Until he came, and Tat disappeared. That was an end, and a beginning. Cerise had trouble seeing her color now; there was a lot of gray at this point. Every once in a while, there'd be an edge of silver - like how her mother sobered up, and how he never came back. But the gray was still the underlying current. It was scary to her, and she - ever the sensitive one - became more now, or perhaps less. She became skittish, and more prone to retreating within herself. Never could you have called her talkative or outgoing, but she had been friendly, and a source of love and good energy. Now, that was all shot; she has only fear and confusion left to her.
But at some point, maybe on a day when there was more light than dark, it creeps into her mind that this is not the way that Tat would have it. Tat would not even recognize this tiny, shaking hull; where is the girl who flew through the air with a heart of pure joy during the trapeze lessons that Tat had gifted her? This girl, this gray girl, hasn't even been able to climb higher than the staircase to her room since Tat disappeared, for what would happen if she were to fall? But - and as she thinks this, she plunges into darkness - hasn't she already fallen? Is she not already broken on the ground? This is a terrifying thought, grayer than gray - it is black black black. But then it comes surging back up, through charcoal and slate, granite and heather, dove and smoke and pearl and suddenly it was WHITE and she thinks, "Now I have to go back up."
From that moment on, she seeks to be as brave as Tat always told her she was; she seeks to be as brave as Tat herself. She begs and pleads with her mom to sign her back up for trapeze lessons - and not just a week, like Tat had given her, but real lessons, so she can really learn to fly. It takes saving and work, but her mother feels like she owes her daughter, and is happy to have something to give her. The days are not all easy from her; there is still a lot of gray to wade through. But now, Cerise knows to chase after the light, because it's always on the other side.
Trapeze lessons prove to be the thing that makes her the happiest she can possibly be, now. She pushes herself to learn everything, and when she runs out of things to be taught, she makes up her own tricks, and adds in more: she learns not just trapeze now, but the silk ribbons too. The years go by in this way - always seeking more, always pushing.
The years bring about other changes too. Her mother meets a nice man who is also healing from his own struggles. They now have each other for support. Cerise grows up and remembers how to be friendly; it's a lot like flying. When it comes time for her to decide what comes after school, she is free to choose her own path - there is nothing tying her down, except her own limitations. She decides that she doesn't even want her own limitations to stop her, and signs on fully with a man representing a new circus troupe; Cirque Nuit, he calls it. Normally, Cerise wouldn't just go away with a complete stranger offering something so vague and undefined, but this man's eyes are shining with something she recognizes; it's the light.
Epilogue
What had really sealed the deal for Cerise was the fact that this man - Stars, as the others called him so fittingly - spoke so passionately about this dream of his, and that somehow this passion matched hers exactly. He wanted a place of magic and wonder that brought him his stars; she wanted a place of light in the darkness that brought her her magic and wonder. Immediately she felt a kinship with him - not the relationship that he and Azure had, but more of a right-place-right-time. It felt meant to be. She saw the star tattoos running up and down his arms and thought of Tat, and wondered how her sister had managed to orchestrate something so perfect for her. Protecting her till the end.
And it turned out, Cerise was the best star that circus could have ever had.
