My Story


Passed: June 18, 2008

As a little pup I was called shadow. I never knew my first family much except that they let me run away when I was three. I had no idea where I was going, I just followed my nose. Avoiding the big metal machines the humans call cars, and following the scents and smells around me I came to a big open field where a group of small humans were playing. They looked like fun so I ran over to play with them. One of them ran inside when she saw me and brought out two bigger humans, she called them parents. The little one wanted to play with me so much.

The two parents took me inside their big building the called a home and took a picture. They weren't sure what my name was so they called me Midnight. After a week staying in their home, they brought me a shiny new collar. I think it had my new name on it. I guess this means I get to stay here with them. Wow, I have a new family! Two parents, and two young girls that love to hug me and play with me.

I remember one of the parents saying she was going to have another girl. I stayed by her and gave her lots of kisses all the time until she brought home the new girl she called a baby. I instantly warmed up to her and she became my new playmate. When I was around six, we had to pack the whole house into this moving box. They took me in a car ride that seemed like forever. When we finally stopped, they said we were in Illinois. I don't know what Illinois is, but we got a new home. It was even bigger than the last one!

After we got settled, one of the older girls brought home a new puppy. She was a brighter color than I was, a more white. They called her Chloe. Chloe warmed up to me and i acted as her mother. Chloe always wanted to play with me. She always seemed full of energy, just like I was when I was a pup.

I was now twelve and getting old. I had lots of gray hairs on my face and didn't want to move much. When the family went on their camping trip, I stayed home with Chloe and the oldest girl. When the rest of the family got home, Chloe and I were so excited, I ended up hurting my back legs.

The whole family was really upset to see me hurt like this. They sat in the living room, talking a lot. They got down to the floor with me and loved on me and hugged me so much, all I could do was kiss them and give as much love back to them as i could. I had a feeling they knew how much pain I was in. Finally the father picked me up and carried me to the car, and took me to the doctor. The two youngest girls stayed at home and would not stop crying. I gave them both big kisses and we left. When we got to the doctor the rest of the family loved on me more than i could have ever been loved as a dog. I knew i wasn't going to see them again and to them the same. My time was up here and I had to say goodbye.

The doctor gave me a shot and I was at peace. I wish I could have stayed longer with my loving family but it was my time to go, and now I can watch over them and remind them everyday that I am here with them.
