The pond, a mere puddle right now, dehydrated from the sun, parching all the land.
Meralda turned her head slowly, tracing an invisible line with her keen eyes from the pond to the river that babbled. The river that only filled the pond when it over flowed in the spring. If she dug a trench from the river bank to the pond…
Laborious hours later, a sturdy log now covered in mud, the shallow trench that reached from the pond to the river flowed with water. Slowly refilling the pond. Even with the spring floods, the pond would spill its banks, then decrease, it will stay filled with the little trench. Not taking too much water from the river.
The patch of dirt she first spotted became her next project.
A week later:
The patch of dirt was now, just that.
Dirt.
Roots, grasses, flowers were now all scattered surrounding the far side of the pond. Able to naturally decay and refurbish the land naturally, while her bare patch of ground was churned.
She filled what had been removed with the dirt and mud from when she made the trench.
The work was hard. It was dirty. And she loved every minute of using her trunk to manipulate the flood debris logs and the rocks in her way as tools to cultivate the land.
Satisfied she had the base of a garden, she needed help.
Laloo bounded out of the long grass, eager to help, gathering friends who aided in gathering needed seeds.
Mirrors – with her graceful flying she gathered seeds from the tallest trees. Planting them along the rivers side to help stop soil erosion from the spring floods.
Larks – brought flower seeds to plant between the trees and the garden to help promote pollinators to continue to use the area all season long.
Zahari – Ensuring the weather was right, offered seeds for plants that were hardier to endure the conditions of the area.
Meralda planted each row with careful precision, leaving space between each plant to flourish.
Clarion stopped by often to practice her music, serenading the garden with -not aways in tune- music.
Standing back, Meralda surveyed her little oasis. With the help of her friends, she smiled.
When it came to harvest, they all enjoyed the fruits Vegetables of their labor.
