"There we go, darling", she says, cutting the rings that bind one of her eels with a sharp rock. The eel shimmies and stretches his fins, immeasurably glad to be free, then gives Debi a gentle headbutt of gratitude before swimming away. She waves as he disappears into the reef.

With her subject safe and sound, Debi turns her attention back to the rings she cut him out of. Six of them, arranged two by three, made of that translucent white material she associates with the land people. There's been a lot of it in the area lately, much more than usual. That eel wasn't the first she's had to save. What could this piece possibly be for, if not to trap small creatures? But she's seen their huge nets and hooks and harpoons before; she knows that this isn't how land people hunt her kingdom's residents. She runs her finger around one of the uncut circles, thinking.

If it's not for hunting, then...

She looks up. It's dark down here near the ocean floor, but not quite dark enough to hide the silhouette of the boat on the surface.

If it's not for hunting, then it's simple carelessness. Debi hates indifference, the unseen, uncared-about cruelty it causes.

She crushes the plastic packaging in her hand and swims, full speed, towards the shadow on the surface.

Debi hates indifference, but today it is her friend. The humans have thousands of boats, maybe even millions. They will barely notice the loss of one.
