ACT I
His mother, Hesper, gave him the name “Tariqâ€, meaning “wandering starâ€. Hesper herself had been named after a star; it seemed only fitting to carry on the tradition. So it truly felt like the stars were guiding him his whole life, and he wasn’t so surprised with the turn of events his life took, carrying him to the cosmos. He only wished there had been a less painful way to do it.
He’s still not sure how he ended up broken and in pain in a hospital bed in Alaska; the doctors said the memory might come back, but maybe it wouldn’t. All he knew was that he was born in Turkey, had been living in England, going to university there - and then he woke up somewhere cold, after having seen the most extraordinary things. The doctors told him he died; for a full minute and a few seconds, they recorded no vital signs. Tariq says that, for a full minute and a few seconds, he lived.
Stars; he saw stars. He saw the heavens and the earth splayed out around him, swirling in the cosmic void, layers of indigo and cobalt and jet and milky opal wisps playing tricks in front of him. He was cloaked in moonlight, and embraced by night. There was something deeper than silence; a thrum inside him that wasn’t quite a noise but more than mere feeling…a recognition, perhaps? He couldn’t be sure; he couldn’t even be sure of himself not being sure. It was like he was everything and nothing at once, too big to spend time on such internal processes but not even important enough to disregard. All he was able to be conscious of was…everything.
And then it was gone.
Tariq was brought back down, and it was sickening and confusing and exhilarating. He felt himself again, which was too big for words in opposite ways – glorious and depressing at once. What was better than life? But what was better than death? Which was entirety and which was nothingness? All Tariq knew from that moment onward was that he needed the stars back. If death would not yet have him, he had to bring the stars to life.
The idea came to him slowly, and then all at once, aided by the arrival of a captivating young woman. He didn't mean to tell her so much, but with her, his sheet of charisma and charm could fall, and he could just be. It was the only thing that made him feel happy to still be alive. She put the earth back under his feet, gave him stability...yet every once in a while he felt that maybe - just maybe - if he stared into the blue of her eyes long enough - he might be transported back to the stars.
In any case, it was she who solidified the idea that began as nothing more than a musing, a mere notion that he liked to play with and shape like Play-dough in his head, molding and remolding, until it began to actually look like something real. He started with the simple concept of bringing the stars back to him. Simple in thought, but as vast as the heavens themselves to put into motion; he did not have a clue as to how to do this. But the sense that he had to was constant. It felt like someone was incessantly whispering in his ear, "Remember them. Do not lose them. Gather it up. Gather them all up." He wasn't even sure what those words meant, exactly, but for some reason, they were in his head. Gather them up. Okay then. He would gather them up.
When he met Azure, it felt like those words in his head lit up, and he was compelled to talk to her, to learn about her life. She was so easy to talk to, and when he learned of her horse-training and her knack for style and showmanship, something swam into the forefront of his mind. He knew immediately that he needed her and her talents to make his dream come true. He just didn't realize yet that he needed her for more than that.
ACT II
Love is a funny thing; he felt it in a vague but comforting sort of way for his family, and he used to feel it in a more consuming way for his studies, but since his near-death experience, that had all been pushed away by the constant throbbing ache in his soul for the heavens. The fire in Azure's eyes was the first thing that had captured his attention since then, and slowly that fire grew in his own heart.
He followed her, of course. Once he was out of the hospital and able to move on, he decided to move on with her. He helped her with her horses and together they began performing shows, using his image of the cosmos as a guide. It was so natural, extending off their first meeting and Tariq's happy thrill when he first saw her showing off some of her tricks. From there it morphed so easily into a show that it seemed crazy they had never done anything like this before. The locals loved it so much that they actually encouraged the pair to take it further, and that's what they did. They began traveling, and it was Azure who began following Tariq as he felt the stars call him from one place to another. Everywhere they went, magic happened; audiences felt transformed and transported, and Tariq and Azure grew closer. The stars became a constant glow in the back of his head, and things felt mostly right…
…mostly. He was generally so happy that even thinking otherwise seemed like blasphemy against whatever or whoever was responsible for all these good things in his life; yet there was still something inside his mind that compelled him to "Gather them up". Something was still missing, and if the blossoming nebulae in his dreams were any indication, it was something pink.
Azure found her, of course. She somehow convinced him to go to a fortune-teller with her, for fun, after one of their shows. The gypsy had made them drink tea and then hand her their cups. Azure loved it, but Tariq had to try really hard to hold in his eye-rolling. Still, even he was surprised when the fortune-teller looked up and met his eyes with hers, crystal clear, and told him she had been waiting for him.
"The one you seek is soaring like a comet through space," she said, then turned to Azure and said, "You will find her first, and she will need you, just as he did," nodding her head toward Tariq. She turned back to him and said softly, "Gather them up."
He froze. "What?"
The gypsy shook her head and said, "That's just what I heard. 'Gather them up.'"
Two days later, Azure came rushing to Tariq after having gone out to get food.
"I found her."
ACT III
Her hair was the color of the summer sun and her name was the pink that swam in Tariq's mind; Cerise was swinging on a trapeze when he and Azure finally got to her. They sat and watched her, captivated by her dizzying movements and death-defying stunts that mimicked the swirling of the galaxies. Tariq grasped Azure's hand and said, "She is meant to join us," and Azure nodded, feeling it too. As beautiful as the young girl was swinging from bar to bar, there was something inexplicably fragile and sad about her too, and Azure felt instinctively that they could help her. In fact, being here and connecting, the three of them, pulled together by tea leaves and shooting stars and the thread of a thought urging them to gather - it felt like destiny.
