RIP Reggie 2000 - 2012

Reggie was my real life companion who loved me unconditionally for almost 12 years. Late April, 2000 he was flown half way across the country to join my other staffordshire bull terrier Nerri who was 4 months older than him. He took one look at Nerri and decided he was in love but it took Nerri a couple of days to warm up to him and then they were inseparable. While I was at work, they amused themselves by destroying every toy given to them, plus a few ornaments lol, until I learned how to dog proof my poor house!

Reggie was the biggest lovebug on the planet who loved everything and everybody whether they wanted it or not but Nerri was his moon and stars. I lost count of the number of of times Reggie would try to bring me 'presents' like hermit crabs during his long walks on the beach. He didn't care if the present was living or not - he wanted to show me everything he discovered. The only problem was that he had a tendency to get lost in the surf no matter how many times he tried to swim. I learned I had to wear a swimsuit in case he decided it was time to swim to New Zealand because he certainly didn't care if I was dressed for work!

Reggie, Nerri and I spent almost 12 years together flying up and down the east coast of Australia but Cooktown was his special place where he grew up taking long walks in forests or by the water. When we lived on a farm, I discovered that Reggie was obsessed with kangaroos. If one jumped by he would go berserk trying to get to them so I quickly learned to keep him on leash until the coast was clear or he would forget he had a Nerri - roos were the only thing I ever saw that made him forget he had a Nerri to love and protect.

We lost Nerri early in 2012 and Reggie's life would never be the same again. I don't know which of us was more heartbroken but there were times I wished I could howl like Reggie to release the pain. One day though, Reggie decided he had enough of the single life and went on a hunt for a companion. He started bringing other doggies home to us until he found a neighbour who had a puppy just like Nerri. His dognappings became an almost daily event to the point where we had the neighbour's number on standby and thankfully they were extremely understanding.

It didn't take me long to realise how lonely Reggie was so with a heavy heart, I found Reggie a new home with a companion who adored Reggie at first sight and the feeling was mutual. He perked back up and was his happy, loving self going on long walks and even going to work with his new human and new sister. I visited him regularly and he came to my new unit as well until he started to lose the pep in his step. He became unsteady on his feet and was no longer able to keep up with his new sister. He passed away peacefully in his sleep a short while later but he was surrounded by the beings who loved him the most in this world.

RIP Reggie - you will never be forgotten. May we meet again at that rainbow bridge where your sister Nerri is already waiting.
