The Winter Omen
The few who survived being lost in the frigid wastes of the Northern winter have attributed their kin's death to a great, winged demon, known to the locals as Sospiro.
A screech omens it's coming, a sound one may mistake for the wail of an injured woman, though it echoes across the mountains.
Yet, something different happened to me...
The garrulous trader continues, beyond the fable's well-known ending. The crowd around him quiets in curiosity, some shuffling their seats closer to hear the fable. The bard picks up on the atmosphere and plays a different tune, slow and low on his lute.
It seemed a night like any other.
The trader continues, confidently, yet not practiced.
A chill had frosted the ground beneath us. I sent my guards to gather firewood and secure the perimeter as I settled down in my carriage. No sooner had I lit my lantern when a sudden wailing surrounded me.
The trader glances at the shocked faces around him before rolling his eyes and continuing.
Not yet, ye fools. Wailing from a sudden storm. There was nothing I could do, other than hang the lantern. As sure as I knew, my men did not make it back from the storm. I, myself, had to dig meself from several feet of snow, thinking I had suffocated as the first breadth of air reached me. I collapsed on the surface, breathing thankfully every breath, yet unable to move forward. I had no energy, the dig out had taken it all. I shook, and collapsed, praying that I would not be a corpse by the morrow. It was then. Worse than the howling of wind, a louder wail than my mare giving birth. Painful, almost, to the ears. I covered them, my ears I mean, and I saw it, in the sky. A three-tailed creature, wings like an eagle, but body of a beast, a lion, a bear, what-have-you. I could hardly hear, in fact I could not. It was so loud, that for a good time after my world were silent. I fled from it, the screeching shadow in the sky, I fled from it, deeper into the snows... such a fool!
The trader laughs, waving forward another mug of ale.
The creature shrieked in the skies, circling me each night, as a vulture awaiting it's meal, or so I thought. Such a fool.
The trader shakes his head once more, one hand raising to cover his eyes.
Only when I was delirious, beyond all common sense, did I look at the beast afar, it's shadow fleeting across the sky, and decide to follow it. It's incessant, intolerable shrieking, I know not why I followed it. But I did, in my delirium of near death. With the blinding white snow, the sound was the only thing leading me forward. I could have been wandering circles in the blasted winter otherwise.
It led me to a cave, and I could not follow more, for my muscles had frozen stiff. I dragged meself into the cave, and thats when the hunter found me. The hunter who sought to slay the screaming breast, the beast who led him to me.
I'll not step foot in those winters, but I will warn you. If you hear the beastly screech of Sospiro; don't run. Follow it.
It will save you.
