I adopted Angus from a kill shelter in 2019. He was skin and bones. You could count his vertebrae, he was so thin. The first thing I did was buy him a hamburger and that cemented my place in his life. Immediately, I was his. We went home and he explored the house a little bit, but then promptly flopped down on my legs and napped.
I was so in love.
Our life together was brief - Only three years. But he changed my life. He was a challenge - He ate absolutely everything. Trash wasn't safe. He cut his mouth from trying to eat cans to get any bit of food he could. Getting him up to weight was a struggle, but we managed. The shelter I'd gotten him from claimed he was 6. The vet, three years later, said he was likely much, much older.
He was loving, happily playing with a puppy that was smaller than his head. He brought me presents every time I came home, grabbing the nearest thing and presenting it to me with delight. This ranged from his toys, to a leaf, to the very same puppy. It was a mad dash to grab something, anything so he could give it to me before I got too far in the door. He needed me to know I was loved by him.
I've never met a dog before or since that loved clothing as much as him. He was old, so we got him sweaters in the winter and when he saw them he'd go absolutely nuts, hopping and bounding through the house before ramming into my legs to get me to put it on. Once on, he was back to make the rounds to show everyone his sweater and bask in their praise of how handsome he was.
In 2022 he began having seizures. He lost control of his bowels and went downhill quickly. Barely three years after he'd first come into my life, he was leaving me. He passed surrounded by the people that loved him, wearing his favorite sweater and having sampled a peanut butter cup and one final hamburger.
