In the wintery air, snowflakes curled and danced in the wind. They fluttered in the air before carpeting the ice in glittering white. Each one sapped the sound from the world, so that in the flurry, Luminae walked in silence. With each step, he made no sound, and he left no tracks in his path. There was nothing in the world to say he was there - just the way he liked it.
It was perfect out here in the ice. Only the occasional lost explorer strayed past, and they threw frozen cookies to him or at him as they made their way back to their villages. Out here, the wind was cold and refreshing, and late at night, he alone could see the thin, dancing ribbons of green and blue and purple. They were his northern lights. And in the months of night, when the sun, if it rose, was dimmer than moon, Luminae had the tundra to himself, with the dancing northern lights for his company.
He could tell from the way that Lyra had moved behind the glacier that it was close to the time he should head back to visit Aspen. If he turned back now, he could reach her within an hour or two. He stopped. When he came out here into the ice and waste, he came for one reason: to sever all attachments. Like the ground here, frozen solid for meters upon meters, Luminae had welcomed the chill of the artic deep into his heart. It had not hurt.
But when he visited Aspen, he wondered if life on the tundra was not the best place for him. She took such care for him. Every day, she created a new flavor of ice cream, just for him. And she made him a sundae with sprinkles and cherries on, and different chocolates and sauces drizzled on the whipped cream. Some days there were hazelnuts, and some days there were crushed mints. Each and every day, Aspen created a new sundae for him to enjoy. Each and every day, Luminae walked into her home and shared a meal with her, an act of intimacy he had sworn to share with no one. He wanted to have no ties, and yet...
And yet he went to Aspen's igloo every day.
He did like it. Despite being made of ice blocks, her igloo was warm inside. There were several layers of carpets and rugs on the ground, all in bright blues and purples, and they were all soft on his paws. He hadn't realized how hard the ice had made his paws until he walked into her igloo, just as he hadn't realized how cold the tundra had made his fur. But even a few hours a day brought him enough warmth to last him until the next, and whenever Luminae considered staying away, the thought of miraculous ice cream sundaes and Aspen's so perfect ear scratches strengthened his resolve to return. It wasn't really an attachment. It was only a sundae.
