A love cut short

The taste of salt is thick on my tongue, almost overwhelming.

Atop the cliffside, I watch saltwater waves crash to shore, their scent ferried on the back of coastal winds.

I can feel his doubt, his uncertainty: it drags in the restrained pad of his steps; he bristles with a want to look back.

The light of day breaks in the path ahead, its rays starkly contrasting the Underworld's dark.

So close. So, so close.

I sense him pause at the opening of the tunnel--so close to light, so close to salvation: our chance at living out our story, to love and savor the we cheated from us.

And he looks back.

He damns us. There is no reunion, no rejoicing--

Only contrition, only remorse, only regret.

We become cheated of everything, of anything that could have been in afterlife.

The taste of salt is thick on my tongue, so wholly overwhelming--

And I become it, the grains crumbling to the ground, carried on the wind.
