With all of the light dancing between bits of stained glass,
no one notices the Listener.

Pradeep becomes the glass around him, rarely moving, baring witness to whispered prayers and the speeches of great and noble men. The goodness of their intentions coalesce on his bipectinate antennae, collecting until they eventually drip off and sprout wings of their own.

Goodwill manifest.

They become little mothen-forms of their own, taking the shape of their creator, fluttering down the shafts of sparkling light to bless those below with gifts of fortitude and perseverance.

But people are people.

So he also watches them fail. Sees all-too-familiar patterns repeat themselves again and again and again.

And again.

… and again.

He muses,
Perhaps people don’t live long enough to really learn their lessons…

What a profoundly sad thought that was.

So he sits.

And he watches.

And he listens.

And he helps.

Or at least he tries.

As much as people will let him.

That’s the thing about people:
You can only help people who want help.

So when you chance upon those lovely people who always seem positive, who want to look on the bright-side, who always keep trying, the people who have some indefinable kind of glow coming from their souls, it’s quite probable they’ve meandered through Pradeep’s ever watchful gaze and passed under one of his sunbeams.

There will always be good in the world.
He knows it.
He’s certain of it.
