Meioh Setsuna (冥王 せつな) is Sailor Pluto, the guardian of Time. Wielding the Garnet Rod, she watches over the gates of space and time, searching out anomalies and preventing people from altering the past or future. Unlike the other Senshi, she survives the fall of Silver Millennium and remains in her solitary, timeless existence. Even after the rise of Crystal Tokyo, where Neo Queen Serenity and the Senshi openly protect the world, Sailor Pluto is forgotten by everyone . . . or nearly everyone. Only the equally friendless and lonely little princess remembers the Senshi guarding the past, present, and future.

That is, until the future of Crystal Tokyo is jeopardized by the Black Moon, when Pluto enlists the help of the Senshi of the past to protect the future. Even then, Pluto only acts as a guide, unable to leave her post to fight with them. It is not until the Silence looms that she leaves the Time Door and enters the world as Meioh Setsuna -- a reserved and thoughtful young woman who knows much more than she says. But Setsuna has hidden depths of love and courage, even knowingly laying down her own life to protect the ones she loves.

Sailor Pluto is a powerful soldier, willing to sacrifice herself to her duty; Setsuna is a compassionate, loving, loyal friend. Whether standing at the Time Door, guarding the solar system with Uranus and Neptune, or offering guidance to those who need it most, Sailor Pluto fights with the other Senshi for love and justice!

♇ WHAT'S IN A NAME ♇

♇ Setsuna's name sounds like the word 刹那, setsuna, which means "moment". Her surname, Meioh, is written with the kanji for "dark" and "king", and is the same as the Japanese word for the Greco-Roman god Hades/Pluto.

♇ Chibiusa calls her Puu, short for Puuruuto; the equivalent nickname in English is Plu.

♇ Setsuna's names in various international dubs include Trista (English); Sylvana (French); Séverine (French manga translation); Silvia (Italian); Susana (Portuguese); Raquel (Castilian); 冥王雪奈, Mingwong Suetnoi (Cantonese); 이사벨, Isabel (Korean); and 틴아, Tina (Korean manga translation).

♇ On some early merchandise in the USA, she was given the name Celia.

♇ BITS AND PIECES ♇

♇ Setsuna is both the oldest of the Senshi at 19/20, and the tallest at 178cm (5'10).

♇ In the manga, she has noticeably darker skin than the other Senshi.

♇ Her birthday is October 29^th, making her a Scorpio. In astrology, Scorpio is ruled by the planet Pluto.

♇ She loves green tea, but hates eggplant.

♇ Setsuna is a university student at the same school that Mamoru and Motoki attend. Her favorite subject is physics and her least favorite is music. In the manga, she later takes a job as the school nurse at Chibiusa and Hotaru's school.

♇ She loves fashion, sewing, and shopping, and wants to become a designer someday.

♇ Pluto, and later Setsuna, is very attached to Chibiusa, who was the only person who visited her at the Space-Time Door. She is protective and in some ways motherly towards Chibiusa, and will sacrifice herself to protect her.

♇ In the manga, Setsuna joins Haruka and Michiru in caring for the orphaned Hotaru, and together they form a family. Hotaru calls her Setsuna-mama.

♇ It's never made clear if Setsuna was actually reborn on Earth as the other Senshi were, or if Sailor Pluto simply invented the identity of Setsuna Meioh.

♇ There is a panel in the manga that hints that Sailor Pluto was in love with King Endymion. However, she never acts or openly says anything about it. In the musicals, she is portrayed as having feelings for Endymion, and even being able to empathize with Beryl about their mutual unrequited love.

♇ PRETTY SOLDIER ♇

♇ Sailor Pluto was originally assigned to guard the Space-Time Door, which she was never permitted to leave -- even to assist the other Senshi. Neo Queen Serenity later allowed her to leave the Space-Time Door to help Uranus and Neptune.

♇ Sailor Pluto's existence was extremely lonely at the Space-Time Door, and in fact she was all but forgotten. Her only friends were the equally lonely princess Small Lady (Chibiusa), and Chibiusa's guardian kitten Diana.

♇ Pluto is the Senshi of Time, and she is aware of when something or someone is altering the timeline to affect either the past or future. She also has the ability to permit people to travel through time using the Space-Time Door or by giving them one of her Time Keys. She has the power to stop time, although it is forbidden to do so and breaking the taboo will result in her death.

♇ Although Pluto was the god of death in Greco-Roman mythology and Saturn was a god of seasonal cycles and time, Sailor Pluto is the Senshi of Time and Sailor Saturn is the Senshi of Destruction. A slight nod to Pluto's mythological origins can be seen in the name of her attack, Dead Scream.

♇ Pluto's dominant color is black and her uniform colors are black and garnet red, though she also has aura/attack colors (and in some musical versions, uniform colors) in shades of very deep purple. She also has a recurring motif of keys.

♇ Pluto's original uniform is sleeveless and her choker has a red gem accent, in both the anime and manga.

♇ Like the other Outer Senshi, Pluto has a weapon -- a tall, key-shaped silver staff called the Garnet Rod. It takes its name from the jewel in the heart-shaped setting at its top, called the Garnet Orb (one of the three Talismans). Pluto can use the Garnet Rod as either a focus for her magical attacks, or as a physical weapon in its own right.

♇ In the manga, Pluto's fuku includes a chatelaine with several keys dangling from it. These keys allow a person to move through time to the Space-Time Door. Chibiusa takes one of these keys to help her return to the past to find the Silver Crystal in R/Black Moon.

♇ In the anime, Pluto upgrades into Super Sailor Pluto during the Stars season, with the help of Sailor Saturn. In the manga, she later achieves Eternal form as well.

♇ In the manga, each of the planetary Senshi is the princess of her own planet and has her own castle, given to her by Queen Serenity. These castles are named after the respective planets' moons. Pluto's castle is called Castle Charon.

R SEASON/BLACK MOON ARC

Garnet Rod: The Garnet Rod is a long silver staff, shaped like an enormous key, with a heart-shaped top that contains the Garnet Orb. Pluto uses it to open and close the Space-Time Door. She also uses it for both her magical attack, Dead Scream, and for deadly physical attacks with the staff itself.

Space-Time Door: A huge gateway in an alternate dimension, guarded by Pluto. It is shaped like a freestanding doorway with the phases of the moon carved on it. Pluto can open the gate into any time and allow someone to travel there, although she is also duty-bound to kill intruders who try to approach and use the door. From her post at the Door, she can sense changes and anomalies in time, but she can't herself leave. Pluto is not able to leave the Door until the reign of Neo Queen Serenity (although she is able to then travel back to the present-day of the series).

Space-Time Key: These keys allow the person holding them to travel through time, bringing them to the Space-Time Door. In the manga, Pluto wears them on a chatelaine. Most notably, Chibiusa uses one to move back and forth from Crystal Tokyo to the past.

S SEASON/INFINITY ARC

Pluto Lip Rod: Setsuna's transformation item. She can use it to transform into Sailor Pluto with the phrase "♇ Pluto Planet Power, Makeup!"

♇ Dead Scream: Sailor Pluto's primary attack, in which she uses the Garnet Rod to summon a ball of energy and throw it at her target.

Garnet Orb: The Garnet Orb is set at the top of Pluto's staff. It is one of the three Talismans, along with Uranus' Space Sword and Neptune's Deep Aqua Mirror. Unlike Uranus and Neptune, Pluto already had possession of her Talisman, and used it to remove the other Talismans from Haruka and Michiru's pure hearts without killing them. When the three Talismans were finally brought together, they summoned the Holy Grail.
In the manga, Uranus and Neptune already had their Talismans. The main purpose of the Talismans was to summon Sailor Saturn to end the world and allow it to be reborn.

Time Stop: A forbidden power that allows Pluto to stop the flow of time for herself and anyone else she chooses. In the anime, she uses it in S to prevent Uranus and Neptune's deaths; in the manga, she uses it in the Black Moon arc to stop Dimande from destroying the space-time continuum. However, breaking the taboo and using this power results in Pluto's own death.

Chronos Typhoon: A manga-only attack, in which Sailor Pluto detaches the Garnet Orb from her staff and uses it to send a rush of energy at her target. It's equivalent to the attacks that Uranus and Neptune use in the anime and manga with their Talismans (Space Sword Blaster and Submarine Reflection), but is never shown in the anime.

Garnet Ball: A manga-only defensive maneuver, in which Sailor Pluto uses the Garnet Orb to create a spherical shield around herself and the other Senshi.

Dark Dome Close: A manga-only ability used by Sailor Pluto to close off the Space-Time Door and its corridors without having to be present there.

SUPERS SEASON/DREAM ARC

Pluto Crystal: Setsuna's sailor crystal, a heart-shaped stone revealed to her by Hotaru. She uses it to transform into Super Sailor Pluto with the phrase "Pluto Crystal Power, Makeup!" The Pluto Crystal appears only in the manga.

Guardian Pluto: Setsuna's Sailor Power Guardian, a small sprite who looks like a tiny version of Sailor Pluto. She resides in Castle Charon. Guardian Pluto appears only in the manga.

SAILOR STARS SEASON/STARS ARC

Galactica Cannon: While controlled by Galaxia in the manga, Sailor Pluto and Sailor Saturn use the Garnet Orb and Silence Glaive in a dual attack, sending a massive surge of energy at Sailor Chibi Chibi. It's not shown if they are able to perform this dual attack while not under Galaxia's control.

Star Seed: Star seeds are crystals that are the embodiment of each person's life. In the anime, Setsuna's star seed is a black crystal with a glowing red core; in the manga, it is the Pluto Crystal.
It is a true star seed (anime) or sailor crystal (manga), the star seed of a planet(/star/asteroid/etc). Being born with a true star seed/sailor crystal enables a person to transform into the Senshi or guardian of that planet.
