They say I am just a cat, but then none of them have been here long enough to know the truth. Maybe with the exception of Dumbledore, but he has never considered enlightening them. Filch treats me well enough, I guess, but even an Animagus like myself, gets tired of eating fish after this many years.


If only that year's students had been a little more studious, this might not have happened. All the professors and students were assembled in the Great Hall. The students were to be taught about Animagi, that being wizards who can turn into an animal at will, with five of us demonstrating our Animagus forms. How was I to know, that one of those little terrors had swapped my wand for one of theirs, which just happened to have the same look, but unknown to anyone, had a crack running across it. When I picked the wand up, and muttered the incantation, the wand split down the centre just as I transformed, filling the room with a cloud of smoke.


The other teachers cleared the air, and shot some firecrackers from their wands to try and restore some quiet amongst the students, and instructed us to transform back. The other four teachers had transformed before the instructions had even been given, but as much as I tried, I just couldn't achieve it.


I ran from the Great Hall, the students' jeering laughter ringing in my ears, and didn't stop until I reached the hospital wing. I won't go into detail about what they tried, to get me to transform back, the memory is something I would rather try to forget. After several hours, they called on some experts from St Mungo's Magical Hospital in London, but nobody had ever experienced a problem like this before, and they were all unable to help.


Of course I couldn't return to teaching now, and even if I could transform back, the memory of their laughter meant I no longer had a warm gracious nature towards Hogwarts' students. I remained in the hospital wing for a very long time, the days turning into long weeks, which in turn stretched into even longer months.


Once Dumbledore took over as headmaster though, he insisted that I should move out from the hospital wing. He'd found a new caretaker, a Squib named Mr Filch, who apparently would need assistance that only I could give.


So now, I spend my days patrolling the corridors, trying to catch as many of those nasty little students as I possibly can. And maybe one day, Filch will let me give them their punishment: I've been sharpening my claws for that very purpose.

Filch owned a cat called Mrs. Norris, a scrawny, dust-colored creature with bulging, lamp like eyes just like Filch's. She patrolled the corridors alone ....and it was the dearest ambition of many to give Mrs. Norris a good kick.
