HINO REI

"The Soldier of Love and Passion, Sailor Mars, will not forgive you! In the name of Mars, I'll chastise you!"

.

Hino Rei (火野 レイ) is the third Senshi to awaken - she is Sailor Mars, the solder of fire and passion. Rei looks cool, reserved, and mysterious, holding herself aloof from everyone. Under that surface, Rei has a quick temper and a drive so intense that most people find her intimidating - and if they aren't put off by her fiery nature, they're frightened by her strange psychic abilities. But the other side of Rei's passion is her total devotion to her cause and her friends. When people start disappearing on the road to the Hikawa Shrine, Rei finds herself encountering a bubbly schoolgirl and her cat, and then her destiny begins to unfold like a spark leaping into flame...

Rei can seem harsh and overbearing, quick to snap at anyone who doesn't live up to her standards. But no one is held to a higher standard than Rei herself. Ambitious, driven, and passionate, Rei has no time to listen to fakers or to coddle anyone's insecurities. Yet when someone truly needs her, they find that Rei is not a raging inferno but a warm and inspiring flame. She gives herself wholeheartedly to the people she loves, willing to face anything to protect them and to do anything to bring out the best in them. It may be hard to get close to Rei, but once you do, you will never have a more devoted friend.

As Sailor Mars, Rei is a powerful and dangerous warrior. Though she is not the leader of the Senshi, she is often the one the others depend on to take on some of the hardest duties. Brave, dedicated, and powerful, Mars' flame burns brightly even in the darkest times as she and the other Senshi fight for love and justice!

WHAT'S IN A NAME

Rei's name sounds like the phrase 火の霊, "hi no rei", which loosely translates to "spirit of the fire".

Rei's names in various international translations include Raye (English and Spanish); Raya (French); Rea (Italian); Rita (Portuguese); 火野麗, Fohye Lai (Cantonese); and 유리 Biki (Korean).

Rei was named Dana in the promo for Saban's infamous proposed remake.

BITS AND PIECES

Rei's birthday is April 17th, making her an Aries. In astrology, the sign Aries is ruled by Mars.

Her favorite color is red and her favorite gemstone is ruby.

She likes Thai food and fugu (blowfish), but dislikes asparagus. In the manga, she dislikes packaged/instant food; however, in the anime, she is shown getting takeout or making packaged meals instead of cooking.

Her favorite subject at school is literature, and her least favorite is social studies.

Her hobbies include fortune-telling, meditation, and singing.

Rei is the only member of the Inner Senshi who attends a different school from Usagi and the others throughout the entire series. She attends a prestigious Catholic girls' school called T*A Academy.

Unlike most of the other characters, Rei is shown writing and performing one of her image songs within the series itself -- she performs "Eien no Melody" at her school's culture festival. (The only other character who performs an image song in-universe is Minako.)

In the manga, Rei is temperamental, but also an elegant, almost aristocratic character. In the anime, while she often tries to project an image of elegance, she displays more immature traits and offbeat interests.

Rei has psychic abilities -- she can sense evil, exorcise demons, and use the temple fire for divination. She is also prone to having visions and prophetic dreams.

The Hikawa Shrine is home to large numbers of crows; Rei often feeds them. She is especially fond two of them, whom she has named Phobos and Deimos after the two moons of Mars (which she does well before being revealed as Sailor Mars), and who will sometimes attack people who intend harm to Rei.

Rei lives at the Hikawa Shrine with her grandfather, the head priest, where she serves as a miko (that is, a priestess - the red and white robes she often wears are the traditional garb of a miko). Her father is a powerful politician, but is not involved in Rei's life as he's too focused on his career, and she is emotionally estranged from him. Her mother died when she was young. (In the anime, while she lives at the shrine with her grandfather, her relationship with her parents is never shown or mentioned.)

In the manga and PGSM, Rei dislikes and distrusts men, at least partially because of her experiences with her father and his underlings. (In particular, she experienced a mutual attraction to one of her father's secretaries, but he chose to marry someone advantageous to his political career, rather than risk it by being in a relationship with Rei.)

In the anime, Rei is much more interested in men and briefly dates Mamoru, before his and Usagi's past relationship is revealed. Kumada Yuuichirou, her grandfather's apprentice (an anime-only character), has an enormous crush on Rei; she shows intermittent interest in him, but he disappears from the series altogether by the end of the SuperS season.

PRETTY SOLDIER

Sailor Mars' powers center around fire. They often incorporate traditional Japanese elements as well (Shinto exorcisms, Buddhist mandalas, and kyuudo, traditional Japanese archery). In Japan, the planet Mars is traditionally associated with the element of fire. The Greco-Roman deity Ares/Mars was the god of war, which may explain Rei's prickly temper.

Her dominant color is red, and her uniform colors are red and purple.

Mars' uniform includes high heels instead of boots, and earrings with star-shaped dangles instead of studs. In the manga, her original uniform also has a gemstone accent set at the waist.

Sailor Mars eventually powers up to become Super Sailor Mars; in the manga, she later achieves Eternal form as well.

In the manga, each of the planetary Senshi is the princess of her own planet and has her own castle, given to her by Queen Serenity. These castles are named after the respective planets' moons. Mars' castle is named Castle Phobos-Deimos, after the two moons of Mars.

PRETTY GUARDIAN SAILOR MOON

PGSM was unique in that it significantly changed the physical appearance of the girls during transformation -- Rei's hair turned from brown to black and grew much longer.

Rather than focusing on Rei's relationship with Usagi (as the anime usually did), PGSM tended to focus on Rei and Minako's relationship (as the manga did); Rei was entrusted with Venus' weapons.

CLASSIC SEASON/DARK KINGDOM ARC

Transformation Pen: Rei is given her transformation pen by Luna. It allows her to transform into Sailor Mars with the phrase " Mars Power, Makeup!" In the anime, Luna leaves Rei's transformation pen at the Hikawa Shrine for Rei to find; in the manga, she gives it to Sailor Mercury to bring to Rei.

Communicator: Disguised as a calculator, this allows Rei to communicate at any time with the other Senshi. They are given to the Senshi by Luna. In the manga, they are wristwatches that appeared as prizes from the Sailor V game, and which Luna modified to serve as communicators.

Ofuda: A strip of paper with the phrase "Akuryou Taisan" ("Evil spirit, disperse!" or "Evil spirit, be exorcised!") written on it. In Japan, ofuda are wards or charms sold at Shinto shrines and temples. Rei/Mars can use ofuda to focus her spiritual powers, or to halt an evil being in its path.

Akuryou Taisan: The "attack" Rei uses with her ofuda. She can use it in civilian form or as Sailor Mars; it can immobilize enemies or nullify their attacks.
The full chant she uses -- "Rin pyou tou sha kai jin retsu zai zen" -- is a mantra meaning "Celestial soldiers, descend and arrange yourselves in front of me". The deity that appears in the background is Fudo-Myoo, who is said to protect mankind and burn away obstacles.

Divination: Rei is able to use the sacred fire in the shrine to help her see through illusions and to see visions.

Fire Soul: Mars' first attack, which creates a huge fireball that she can direct at her target.

R SEASON/BLACK MOON ARC

Star Power Stick: This allows Rei to transform into a more powerful version of Sailor Mars with the phrase " Mars Star Power, Makeup!" It is given to her by Luna and Artemis. In the manga, she receives it from Luna after her original pen is destroyed in the final battle against Metallia.

Fire Soul Bird: A special version of Fire Soul. Mars first uses an ofuda and then her magical attack; the fireball engulfs the ofuda and takes the shape of a phoenix, which is capable of following a target and dodging counterattacks. (The phoenix motif later returns in a Stars episode, shown as a symbol that was important to her from her childhood.)

Burning Mandala: Mars' second main attack, in which she creates a ring of flame that takes the form of a mandala showing the eight corners of the world; it then turns into multiple rings of fire that Mars can direct toward her target.

Wrist Communicator: Performs the same function as the earlier communicator, but in the shape of a wristwatch. They are given to the Senshi by Luna and Artemis. The original communicator watches are also replaced with these in the manga.

Sailor Planet Power: A combined attack in which each of the Senshi channel their power, combine it, and direct it in a huge beam of energy. It is sometimes called Sailor Planet Attack. In the manga, it first appeared in the Dark Kingdom arc, performed by Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus (without Sailor Moon) to attack Metallia.

S SEASON/INFINITY ARC

Mars Planet Power: In the manga, Neo Queen Serenity grants the Inner Senshi more powerful transformations after they defeat Death Phantom. Rei uses the phrase "Mars Planet Power, Makeup!" in the Infinity arc to transform into a stronger version of Sailor Mars; she no longer needs an item to transform at this stage. This version of the transformation never appears in the anime.

Mars Snake Fire: A manga-only attack in which Sailor Mars creates a serpent made of fire, which attacks her target.

SUPERS SEASON/DREAM ARC

Mars Crystal Change Rod: An upgrade to the Star Power Stick, created by Pegasus with the power of the Golden Crystal. It allows Rei to transform into Super Sailor Mars with the phrase " Mars Crystal Power, Makeup!" The Crystal Change Rods appear only in the anime.

Mars Crystal: Rei's sailor crystal, a heart-shaped stone revealed to her by Phobos and Deimos. She uses it to transform into Super Sailor Mars with the phrase "Mars Crystal Power, Makeup!" The Mars Crystal appears only in the manga.

Phobos and Deimos: In the manga, Phobos and Deimos briefly take on a humanoid form, appearing as young women, and reveal that they are Mars' guardians (much as Luna, Diana, and Artemis are guardians/advisors -- however, while the cats originally come from planet Mau, Phobos and Deimos come from Coronis, the same planet as Lead Crow).

Guardian Mars: A Sailor Power Guardian, she appears as a small sprite who looks like a tiny version of Sailor Mars, and refers to herself as Rei's "other self". She resides in Castle Phobos-Deimos. Guardian Mars appears only in the manga.

Mars Flame Sniper: An attack in which Mars creates a bow and arrow of flame and shoots a fiery arrow toward her target. (NB: Arrows and kyuudo (Japanese archery) have traditional associations with Shintoism.)

SAILOR STARS SEASON/STARS ARC

Star Seed: Star seeds are crystals that are the embodiment of each person's life. In the anime, Rei's star seed is a red crystal with a glowing core; in the manga, it is the Mars Crystal.
It is a true star seed (anime) or sailor crystal (manga), the star seed of a planet(/star/asteroid/etc). Being born with a true star seed/sailor crystal enables a person to transform into the Senshi or guardian of that planet.

PRETTY GUARDIAN SAILOR MOON

Jewelry Star Bracelet: A silver charm bracelet that allows Rei to transform into Sailor Mars with the phrase " Mars Power, Makeup!" When transformed, the bracelet changes form into a thick jeweled cuff.

Teletia S: A magical cell phone that each of the Senshi has. In addition to being used for communication, it fulfills the same role as the Disguise Pen, allowing the user to wear any outfit by using the phone's camera function to take a picture of it. ( Rei uses the Teletia S to change her appearance)

Akuryou Taisan: In PGSM, Akuryou Taisan is an attack in which Mars sends streams of fire and ofuda towards her target.

Youma Taisan: This attack creates a thick beam of magical fire.

Burning Mandala: This is similar to the anime's Burning Mandala, but it sends a single burst of flame instead of multiple rings of fire.

Star Tambourine: A star-shaped tambourine that Mars uses to attack enemies on its own or as part of Moonlight Attractive Attack. She can also transform it into the Mars Dagger.

Mars Dagger: Sailor Mars can transform her Star Tambourine into a long red dagger. It works as a pair with the Venus Dagger.

"The Guardian of Fire and Passion, Sailor Mars! You will refrain from underestimating women! And with Mars power, you will burn! These high-heeled legs will deliver your punishment!"
