Those are the qualities anyone in Egypt would list about their beloved pharaoh Cheops. He was responsible for the construction of The Pyramid of Giza, one of the most important pyramids known to man.

And yet, such a huge accomplishment did not inflate his ego.

Sitting in the shade of his solar barque, all he could think about was taking a bath in warm milk and then smoking from his exquisite hookah pipe. Sighing in longing, he began to daydream and long for home when his servant said,

"Your majesty, we are almost entering the village."

Snapping out of his reverie, he pondered the crisis he was about to witness - a man accused of treason of his own people. He hated when his people were caused trouble or pain - it troubled him immensely. His people loved him, and they placed their faith in him. Even though a normal person would become easily stressed by this, he was not stressed at all.

"Your majesty, we have arrived." His servant said, stopping at the water entrance.

Taking a deep breath, he stepped out of the barque into the hot sun, and began walking to the village meeting place, since it was not that far. Looking around, he could not help but smile at his kingdom. Even in the negativity of crime, people were smiling and happy and full of laughter.

“Um we need to make haste, your majesty.”

Cheops went back to the task at hand, following his servant to the jailhouse square to see a crowd of people around a raised wooden platform, where he could see three figures upon it. As he moved closer, he could recognize the executor and the wronged, but once he saw the accused, his face froze in surprise.

He knew the accused very well. Runihura, an old-time childhood friend of his.To see him as the one he was giving the final judgment on hurt Cheops dearly. Shoving his pain down inside his heart, he stepped up.

“Majesty, we have requested your judgement on this trial, for we have not been able to come up with one our own.” The executor spoke.“Please present the case.” Cheops replied.

“This man was caught communicating with our rivaling land. And when I caught him, he attacked me, and then threatened to take my life afterwards. Ever since then, belongings and people have been stolen, and it’s all due to this man!”

Cheops looked at the accused, searching his eyes.

“Is this true?”

“Yes. It is. I collaborated with the rivaling lands to do the wrongdoings. I do not know why, Cheops, but I did.”

Cheops gasped as the accused called to him with his name. He hesitated. Could he take this man's life? His friend? Or now, his enemy? He must make a just ruling, but at what expense?

“... Then as much as this pains me, I sentence you to a life of strenuous labor without pay with the inmates.”

And as the cheers of the crowd rang his ears, his heart filled with sadness as the guards took his old friend away.

But, as he already knew before, being the pharaoh was not easy. As he was led back to his solar barque, he was still filled with pride to be Egypt’s pharaoh.
