymore.
It was a busy day at the farmer's market, and it was especially busy for an old farmer called Ernest. All his life he had been spent every waking moment growing and selling fruits and vegetables for great, friendly citizens to eat. He never used pesticides and handled each item with care. He wanted to make sure that his customers will eat something healthy and delicious, which is the main reason that most people love to buy from him.
Ernest lives in a small house and a huge garden where he grows the vegetables and fruits that he sells. His favorite time of the day is the afternoon, where he would spend hours resting on his rocking chair after a fine day's work. Then he would would wave the dying sun good night, and go to sleep where he would then be greeted by his dreams.
But Ernest is getting old. His sight is getting poorer, and his wrist pains are making it hard for him to hold and wash the items. He also lives alone and so he tends to his garden all by himself, which can be extremely exhausting. He is getting weaker each day, and he can no longer deliver the fruits to the market as fast as he used to. His neighbors are kind enough to help him carry boxes of fruits and vegetables to the market, but he could not help but feel bad for bothering them and wasting their time by helping him.
One day, A close friend of Ernest has stopped by. He is a farmer named James, and he brought with him boxes of lychees, pears and peaches to share and celebrate with his friend one of his greatest harvests of the year. The two spent all day talking and catching up that it was almost sundown when the two had said their goodbyes.
"Look at the time! I will make sure to visit again," James smiled as he started his truck.
"James," Ernest nodded and smiled. "I haven't been feeling well lately. I just want you to know that when the time comes, this garden is--"
"Say no more," James interrupted. "You are strong and tough, and you still will be for a very long time! I am always here to help whenever you need me, my friend."
The two then waved each other goodbye and good luck for later harvests. He still could not stop thinking of what he had told his friend. He knew that someday it will happen, and he was worried of what will happen to his precious garden when he leaves. He took one last look at his garden before he retires for the night. It reminded him of so many things, so many memories of the people he loved. The garden is all that he has left in this world.
Everyone else was waiting for him.
Ernest looked at the sunset and smiled weakly as he tried not to let his sadness consume him. He sighed and pulled up his sleeves so the he could carry the boxes inside the house.
To his surprise, there was a little kitten sleeping at the box of lychees! Ernest did not know what to do at first, but then he carefully carried the kitten and set it aside to get the boxes, hoping that it would wander away once it wakes up... But as soon as Ernest finished bringing the boxes in and closed the door, it started raining. Feeling bad for the kitten, the farmer took the helpless creature inside the house and fixed a small bowl of milk for it.
The next morning, Ernest could not find the kitten inside the house. He had searched everywhere but there was no sign of the creature. He did not expect the kitten to stay, but the fact that he was all alone again left a soft pang in his chest. He soon gave up searching, but as he opened his door he found the kitten making itself comfortable in his rocking chair. When the kitten saw him it jumped from the chair and ran to him, rubbing her head against his shoe. The farmer chuckled and knelt down, patting the kitten's head.
"Where is your family?" Ernest asked as he gently picked up the kitten. He walked to his rocking chair and placed her on his lap as he sat down.
"Are you alone, too...?"
Ernest knew that the kitten could not understand him, but the kitten would always look at him when he spoke, as if she actually could. The kitten purred and rubbed her head against the palm of his hands. Ernest could not help but smile at his new friend. He decided to keep the kitten and take care of it himself.
He named his new companion Lychee.
Ernest has never seen a creature as friendly and as loyal as Lychee. He did not feel sad anymore, there no longer was a reason to be. Working in the farm is very hard, especially now that he is getting older and weaker. Still, he faced each waking day with a smile on his face, knowing that he there is someone by his side that will face the world with him.
The afternoon were both their favorite time of the day. Ernest would spend the whole afternoon in his rocking chair with Lychee laying on his lap, and then he would spend hours telling her his favorite stories that he used to tell to his children when they were little. He knew that the kitten may not be able to understand, he still enjoyed doing it. Every time the farmer tells his stories, the kitten is always focused on him... Especially when he tells the story about a paradise, a peaceful place that grew the juiciest fruits and finest vegetables.
Ernest smiled weakly as he remembered his family, and tried to hold back his tears. Lychee looked at him and placed her paw on his hand, and he responded with a weak smile as the sad thoughts faded away. "I saw them there," Ernest continued.
"My lovely daughters running in the grass, dancing with the wind... They were so beautiful and innocent, filled with life! Then I would see most beautiful woman in the world walking up to them, and they would all smile and wave at me...
They are calling for me, Lychee... And soon I shall come to them.
They are all waiting for me."
One early morning, Lychee woke up to sound of thunder. It was pouring outside, and the kitten was scared every time she would hear the thunder. Ernest still isn't awake which seemed strange, as he always woke up earlier than his furry friend. The kitten ran to Ernest's room and was relieved to find him sound asleep. She jumped to the bed and tried and wake him up, but something seemed odd. Ernest would not wake up nor respond to her calls.
She tried to push him, but he would not budge. No matter what the kitten did, there was no response. Then Lychee realized what was going on.
Ernest isn't going to wake up today.
The kitten whimpered as she laid down next to him, placing her head against his hand. She closed her eyes as she went to sleep, hoping to wake up once again and see her friend alive and well... That what she has just seen was nothing but a bad dream.
It wasn't soon until Ernest's neighbors noticed his absence and found him laying lifeless on his bed along with his companion next to him. The whole town came to the farmer's funeral, and then they would leave flowers in his house, as well as an occasional bowl of milk for Lychee.
Ernest has left the house and his garden for James and his family. Every morning James tend to his friend's farm, but he barely entered his friend's house. To him this place still belongs to his beloved friend, and he promised him that he would take care of his precious garden as long as he is still alive.
Lychee was rarely found outside Ernest's house. The first few days after the farmer's death she would look for him inside the house, but he is nowhere to be found. Nowadays, James and the people who pass by the Ernest's house would find the kitten laying on the rocking chair. Every night she would sleep on his bed, dreaming that his beloved owner had come home. The waiting made her lonely, and the fact that she was all alone made her feel worse... But this was all that she could do. She would stay strong until the day Ernest returns.
As months passed, Lychee only grew lonelier. She still hopes and waits for her friend's return, but as time passes by her heart was filled with sorrow. Every single day she would sit in the rocking chair waiting, but waiting was all she did. There were no snacks or treats. There were no one to play games with. There were no stories.
One day, Lychee visited the garden. As she looked at the beautiful trees and plants she remembered the fun times that she and Ernest had. The garden looked the same as it did before; beautiful and filled with life, but it only made her feel worse.
He isn't here.
Just as soon as she was about to leave, Lychee heard a soft crash in the bushes. When she ran to see what it was, she was surprised to see a pair of curious eyes that met hers.
It was a baby bird. She has seen these kinds of birds before, but it's size seemed bigger than normal. It must have been trying to fly, only to crash into the bushes that saved its fall. Lychee approached the bird, trying to see if it would fly or walk away. The little bird did not do any of these things. In fact, it chirped happily and spread its small wings, as if it were trying to reach her.
Lychee smiled. She knew that the helpless creature could not survive if it was left alone. She remembered being in the same situation, as well as the loving person that took her in. The cat has decided to take care of the baby bird herself and dug up worms for it. She named the baby bird "Willow", and the two had been inseparable ever since that encounter.
The afternoons were both their favorite time of the day. They would lay down on the rocking chair and rest after spending the entire morning playing in Ernest's garden, rolling around in the grass and dancing with the wind.
After making sure that Willow is comfortable in her arms, Lychee then closed her eyes and drifted into a peaceful slumber. She dreamt of a beautiful paradise with the juiciest fruits and the finest vegetables, where her loving owner is waiting for her...
I'll pray for your happiness. Always!
