Kaioh Michiru (海王 みちる) is seemingly perfect. She is beautiful, elegant, and intelligent; she is an artistic prodigy and a violin virtuoso, with psychic sensitivity and unworldly grace. Wealthy, worldly, and poised, Michiru always seems to have any situation perfectly in hand. But Michiru's polished exterior hides unpredictable, sometimes stormy depths within...

Perhaps more than any of the other Senshi, Michiru is prepared to accept the harsh realities of being a soldier and guardian of Earth. Despite her attraction to the track star Tenoh Haruka, she tries to stop Haruka from becoming a Senshi, warning her that she can never undo the transformation. She is prepared to have blood on her hands to prevent the other Senshi from having to take the Talismans from the bearers' pure hearts, and to lay down her own life to prevent the approach of the Silence that will destroy the world. Michiru is calculating, fiercely territorial, and can be icily disdainful of those who seem weak or unprepared. But she is also dedicated, protective, and self-sacrificing, unafraid to do whatever it takes to protect the earth.

Michiru is a complex character, and the surface she displays is rarely a true reflection of her depths. She can be aloof, enigmatic, and cold; but she's equally capable of being courageous, generous, and kind. Her delicate exterior hides a brave soldier who will stop at nothing to protect the earth and her companions. As Sailor Neptune, she's a dedicated guardian who is unafraid to do whatever it takes to fight for love and justice!

♆ WHAT'S IN A NAME ♆

♆ Michiru's name sounds like 盈ちる, michiru, which means "to rise" (as in a rising tide). Her surname, Kaioh, is written with the kanji for "sea" and "king", and is the same as the Japanese word for the Greco-Roman god Poseidon/Neptune.

♆ Michiru's names in various international translations include Michelle (English); Mylène (French); Milena (Italian); Mariana (Portuguese); Vicky (Castilian); 海王美智留, Hoiwong Meijilau (Cantonese); 모니카, Monika (Korean); and 핼이, Haeri (Korean manga translation).

♆ Michiru was given the name Nerissa on some early English merchandise releases.

♆ BITS AND PIECES ♆

♆ Michiru's birthday is March 6^th, making her a Pisces. In astrology, the sign Pisces is ruled by Neptune.

♆ She likes collecting cosmetics, playing the violin, painting, and swimming.

♆ Her favorite color is marine blue.

♆ Her favorite food is sashimi, and her least favorite is sea cucumber and kikurage mushrooms.

♆ Michiru is a concert violinist and performs multiple times over the course of the series, including holding a concert with the Three Lights. She also plays duets with Haruka, who is a pianist.

♆ After the events of the S season/Infinity arc, Michiru joins Haruka and Setsuna in raising the reborn Hotaru. Hotaru calls her Michiru-mama.

♆ Michiru is the only one of the Senshi, other than Rei, to consistently display psychic abilities; she's shown to have prophetic dreams/visions, and to have premonitions of upcoming battles.

♆ URANUS AND NEPTUNE ♆

♆ Michiru is in a romantic relationship with Tenoh Haruka/Sailor Uranus, making them the only Senshi apart from Usagi who have a canon relationship.

♆ Many international dubs toned down Haruka and Michiru's relationship, or rewrote it altogether to be platonic. In the English dub, Amara and Michelle were rewritten as cousins; while in the French dub, Frédérique and Mylène deliberately posed as boyfriend and girlfriend in an act to protect their identities. In Italy, they were treated as close friends who thought of each other as sisters.

♆ Michiru meets Haruka some time before their identities as Senshi were revealed; each of them seems to have had some premonition of the other. Recognizing Michiru as the girl she had seen in a dream or vision, Haruka rejects Michiru's request to sketch her.
After this they actually have a rather acrimonious start to their relationship, treating each other coldly until Michiru reveals her true feelings after protecting Haruka during a battle: she explains that she has had feelings for Haruka since watching her race, before realizing she was a Senshi.

♆ PRETTY SOLDIER ♆

♆ Sailor Neptune's powers are centered around the sea. She is also called the soldier of embrace and the soldier of affinity. The Greco-Roman god Poseidon/Neptune was the god of the ocean.

♆ Michiru fought Daimons alone as Sailor Neptune before even meeting Haruka. It's not known exactly how she first transformed or learned that she was a Senshi, but she seems to have realized her identity after seeing visions of the Silence and Sailor Uranus.

♆ In the S season, Uranus and Neptune keep themselves apart from the other Senshi. The reason they give for this is that Sailor Moon and her friends are too idealistic and naïve to do what is necessary to prevent the Silence. However, as removing the Talismans from pure hearts will kill the bearers, they also don't want anyone else to bear the burden of being responsible for murder.

♆ One of the three Talismans, the Deep Aqua Mirror, belongs to Sailor Neptune and was hidden in her heart crystal.

♆ Neptune's dominant color is sea green, and her uniform colors are marine blue and sea green. Her choker is uniquely set with a green gem and gold accents. Like Sailor Uranus, her gloves go only to her wrists, rather than to her elbows as the other Senshis' do.

♆ In the anime, Sailor Neptune receives a powerup into Super Sailor Neptune from Hotaru. In the manga, she later achieves Eternal form as well.

♆ In the manga, each of the planetary Senshi is the princess of her own planet and has her own castle, given to her by Queen Serenity. These castles are named after the respective planets' moons. Neptune's castle is named Castle Triton.

S SEASON/INFINITY ARC

Neptune Lip Rod: Michiru's transformation item. She can use it to transform into Sailor Neptune with the phrase "♆ Neptune Planet Power, Makeup!" It's not known how or where Michiru received her Lip Rod.

♆ Deep Submerge: An attack in which Neptune summons a tidal wave and forms the water into a planet-shaped sphere of glowing energy, which she then sends at her target.

Deep Aqua Mirror: An oval hand mirror with a golden frame. The back of it is green with the symbol for Neptune on it in white, and it appears to have Art Nouveau detailing on the frame. It is one of the three mysterious Talismans that Uranus and Neptune, as well as the Death Busters, are searching for; in the end, it proves to be sealed inside of Michiru's pure heart crystal. Michiru can use the Deep Aqua Mirror even when not transformed: it can show her visions, see through illusions, or be used as part of a magical attack.
In the manga, Neptune already has the Deep Aqua Mirror in her possession when she first appears. She loans it to Chibiusa during the Dream arc as a proof that she and the other Senshi will return; Chibiusa is later able to use the Mirror to find the Outer Senshi and teleport to them.

Marine Cathédrale: The name Michiru gives to her violin in the manga. Her violin is a Stradivarius said to be worth 500 million yen. (In the anime, the Marine Cathedral is an unfinished church where Uranus and Neptune fight Eudial, and where their Talismans are revealed.)

SUPERS SEASON/DREAM ARC

Neptune Crystal: Michiru's sailor crystal. It is a heart-shaped stone revealed to her by Hotaru. She uses it to transform into Super Sailor Neptune with the phrase "Neptune Crystal Power, Makeup!" The Neptune Crystal appears only in the manga.

Guardian Neptune: A Sailor Power Guardian, Guardian Neptune appears as a small sprite who looks like a tiny version of Sailor Neptune, and refers to herself as Michiru's "other self". She resides in Castle Triton. Guardian Neptune appears only in the manga.

♆ Submarine Reflection: An attack in which Neptune uses her Deep Aqua Mirror to reflect bright white light at her target, slicing them apart.

SAILOR STARS SEASON/STARS ARC

Submarine Violon Tide: A manga-only attack, in which Sailor Neptune uses her violin to help create a wave of energy to attack her target. When she is controlled by Galaxia, she uses an alternate version called Galactica Violon Tide to attack Sailor Moon.

Star Seed: Star seeds are crystals that are the embodiment of each person's life. In the anime, Michiru's star seed is an aquamarine crystal with a glowing core; in the manga, it is the Neptune Crystal.
It is a true star seed (anime) or sailor crystal (manga), the star seed of a planet(/star/asteroid/etc). Being born with a true star seed/sailor crystal enables a person to transform into the Senshi or guardian of that planet.
