The teashop crew were engaged in a fierce battle of wits. Winston had Noah at a critical point...one false move and it would all be over. Lightning flashed outside the window of the tiny teashop, followed by the sound of thunder crashing through the rain and rattling the very shingles of the building. It was all down to this move...

A sudden fierce knocking at the door caused Winston to lose concentration.

"Oh dash it all, who's that at this hour? Get that, Giddy, I'm about to destroy this infidel feline here once and for all."

Gideon put down his copy of Metalwork Monthly and frowned at Winston.

"Since when am ah the butler?" He grumbled as he dragged his weight up from the too-small chair he was perched on.

"Since you always do what he says, I'd wager." Noah quipped back, not removing his eyes from the chess board for a moment.

"Oh aye, it's all 'we love ye, Giddy!' when ah make ye the chess set of ye dreams, but ye do one thing and suddenly yer the bloody mule. Ye think it's easy carting this figure around? Bloody wee teashop full of china cups and saucers made for bloody dainty soft bodied creatures. Ye'd think having a set of wings would be a blessin' but OH naw, not in this day and age of 6 square foot workplaces. ALRIGHT I'M COMING, STOP YER POUNDING" Giddy rambled on as he opened the door.

The relaxed and playful atmosphere of what had been dubbed 'storm-game night' was instantly shattered as a creature of some kind fell into the teashop. Claws out, panic stricken, the figure wailed on the floor as Gideon tried to take a hold of it's flailing limbs. Noah hopped up and rushed over immediately as Winston rose from his chair.

"Good gosh, what on Earth is going on?" Winston asked as Noah bent down over the figure being held by Gideon and pulled her hood back. A young feline stared blankly back at him with bloodshot eyes.

"Miss, can you hear me? What's happened?" Noah questioned the girl ineffectually. He felt her forehead and was met with a terrible fever. He noticed blood on her hind leg and felt for breaks, eliciting a scream of pain from the stranger, followed by a loss of consciousness.

"It looks like she's been in some kind of accident. Poor little thing, from the sight of her she's homeless too, her fur hasn't been washed properly in weeks." Noah grimaced, wiping his paw on his waistcoat. "Giddy, take her to a bed and Winnie will call the doctor. Not my bed, mind you. You know how I am about the bodily fluids of strangers."

Gideon hoisted up the vagabond into his arms and immediately noticed something unusual.

"Eh, Noah. Come wi' me a sec. I think there's somethin' else about her you didnae notice in your amateur doctorin'."

"What is it? I was going to mop the floor."

"Just come and see."

Noah put the dry mop down (he really had no idea how to mop floors) and followed Gideon into the bedroom that he was taking the girl to. As Giddy laid her down on the bed, her cloak fell aside to reveal a rather laden stomach.

"Well, she's certainly eating well for a street urchin, I must say, but I don't know why you're showing me this"

"She's not full up, Noah, ye numpty. She's expectin'. She's got enough buns in the oven to supply a company picnic. She's with litter. And I'm not talking kitty litter. Are ye hearin' me now?"

"PREGNANT? Oh great, so now I have an injured, homeless, pregnant stray in my teashop. I can't very well turn her away now, can I? We're stuck with her I bet."

"Noah, yer a heartless bastard sometimes, ah cannae look at you. Go tell Winston and find out when the doctor'll be here. Tell him the lass is still unconscious, but she's breathing fine - I think she's just fainted from the pain and fever.

Noah rolled his eyes and trotted out to speak to Winston.

"Well, Winnie, what a to-do, eh? Most exciting storm-night for a while, even though it probably means I'm about to inherit a family of...goodness knows how many."

"What ARE you talking about?"

"Our little stray is carrying a stray litter, it seems. The teashop will be overrun with them soon, I'd wager. When did the doctor say he'd be here?"

"He's on his way, not long...but wait, the girl is anticipating a birth?"

"One birth, eight births, who knows how many these cats are having these days. Oh golly I hope it's not eight. Funding is getting low here and with the looming tea tax law...I don't know what we're going to do. "

"Well, let's deal with that when we come to it. You're making a lot of wild assumptions about this girl when she could be well and back to her husband tomorrow morning."

"Husband, yeah. She looks really well taken care of."

"Well, Noah, not everyone is as luxurious as you are with their finances. And you could certainly afford to be spending a bit less on Giselle what with that looming tea tax you just mentioned."

"Hey, me and Giselle are doing just fine. You don't know what it's like to be me, used to extravagance all his life and then suddenly being cut off. You don't even know what it's like to have a girlfriend, let alone one as beautiful as Giselle that you have to work to keep."

Noah noticed the faintest hint of hurt in Winston's eyes before he changed his expression into a steely glare.

"Well, excuse me, as I have absolutely no understanding of women, I'll leave you to deal with the girl in the other room. I'm going to bed."

"Winnie! No, I didn't mean that, I'm sorry!" Noah tried to bargain with him to stay, but was too late. Winston had snapped up the chess set (a sure sign that he was mad if he was choosing not to finish a game) and gone to his room.

Noah pouted, and tried to mop the floor again.
