Rubi's past is quite the mistery. Maybe he had an owner at some point in his childhood, maybe he was always a stray. In anyway, life was kind enough to make him the sweetest cat around. He came to my life just at the right time. A friend found him, wandering around her condo. He was sweet, just looking around for some food and pats.

I knew nothing about cats, he was my first. But we connected right away. I befriended him with some fish and patience. In no time he was lying in my lap, belly all exposed. A bundle of love and trust. We connected right away.

He got a bath and flea medicine. He got all his shots. He got the most delicious food I could afford. Yet, something wasn't quite right. Another trip to the vet and a new diagnostic to hear. Rubi had FeLV: Feline Leukemia Virus. A diagnostics as heartbreaking as it sounded. That awful virus was in his body, hiding in his cells until his immunity would go down. At this point, his body would be powerless to stop the virus, which would create all kind of awful tumors.

He would need meds for the rest of his life, to help his immune system. He would need the healthiest food, expensive ones at it too. He would need to always be taken care of, always in the lookout to when his disease would act up. Heartbreaking to hear. Yet Rubi was so sweet, so perfect, so loved. No matter what he had, I would always take care of him.

Rubi was very loved, and even more spoiled. And so so smart! He would do anything for treats, he learned to sit, do handshakes and stand up. Everything for some delicious treat.

He could feel when I needed his support. He would come to me, lay down by my side, and be there for me. If I was particulary nervous, he would put a paw on my arm and look at me, as if he was saying "I'm here for you, everything will be alright". And things were alright, as long as he was with me.

When it hit one year that Rubi was with me, we threw a party for him. Just family was invited, he was shy around people he didn't know! His 6 years party was a sucess, and he loved the treats he got to eat. We put up baloons for him, including one of a 6. We made a cake and some food for the humans around. He wore his beautiful pink dress. It was wonderful.

A couple days later, he went to the vet to take his shots. Again, something wasn't quite right. He had some growths on his mouth. Everything I always feared: his immune system wasn't enough to stop the virus. Everything happened so quickly. He had surgery to remove the growths. He had trouble eating. He needed a feeding tube. In less than a week he died in my arms. He died surrounded by the people he loved. He died full of care and love. My first cat, the one who taught me how to love so deeply.

Rubi was the most perfect baby in the world. I will forever miss him. He will be forever in my heart. Thank you for this whole year of love.
