I wasn't always a supervillain hoping to rule the world, you know.

Not so long ago, there was a time where I was like you; a naive optimist who truly thought that The Powers That Be really wanted our well-being.
That I could go and trust their word about the situation, that they knew what they were doing when they started to openly counter supervillains.

So, when they asked for people with superpowers to come and fight these fiends, I quickly volunteered.
At first, I was satisfied just obeying their orders; it did not require much thinking to just go and levitate troublemakers, so that they could be taken into custody.

Even though The Powers That Be told us that supervillains were a true menace, that they were ruthless and cruel, I made sure to never sink to that level - always doing my best to arrest them peacefully.
Of course, there had been times where I had to physically subdue them - but I cannot say I was a bloodthirsty zealot.

I could not say the same about some of my...former squadmates, who often were more ruthless than the criminals we were attempting to stop.
Oh, I've tried to warn my superiors several times - only to be dismissed.

"Don't be ridiculous, Helium. It's us or them."
"Do you think villains would worry about your well-being? Don't be such a bleeding heart!"
"You're just being silly. Don't question the methods your partners are taking - you are on the right side!"

That's the thing - I wasn't sure if fighting for The Powers That Be was actually the right choice for me. Perhaps it had once been, but not anymore.
In my eyes, they were hypocrites and these tyrants were obviously unworthy of being our ruling class.
They weren't so different from the villains they claimed to fight. Therefore, I had to stop them; marking myself as an enemy of the state.

At first, I was terrified by the fact people saw me as a threat, as a villain - but I quickly realized I did not have to change who I am to get what I want.
I could still be a bright-eyed optimistic guy while clawing my way to the top.

So far, it's been working out. I've been gathering followers: both former heroes and fellow villains who had it with the iron-fisted rule of The Powers That Be.

At this point, I truly believe I am the best option to lead this society.
It will be a tough job to get to the top, but I sincerely think I am the lesser of many evils.
