Demeanour
Sam, in his heart of hearts, is a good man. He wants to do what's best for other people and the world but unfortunately his exposure to ...certain things has dampened this. His pursuit of his addiction has cost him his humanity and the very qualities that made him "the good one" of the Winchester family. If necessary, he will lie, steal, and cheat others if he thinks it will further his goals. He has become much more cold and emotionless, concerned primarily with what he wants and any means to get what he wants. He has tried to regain his more sensitive and rational side but has already given up. He doesn't trust himself to any extent and indulges in reckless, selfish behaviors because he believes he has nothing else to lose.
Despite the blurring of his own moral lines, though, Sam subscribes firmly to the idea of justice, that people receive retribution for their wrongs. He continues to hold this ideal that justice will prevail, even if that justice is not "good" winning over "evil."
However, even above justice, Sam firmly believes in loyalty, in family, especially those not connected to him by blood lines. Only a few times has Sam's loyalty to his family and close friends been compromised. Even then, though, Sam decides that it would be better off, since he believes he has become a monster in more ways than one and would only be a burden to those that mattered most to him.
That being said, Sam has poor self-esteem and suffers frequently from insecurities regarding his relationships with others. He explicitly states that he knows that no one can trust him (not even himself) and that he doesn't ever expect anyone else to again. He gave up hunting to try to put his past behind him, but frequently found himself doubting. He desires so much to find some way to better himself, in some way, even if it means engaging in hunting again. He refuses to believe much else, especially in respect to hunting, and will display his more stubborn, arrogant, and snide side of his personality in response. This derives not so much from the desire to be right or outsmart anyone but from his own self-hate that drives his life.
Sam is also a very empathetic individual. He eagerly listens to the problems and worries of those around him to hopefully release some sense of catharsis from them. However, more often than not, he will attempt to use this information against them at some later point or seeing this as a chance to better understand the odds stacked against him. As such, he sees this quality as an advantage in his favor; he allows others to gain trust in him while he gathers information. However, he doesn't always use his empathy for malicious purposes. At times, he uses it as a way to gain insight into another's personality and to judge how they will act in a particular situation. In the past, this enabled him and his brother to better hunt the evils around them by gauging whether or not the victim will be able to handle the implications of the situation. If not, Sam recognizes that they need to be kept out of harm's way as much as possible, unless they could be useful in some way to furthering his cause, whether that be gaining power or finishing a hunt.
Background:
Sam was born on May 2, 1983, only a matter of months before the fire that killed his mother. Growing up, he was taught to be a soldier and hunter, to expect the supernatural to be behind every twist and turn in the world. Throughout his life, Sam changed from school to school as his family traveled all over America, defeating the things that go bump in the night. He hated the constant change and general inability to make lasting friends and this is what initially drove him to butt heads with his father. When old enough, Sam enrolled in Stanford and walked out on his family to attend school in California.
During his time at university, he met and dated Jessica Moore. She helped him to realize his dreams of becoming a lawyer and encouraged him greatly to pursue this career path during college. With her death in 2005, though, he became inconsolable and willingly accepted his brother’s offer to look for their dad so Sam could take a personal revenge for the pain inflicted upon him. While on the road, beginnings of precognition and telekinesis begin to manifest when he is under great duress but when pressured to by the Yellow-Eyed-Demon who killed his mother and girlfriend, can’t seem to. His family (Dean and John) is tortured and nearly killed by said demon. They are rushed to the hospital but before they can reach it, a semi plows into their ’67 Impala.
At the hospital, Sam becomes distraught at the potential of Dean’s death and realizes just how close he and his brother have become. He is the first to recognize that Dean’s spirit remains in the hospital and utilizes a ‘talking spirit board’ to communicate with his comatose brother. When Dean is brought back, Sam stumbles across his father’s dead body; John gave up his soul so that Dean might survive. Over the next few months, Sam slowly copes with John’s death and pressures Dean to do the same. Instead, his brother becomes more and more violent and reckless, which disturbs Sam deeply. He worries and frets over the mental state of Dean continually until he finds out that John’s last words to Dean were about potentially having to kill Sam for his ability to sometime in the future turn evil. In a plot by the demon who killed his family, Sam is trapped in Cold Oak in South Dakota in a sort of battle royale-esque free-for-all to survive. His spinal cord is severed by another "gifted child" Jake and he dies in his brother's arms.
Dean brings Sam back to life, though, by means of a crossroads demon. But it is not long before the younger figures out what his brother has done. Sam vows to help Dean find a way out of his deal. However, in the process of trying to stop come up with a solution, Sam is impaled and killed by a mystery assailant. Strangely enough, he is saved - brought back to life (just barely) by some unknown force. He was then taken to a hospital in Chicago, where he is currently suffering from temporary amnesia.
Other: Ref1|Ref2
Relationships: Dean Winchester (Brother; Deceased, Alive) | Mary Winchester (Mother; Deceased) | John Winchester (Father; Deceased) | Bobby Singer (Father-in-all-but-blood)
Extra
Items: Bags of rock salt, holy water, assorted knives, guns, books (and more books), dead man's blood, chalk, multiple rosaries, newspaper clippings.
Skills:No longer has any supernatural powers (that he can remember...) but has advanced weapons training from his time as a hunter. His father trained him and his brother to be warriors in all situations and while that was extremely useful while he hunted, Sam now sees it almost as a hinderance; he can't walk into a bar without first identifying all the exits, potential threats, where salt would normally be stored and which weapon would fight off said threats the best. Also, he has the ability of pre-cognitive dreams but they haven't occurred much as of late and when they do, he rarely speaks of them.
Sammy W. based off of Sam Winchester - but they aren't quite the same person - and their histories differ quite drastically. The background art was edited by me, and originally drawn by SpunkCake; go see her art - especially if you are an SPN fan. Most of the description is thanks to nomoreleftshoe at Livejournal - the analysis of his character is pretty much spot on.
