Rueben had a hard start to life. He was a rescued stray, whom was raised alongside quite a few very large rescue dogs for a few years. So he grew up acting a bit like a dog most of the time. He was really torn up when my husband & I first got him and a really sickly kitten. He even survived being mauled by a coyote when he escaped outside for the first & LAST time. Our vet is a rock star! We have to drive out of our way to get to him. But I won't go to any other since that happened. Every other vet refused to try. That one said that's all he could do. And our boy pulled through like a champ with his help. (My husband & I adore the man.)
Rueben figured out how to open doors, turn lights on & off, and played fetch with his toys. He was a super friendly cat when it came to other animals, but very picky with humans. He absolutely adored my mother, so much so that he would try to crawl into the telephone any time she called. Meowing & purring up a storm into the receiver any time she called and he heard her voice. He would even knock the phone off the hook if she spoke into the answering machine just to meow and purr to her lol. He even had me trained to make an extra piece of chicken just for him anytime that's what I was cooking.
He lived to be just a week shy of 18 years old from the time we got him, he died peacefully of old age in his pet bed while sleeping. I will always miss him. Animals are just as unique as humans. There will never be another Rueben. I will always love the wheezing, disgusting, filth covered, tiny fur ball foundling that became a part of my life for all those years. I will ALWAYS be thankful to have had him in and as a part of my life for so long.
