definitions!

friendship bracelets

friendship bracelets originate from central and south america. the tradition is to tie the bracelet onto a dear friend, and once the bracelet is tied on, the friend is to make a wish. the bracelet must be worn by someone until it falls off by itself. upon falling off, the wish will come true.
friendship bracelets are very important to me. they are a symbol of everlasting friendship and a loving bond between me and my friend. i love bracelets so much that i decided to make this pet teaching you about them, so maybe it will inspire you to pick up some string and make a friendship bracelet for someone you love a lot. ♥

skeins
pic from stitchmodern

skeins are defined as: "a length of thread or yarn, loosely coiled and knotted." skeins are not to be confused with spools! spools are generally for thread for sewing. skeins are usually yarn or embroidery floss. :^)

working string, lagging string

the "working string" is the string that you will be using to make the knot. for example, in a forward knot, your leftmost string is your "working string." the lagging string is the string that you will be using to "slide the knot up" on. for example, in a forward knot, your right string is your "lagging string."

setup!

for most bracelets, each string should be around 36 inches long (about the length of your arm.) starting a friendship bracelet usually means having 2 strings of the same color for each color, so making each one about 72 inches long (the length of your wingspan) and then folding the strings in half should work. once you have all your colors folded in half, tie a loop in a knot at the top of your bracelet. to hold the bracelet down as you are working, you can use a clipboard, or taping the string down on a table. (this is what i do.) once your bracelet has the loop knot in it, when you are done with the bracelet, you can use the loop you created at the beginning to tie on your bracelet. easy!

knots!

knots are the building blocks of bracelets. once you find a pattern or a tutorial you like, they will use these knots as instructions on how to complete your bracelet. i will link tutorials at the bottom of the page, but for now, i hope i can make you comfy with how to tie the knots for your pattern!!!

half-hitch knot

this is the most basic and fundamental knot of friendship bracelet making! it requires one string looping around another one time, and pulling up to tighten. each complete knot requires two half-hitch knots.

forward knot

forward knots can be made by making a "4" with the working string over the lagging string, then pulling up to tighten the knot. think to yourself, "forward means FOURward"!

every "knot" is made twice! for example, if you do a forward knot, you will bring the working string over the lagging string once forwards, pull up to tighten, then again, and tighten.

backward knot

backward knots are the opposite of forward knots. they can be made by making a "backwards 4" with the working string over the lagging string.

every "knot" is made twice! for example, if you do a backward knot, you will bring the working string over the lagging string once backwards, pull up to tighten, then again, and tighten.

forward backward knot

forward backward knots are what they sound like: making a 4 with the working string over the lagging string, pulling up to tighten, then making a backwards 4 and tightening.
in simpler terms, you would make one "half-hitch" to the right, then one "half-hitch" to the left.

backward forward knot

backward forward knots are the opposite of forward backward knots. they can be made by making a backwards 4 with the working string over the lagging string, pulling up to tighten, then making a regular 4 and tightening the knots.
in simpler terms, you would make one "half-hitch" to the left, then one "half-hitch" to the right.

finishing up!

when you are comfortable with the length of your bracelet, you can finish the bracelet with a simple knot. there are other knots you can do, such as a sliding knot (this is what i do) buckles, or teardrop loops. there are a lot of tutorials on how to do these on youtube and friendship-bracelets.net (this is the website i use!)
congratulations on making your bracelet!!!!

beginner friendly bracelets!

pics from my bracelet collection

chinese staircase

this bracelet is the best one to start out with! this can be done with as little as 3 strings, or as many as 10! this bracelet only requires the forward knot. the bracelet can be made by making (x) forward knots around ALL the other strings, change strings, then repeat the process. more in depth instructions can be found here!

candystripe

the striped bracelet is next up. this bracelet also requires only one knot: the forward knot. this strings should be set up in the order ABCABC. this bracelet can be done similarly, only using the leftmost string, making a forward knot around each individual following string, switching strings, then repeat the process. more in depth instructions can be found here!

chevron

the chevron bracelet requires 2 knots: the forward knot and the backward knot. this can be done with 6 strings to 10 strings, in the order ABCCBA, or a mirror image of the left side to the right side/vice versa. the first part is making forward knots until the working string is in the middle. then, switching sides, using the right most string, making backward knots until the working string meets in the middle, and then joining the two strings (should be the same color) with a complete forward knot. more in depth instructions can be found here!
