Ponce strutted into the library with a grin on his face. Today was going to be a good day, he was sure of it. He nodded politely to his coworkers and he slipped behind the counter and plopped down on the stool behind the check out desk. The two other women who were on the same shift simply shook their heads once Ponce had his back turned.
By most people’s standards today didn’t even have the makings of a good day; the temperature hadn’t crept close to the freezing mark and snow had started falling a few hours ago. Ponce didn’t understand why most of the residents of Veta Lake’s tallest mountain hated the snow so much; to him, it was just an extra perk of working at the third highest library in Subeta.
The library was a four-floor, oval-shaped building which had it’s entire front wall completely made of glass. This wall faced towards the lake located far below in the valley of Veta and offered a stunning view. Ponce sat staring out the giant window now, gazing wistfully at the snowflakes that were beginning to fall more heavily.
It’s gonna be a fun drive back down the mountain... he mused. After several years of working here, however, he had practically perfected his ability to drive in snow and ice. Ponce was busy imagining all the fun he could be having in the snow when he felt a hand pat him on the back. When he turned around Tisky was standing behind him following his gaze outside.
“It’s pretty isn’t it?†he asked with a smile. “First snow of the year...â€â€œVery pretty,†Ponce replied, still enchanted by the sight.
“Go out and play in it you silly git.â€
“I can’t! I’ve just started my shift. There’s no way Myrtle’s going to let me take my break already.†He dropped his voice a few notches before adding, “you know she already doesn’t like me! She doesn’t think I hear her talking to Betty all the time about my ‘annoying peppiness’ but I do.†Tisky laughed quietly.
“I’ll take your shift, I know you want to go play in the snow so don’t even bother trying to refuse. I’m midway through re-shelving some books anyways and you know I hate to leave a job unfinished.â€
“But--â€â€œNope. I don’t want to hear it. Go and enjoy it,†Tisky said with an air of finality. Ponce contemplated arguing longer but one look over his shoulder at Myrtle and Betty convinced him to take Tisky’s offer.
“Thanks,†he finally said with a smile. “I owe you one.†Tisky just smiled as Ponce grabbed his scarf and skipped out the door.
