Bes was a deity originally African in origin who was absorbed into the Egyptian pantheon. In the earliest depictions Bes was a male lion rearing up on his hind paws - he was called “The Fighter” because of his ferocity. Bes protected anyone who placed themselves under his care, and Egyptian soldiers had images of Bes inscribed on their shields or bows, or would drink from Bes-engraved goblets prior to battle.

Later, Bes became a favorite god of the everyday Egyptian people, and was often depicted on household items, and was even painted on the walls of the home or tattooed on the body. Statues of Bes were positioned at gates for protection. Bes frightened off bad spirits with his fearsome face, but was fiercely loyal to his family, and comforted them in times of sickness or childbirth. Bes was associated with music, dancing, and good cheer. One of his titles was Hity ("The Dancer.")

Bes helped to encourage sleep and drove away bad dreams. Bes was considered to bring good luck and prosperity to married couples and their children, and when a child was born he would stay by the cradle and entertain it - when a baby smiled for no reason, it was thought that Bes was making faces at the child to make them laugh! Mischievous Bes was blamed when food went bad or when a person stumbled.

Bes was also a bringer of peace to the dead, being depicted on the headrests supporting the heads of mummies, and helped guard their heart.

Bes’ wife was thought to be Taweret.
