Once there was a mermaid, a spirit of purest grace and most fearless depths, that swam so deep and so far that she could describe every inch of the ocean floor. But she had no breath and no voice; while she could wonder at the light, she could not break the sea surface to bathe in the sun's glory. So she watched the shadows of things blocking the light from above, and grew to recognize a graceful silhouette that dipped close whenever she swam as close to the boundary between sea and sky as possible. This being was eager and fast and, on those rare occasions when she won their races, it skimmed the sea surface with a light touch and a good sense of humor. When little ones ventured too close to the surface, this sky king also chased away vicious gryphons. For her the sea king breached the surface, drawing breath and issuing forth song to adore and promise to the sky king forever.
