She was in a litter of twelve and no one wanted any of them. Their only fault? Their fur was black instead of white. But despite the odds, she found herself adopted into a loving family. They even gave her a name, Jewel.

She lived a life of leisure, sleeping by day and sleeping by night, only leaving the comforts of the sofa to eat her human topped dog food. Each time she left her seat she'd stretch as far as she could before slowly sauntering away. Life was bliss.

Her owners taught her simple commands, such as; sit, stay, paw, and lay down -- the last of which she excelled at. They'd taker her for walks and bring her to the park where she could play with the children and with the balance beams, which she walked across every time she saw one. Occasionally someone would leave the door open at the house and Jewel would go for a run, how much fun she had when her owners chased her. She was too fast, they'd never catch her! (See this is why she slept so much, she needed to store away energy for her impromptu runs). And as darkness would fall she'd come home, wagging her tail behind her.

Unfortunately, one day she didn't come home. At the age of 13 Jewel escaped from home during a snowstorm for one of her runs and was hit by a car. The very next day she saw her family for the very last time. It was a heartfelt good bye. All those years they shared, all those memories came flooding back. Jewel remembered the time her female human dressed her up in human clothes, the skirt was hard to walk in, but they had fun. They laughed together. Today they'd cry together. Oh, the price love is a broken heart.
