☿ MIZUNO AMI ☿

"Soldier of Love and Intelligence, the pretty sailor-suited soldier Sailor Mercury! Douse yourself in water and repent!"

.

Mizuno Ami (水野 亜美) is the second of the Sailor Senshi to awaken - the soldier of wisdom and water. When Ami first appears, it's with the reputation for being cold and aloof to everyone who can't match her own brilliant academic standards. But the truth is that Ami is gentle, kind, and shy, and that her high grades are the result of relentless hard work as well as native intelligence. She is walking home alone one day when a black cat with a crescent moon on its forehead drops onto her shoulder from a nearby wall, and the cat's owner is not far behind . . .

Ami is devoted to her friends, and spends several arcs of the series leading their study group so that they can all pass their entrance exams and go to high school together. Ami studies so much, in fact, that she sometimes feels insecure, wondering if there's anything more to herself than her academic talents. As the other girls could tell her (and do), Ami is full of wonderful qualities beyond her brilliance: she is sweet-tempered, gentle, kind, loyal, and hard-working. Ami's dream is to become a doctor like her mother someday, using her abilities to help heal people. She is not without her quirks, of course; Ami can become relentlessly obsessive and single-minded on a goal, and she can be painfully shy. But her friends know that even though it's hard for Ami to speak up, she is always worth listening to.

As Sailor Mercury, Ami may seem to be the weakest of the Senshi at first, with her defensive attack and relative lack of physical strength. But she is an indispensable member of the team -- without Mercury's strategy and quick thinking, the other Senshi would have been helpless against illusions, extradimensional spaces, and seemingly unstoppable enemies. Clever, loyal, and brave, Sailor Mercury fights on with the others for love and justice!

☿ WHAT'S IN A NAME ☿

Ami's name sounds like the phrase 水のアミ, "mizu no ami", which translates to "friend of the water" (with the French loanword ami).

Ami's names in various international translations include Amy (English, Spanish, and Italian); Molly (French); 水野亞美, Suiye Amei (Cantonese); and 유리, Yurie (Korean).

The infamous proposed remake of Sailor Moon by Saban named Ami's counterpart "Blue".

☿ BITS AND PIECES ☿

Ami's birthday is September 10th, making her a Virgo. In astrology, Virgo is ruled by the planet Mercury.

Ami's IQ is rumored to be 300.

She excels in all her studies, but her favorites are math and science.

Ami's hobbies include reading, playing chess, and swimming.

Her favorite food is sandwiches, because she can eat them while she's reading.

She lives with her mother Saeko, a doctor. Ami's father (who lives apart from them) is never named or directly shown, but he is a talented artist who occasionally sends Ami his paintings and drawings from around the world.

In the manga, Ami is extremely wealthy -- she and her mother live in an expensive high-rise, and Ami has a (contemporary) top-of-the-line computer. She's also unconcerned when Minako destroys a diamond ring while testing the Holy Sword, because her mother has so many that she won't miss one.

Because Ami seems so serious-minded, it often surprises people to learn that she also enjoys romance novels and shopping with her friends. She also likes pop culture such as TV dramas and idols -- it was revealed that she was member #0025 of the Three Lights Fan Club, meaning that Ami found out about them and joined long before any of the other girls.

Ami is "allergic" to love letters -- receiving them makes her so stressed and nervous that she breaks out into hives, as shown in the manga chapter/anime special Ami-chan no Hatsukoi ("Ami's First Love").

Ami had the chance to study abroad at a prestigious school in Germany. However, because of her love for her friends and her duty as a Senshi, she chose to stay in Japan.

☿ PRETTY SOLDIER ☿

Sailor Mercury's powers are based around water, mist, and ice. In Japan, the planet Mercury is traditionally associated with the element of water. In the first season her attack is defensive in nature, though she later develops powerful offensive attacks as well.

Her dominant color is blue, with her uniform colors being bright blue and ice blue.

Mercury has some unique items relating to her role as the strategist of the Senshi: she has a tiny supercomputer, shaped like a compact, that was given to her by Luna and which she often uses to calculate where enemies will appear or to help formulate battle plans. She also has a visor that she can activate by touching one of her earrings when transformed, which gives her additional readings on her surroundings.

In the manga, Mercury's original uniform is sleeveless.

Sailor Mercury eventually achieves a more powerful Super form; in the manga, she later achieves Eternal form as well.

In the manga, each of the planetary Senshi is the princess of her own planet and has her own castle, given to her by Queen Serenity. These castles are named after the respective planets' moons. As the planet Mercury has no moon, Princess Mercury's castle is called Castle Mariner, after the Mariner spacecraft which was the first to travel to Mercury.

☿ PRETTY GUARDIAN SAILOR MOON ☿

PGSM is the only series where Ami's appearance drastically changes during her transformation -- Ami has long black hair and often wears glasses, while Mercury has short, light blue hair and does not need glasses.

The "Dark Mercury" arc is unique to the live-action series PGSM. The Dark Kingdom general Kunzite uses Ami's feelings of insecurity to bring her under his control. This corrupted form of Ami is known as Dark Mercury, and she fights against the other Senshi until her love for her friends ultimately heals her.

CLASSIC SEASON/DARK KINGDOM ARC

Transformation Pen: Ami is given her transformation pen by Luna. It allows her to transform into Sailor Mercury with the phrase " Mercury Power, Makeup!" In the manga, her transformation pen appears as a prize from the Sailor V game in Crown Arcade.

Communicator: Disguised as a calculator, this allows Ami to communicate at any time with the other Senshi. They were given to the Senshi by Luna. In the manga, they are wristwatches that appeared as prizes from the Sailor V game, and which Luna modified to serve as communicators.

Mercury Computer: A supercomputer that looks like a small blue compact. Ami can use it to gather data on enemies, track the other Senshi, or formulate battle strategies. It is given to her by Luna.

Mercury Goggle: A blue visor that Sailor Mercury can cause to appear by touching one of her earrings. It allows her to scan and analyze her surroundings and enemies. She can use it alone or together with her computer.

Shabon Spray: This is Sailor Mercury's first magical ability, and is largely used for defense. It creates bubbles that dissolve into a heavy, freezing fog that the Senshi can see through, but enemies can't. Shabon refers to soap bubbles, from the Portuguese loan-word sabão. The equivalent attack in the manga is called Mercury Aqua Mist.

Hyperspatial Sphere Generate: A manga-only technique in which Mercury makes an interdimensional shield/bubble to contain a battle, so that it won't damage the control room beneath Crown Arcade.

R SEASON/BLACK MOON ARC

Star Power Stick: This allows Ami to transform into a more powerful version of Sailor Mercury with the phrase " Mercury Star Power, Makeup!" It is given to Ami by Chibiusa and Mamoru, who receive it from the other Senshi to bring to her before she leaves to study abroad. In the manga, she receives it from Luna, after the Senshis' original transformation pens were destroyed in the final battle against Metallia.

Shabon Spray Freezing: A special version of Ami's attack. It creates a cold fog that encases its target in ice.

Shine Aqua Illusion: Mercury's first purely offensive attack, which allows her to send a spray of magical water and ice at her target.

Shine Snow Illusion: A manga-only attack that uses snowflakes to form a smokescreen, similar to Shabon Spray.

Wrist Communicator: Performs the same function as the earlier communicator, but in the shape of a wristwatch. They are given to the Senshi by Luna and Artemis. The original communicator watches are also replaced with these in the manga.

Sailor Planet Power: A combined attack in which each of the Senshi channel their power, combine it, and direct it in a huge beam of energy. It is sometimes called Sailor Planet Attack.
In the manga, it first appeared in the Dark Kingdom arc, performed by Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus (without Sailor Moon) to attack Metallia.

S SEASON/INFINITY ARC

Mercury Planet Power: In the manga, Neo Queen Serenity grants the Inner Senshi more powerful transformations after they defeat Death Phantom. Ami uses the phrase "Mercury Planet Power, Makeup!" in the Infinity arc to transform into a stronger version of Sailor Mercury; she no longer needs an item to transform at this stage. This version of the transformation never appears in the anime.

SUPERS SEASON/DREAM ARC

Mercury Crystal Change Rod: An upgrade to the Star Power Stick, created by Pegasus with the power of the Golden Crystal. It allows Ami to transform into Super Sailor Mercury with the phrase " Mercury Crystal Power, Makeup!" The Crystal Change Rods appear only in the anime.
An alternate version of this transformation is shown in Ami-chan no Hatsukoi.

Mercury Crystal: Ami's sailor crystal, a heart-shaped stone revealed to her by Guardian Mercury. She uses it to transform into Super Sailor Mercury with the phrase "Mercury Crystal Power, Makeup!" The Mercury Crystal appears only in the manga.

Guardian Mercury: A Sailor Power Guardian, she appears as a small sprite who looks like a tiny version of Sailor Mercury, and refers to herself as Ami's "other self". She resides in Castle Mariner. Guardian Mercury appears only in the manga.

Mercury Aqua Rhapsody: An offensive attack that allows Sailor Mercury to send streams of ice and water at an enemy by playing a magical lyre.

Mercury Aqua Mirage: This attack appears only in the SuperS special Ami-chan no Hatsukoi. Mercury summons a globe of water, which splits into several streams that then engulf her target. Mercury also performs this attack in the Infinity arc of the manga.

SAILOR STARS SEASON/STARS ARC

Star Seed: Star seeds are crystals that are the embodiment of each person's life. In the anime, Ami's star seed is a blue crystal with a glowing core; in the manga, it is the Mercury Crystal.
It is a true star seed (anime) or sailor crystal (manga), the star seed of a planet(/star/asteroid/etc). Being born with a true star seed/sailor crystal enables a person to transform into the Senshi or guardian of that planet.

PRETTY GUARDIAN SAILOR MOON

Jewelry Star Bracelet: A silver charm bracelet that allows Ami to transform into Sailor Mercury with the phrase " Mercury Power, Makeup!" When transformed, the bracelet changes form into a thick jeweled cuff.

Teletia S: A magical cell phone that each of the Senshi has. In addition to being used for communication, it fulfills the same role as the Disguise Pen, allowing the user to wear any outfit by using the phone's camera function to take a picture of it. ( Usagi and Ami use the Teletia S to change their appearance)

Mercury Aqua Mist: An attack that sends an orb of magical water to dissolve its target.

Mercury Aqua Blizzard: An attack that sends snow and ice toward its target, freezing them.

Shine Aqua Illusion: An attack that sends a bolt of magical water towards its target.

Star Tambourine: A star-shaped tambourine that Mercury uses to attack enemies on its own or as part of Moonlight Attractive Attack. She can also transform it into the Mercury Sword.

Mercury Sword: Sailor Mercury can transform her Star Tambourine into a long blue sword with a curved blade.

Water Sword/Ice Sword: Distinct from the Mercury Sword, Sailor Mercury creates this item from a puddle of water in order to fight against Kunzite. When the battle is over, the sword melts.

Dark Jewelry Star Bracelet: When Ami/Mercury is corrupted by Kunzite, the color of her Jewelry Star Bracelet changes, turning from pink and white to blue and black. She still uses this item to transform into Dark Mercury, with the phrase " Dark Power, Makeup!"

Dark Sword: Dark Mercury is able to transform an icicle into a sword.

"One with wisdom must use it for the sake of humanity and the world! I'll cool you down with Mercury power!"
