It was a typical day for the quiet house cat. He woke up, stretched his legs, exposed and retracted his claws. He let loose a slight mew, and soft thunder could be heard outside. It continued to rumble in the background as Rain made his way to his food and milk bowls, and it came to a head when the tomcat noticed that he had no milk waiting for him. He let out a solid meow, and storm clouds began to gather on the horizon.
Just as the raindrops were about to come crashing down, his human arrived with milk and unwittingly headed off the brewing storm. As soon as she poured the milk, the cat went for it, eagerly lapping it up before diving into his food bowl.
Once Rain finished eating his food, he started to lick his paws clean, as usual. Once he was done, he started to make his way to the cat tower in the living room, but got distracted by the open door. He looked around for his human. Surely she would realize her mistake and come back to close it, but before he could ponder the thought for too long, he noticed something fluttering outside.
A butterfly!
Ohhhhh, Rain had never played with a butterfly before! All he could ever do was watch the little creatures bustle about from flower to flower. Until now.
Rain raced out the door and sprinted to catch up to his new friend. Once he reached the butterfly, he started to play with it, batting his paws and trying to catch it. Eventually the butterfly caught on and even landed on Rain nose to tease him. But when Rain meowed in surprised and blew his nose to try to shoo the butterfly away, something started to fall from the sky. It was... Snow?
Snow!
Rain had seen snow before, but he'd never gotten to play with it. This was so exciting! Butterflies AND snow! As he frolicked and played with the snowflakes, he got more and more worked up, so much so that he almost didn't notice something caught in his throat. After a while, it became too much, and he had to stop when he developed a coughing fit.
After a few minutes of strenuous hacking up a large, disgusting hairball, he mewed in relief and the air started the get warmer and warmer until the snow stopped. The sunny weather was peaceful, that is, until loud, gruff bark scared the stuffing out of him.
The cat jumped sky high, arched his back, and let loose a shrill screech that hurt the dog's ears so badly it howled for relief. Rain continued to wail while thunderclaps shook the earth beneath him with each scolding meow, and giant raindrops began to fall from the sky. Rain looked around, confused, but when a raindrop hit him square on the nose, he screeched again and shot back inside like a rocket.
It was only after lots of milk, catnip, and cuddles from his human that Rain finally calmed down. Once he began to purr, the rain finally stopped and the storm clouds receded, letting the sun shine again.
Rain nuzzled his human as she held him close. "If I didn't know any better, Rain," she mused, "I'd say you were the one causing all this weird weather with your crazy mood swings."
If only she knew.
