the compendium

You walk into an older building, the scent of fresh air from seasons past and paper wafting around you. Towering bookshelves sat in the room like trees, poised like the organized hedges of a maze just waiting for their next curious victim to get lost within their oak throes. Soft yellow light illuminated various spots in the library and in the seemingly vast distance up ahead you could see what looked like natural light shining down below. Rays of soft sunlight disappeared behind a multitude of shelves. Where it cast remain unknown.

The hum of electricity and music that barely graced your eardrums were the only sounds in the building. As you walked forward to investigate your surroundings, you As you walked forward to investigate your surroundings, an odd sensation whispered over your skin. Memories of different eras past echoed along your senses, beckoning you to remember their places, their faces, and their names. Each bookshelf called out to you like a lone bird to an empty forest hoping to summon a mate.

You stopped in your tracks and contemplated a particularly old book near the edge of one of the bookshelves. Its edges were calloused and torn, its spine one more curious reader away frm crumpling under the weight of time. Yet, like with the other literature in the library, it commanded your attention. You took a few cautious steps forward, as if waiting for a sign not to toy with the unknown but before long you found yourself grabbing it off of the shelf and sweeping away the dust that had gathered on its surface. Bound together by a process that time forgot and hope for the newer generation to read its harrowing tales, it boasted a thick leather cover and many pages that outlined the epic within.

"Ogre Battle", it was titled. Simple and to the point. You attempted to turn to the first page, wondering what ancient texts awaited your prying eyes. At once, you were overwhelmed by sight, smell and sound. Swords clanged in your ears and you could taste the copper of blood in your mouth. The stickiness of humidity on your skin. The adrenaline of battle in your heart. Unfolding all around you, a gruesome, horrendous battle, one side consisting of those wearing red and the other side with those wearing blue. You turned around in just enough time to see a fire ball rocketing toward you. In your eyes had been sweat and dust and grit, but now, tears, as you saw your demise. If only you'd not touched that accursed book...!

Impact never came. It went right through you, as if you were a ghost. In fact, now that you took the time to observe your surroundings, you were a ghost. Nobody interacted with you. Nothing hurt you. You didn't exist to these people.

"The Ogre Battle had taken place many years before this conflict unraveled, dear reader," a voice said from the sky. "But another unprecedented war unfolded all too soon after the first, an ugly conflict that left the land of Zetegenia battered, broken, and forever altered."

On the battlefield, five people took on a soft glow.

"This tale recounts the epics of a freshly widowed mother, her mourning son who seeks revenge for his father's untimely death, a knight who stumbles upon his purpose by chance, a fairy who learns humility, and an angel who fights for humanity's right to live and to laugh. Should you wish to experience their journey, step along the lit path before you. If you wish to return to the library, all you need do is return to the light behind you."

You were terrified of the disembodied voice, and the prospect of staying here any longer made your skin crawl. With haste, you returned to the library, standing in the same spot you were when you had gotten absorbed into the book. Everything around you appeared blurry and you were unsure what was left or right.

"Are you just gonna stand there and be confused?"

Your focus was snatched before you could regain it, your eyes now upon a cat that sat in front of you, its expression somehow judgmental. Could cats even emote like that?

"First time here, right?" it asked. It took a glance at your book. "Ogre Battle is a really good one. Personally, I'm a fan of Joseph. I like his no-nonsense attitude. But I think it's a little intense for someone like you. It takes some time to... adjust... to these types of books, y'know?"
