"Mamo-chan, why are you wearing your old mask?" The general public of Crystal Tokyo might have been startled to hear their beautiful, powerful, ruler address her handsome and regal husband with such a silly nickname in the open halls of the palace, but the more experienced courtiers who did hear as they passed only smiled discreetly behind their hands. At heart Neo-Queen Serenity was still Usagi, vivacious, bubbly, and more interested in helping than in appearances, and of course she'd worry about a change in her Mamoru's behavior. Neo-King Endymion smiled at her, tilting his head slightly as he answered.
"I wanted to show it to Chibi-Usa, is all, and figured I'd wear it rather than crumpling it in my fingers or pocket." His voice was steady, but Neo-Queen Serenity frowned and hurried up to him, almost tripping over her voluminous silk skirts in her rush. She took his hand with one of her own and looked up at his face, stroking his cheek. The skin there was still slightly warm and damp from Neo-King Endymion's distress, and Neo-Queen Serenity's own lip trembled ever so slightly as she realized something was wrong.
"Mamo-chan, what is it?"He took a deep breath and took her fingers into his own, guiding her towards Chibi-Usa's room as he managed to maintain his outwardly untroubled expression. Neo-Queen Serenity blinked and then nodded, containing herself until they got through the elaborately carved wooden door. Initially their daughter had wanted a crystal presence-activated one 'like Mommy has', but it only took a few weeks of Chibi-Usa trying not to cry outside of her own room as it stubbornly refused to acknowledge her before the ashwood alternative was accepted. The magic crystal hinges opened the door to the royal couple automatically, and Mamoru frowned at a thought.
"Do you think we should even be in here without her permission? It is little Usa's room, maybe she's owed some privacy." The Queen's sideways look, and the way she glanced down, fiddling with the tail of her butterfly wing back bow, confirmed his suspicions about the conversation with Sailor Pluto. Usagi knew.
"It isn't her biggest worry right now," she finally answered. "I don't think it would help. We already know... what it will take for her to find herself."
"With all the pain that implies, yes," Mamoru answered, taking off his mask to show his still reddened gaze, eyes still slightly bleary with tears and more welling up as he spoke. "We know now our daughter feels insecure enough that she will eventually endanger the past and almost destroy our present. We will rebuild it, but still, how can you live with knowing? How can I?" He turned away from Neo-Queen Serenity, fist creasing the white material of his old domino mask as he clenched his hands.There was a touch on his shoulder, and for a moment he flashed back to the conversation with Pluto. But Usagi's hand was warm and soothing, and even despite the turmoil in his heart Mamoru smiled as he looked down and saw the chipped nails and pastry crumbs that illustrated Usagi's character so well, rather than the perfect manicure a queen 'should' sport.
"We can live with it because we know she will learn and she will be a happier person for it, and that we will fix it. Everything will turn out all right," she told him confidently. "I know we haven't lived through that part yet, we only know it happens because we saw it as Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, but we also know we won and that Chibi-Usa figured herself out.. Would you really try to change it? Setsuna-san told me that trying to do so would be bad, but even aside from her warning I think I'd rather let everything happen the way it...will? Did? knowing that it all turns out all right. I trust you, and her. I trust all of us." Mamoru sighed, turning his face to nuzzle his cheek against her fingers, but then straightened.
"I suppose so." He turned to give her a kiss and held her close, giving her the chance to blot her own tears out on his lavender lapel. "We'll see each other for dinner?" Usagi nodded.
"I'll catch up with you in just a moment," she told him, and Mamoru saw her pull a clumsily-wrapped package out from the folds of her dress and head towards Chibi-Usa's pillow before he turned to leave the room. He continued out the door and down the shimmering hallway, and it was only when she sensed that he was several corridors down that Usagi let herself speak aloud. "You have suffered the most of all, dear one. You have died so many times, and it is only because I know you recover or come back that I can go on. I would never take the chance that if I change something, the new future might not include you." But Usagi's motions were slow and thoughtful as she tucked the bagged selection of pudding-filled pastries into her daughter's bedspread, and she headed towards the Small Lady's location in the palace when she left the room.
