Father, I feel so alone
Sleepless, I dream of the day when you were by my sidePrince Archo was one of the most fearless explorers of all time. He left the Fire Kingdom, his home, at a very young age, his dream was to explore the world, and his father, the king, had supported this dream. He gave Archo his best ship, and the finest crew in the Fire Kingdom. His parting words to his son were "Go, brave one, you were destined for greatness. Out there, you will find it".
Find it he did. Archo had encountered the dangers that Subeta had to offer, but also the wonders. There had been treacherous sea beasts, Cyclops, Sirens, Assassins, Monsters, and about every other peril imaginable. There had been good times as well, late nights at bars with his crew, the discovery of treasure, and the women. He'd met more beautiful women than the average man could ever want. Archo never touched them, though. His heart belonged to a girl back home. He secretly believed that the reason he cheated death time and time again was the promise he'd made to return to her. It was a foolish thought, of course.
However, at home things hadn't been going so well. His father was a compassionate parent but a ruthless conqueror. He'd made it his life's work to expand the Fire Kingdom into the sprawling Ice Kingdom. The Ice Queen was just as stubborn as he was though, refusing to give up to the flames. The two kingdoms had been at war ever since Archo had left. He figured it would blow over by the time he returned home.
He was wrong...
"But... how ?" Archo asked, his heart sinking deeper in his chest. Breaking bottles and booming laughter from his shipmates came from the brightly-lit tavern behind him. But Archo's party mood had evaporated into the chilly night air.
"It's true, sire! I just got the word! Officially... I mean, currently... you're the king."
If Archo hadn't been told the news by his father's own right-hand man, he would've never believed it. He may have been suspecting something amiss home, he'd been sailing in the direction of the Fire Kingdom lately. After years of being gone, he did want to pay a visit to his home. But not like this.
"Your majesty...?" the vizier asked trying to bring him back to the conversation.
"And what am I supposed to do about it?"
"You must know how the spell works, your majesty."
Archo did know how the spell worked. It was ancient magic of the Ice Kingdom, one that hadn't been used in years. When a war had been going on for too long, the Ice Queen would turn into a block of ice and temporarily freeze herself and the ruler of the feuding kingdom. The first-born of each ruler replaced them. The two first-born would continue to fight the war until one of them was dead. At that point, the spell was broken and the parents would thaw and be returned to power. The winner of the war was determined by whichever ruler still had their eldest child. It was brutal, but effective.
Archo just happened to be the Fire King's first-born.
"You remember Princess Druxy, right? The eldest daughter of the Ice Queen? Sire, she is weak! She spends all day in that tower, admiring herself! She doesn't have the skill or experience you have, she'll be so easy to-!"
"NO!" Archo roared. "There must be another way. I will not kill the princess!"
"But sire...! We could finally win this war! You have no idea what the kingdom has been through since you've been gone!"
Archo snarled and bounded away from the vizier, towards the deep jungle. Jovial laughter from the tavern trailed after him, a bitter reminder that even his shipmates, who had been with him through so much, could not help him now.
"You must kill the princess, King Archo!! It is the only way!"
---
It must have been an hour until he stopped running. The sun was completely set at this point, he'd passed the jungle and wound up in an open field, perfect for pacing. The crickets were noisy here, but all he could hear were the last words of the vizier.
Of all the children the Ice Queen had... why did it have to be Druxy? Why did she have to be the eldest?
"Hehehehe... you're funny looking," came a giggly childish voice from above.
"Who said that?" snarled the young Tigrean cub with short, stubby legs. He'd been walking along a deserted forest path in the fire kingdom. Well, he THOUGHT it was deserted.
The sky was red as it always was, the ground was littered with dried leaves and dirt. The skinny trees above grew burnt-red leaves, and they were the only ones that could survive in such heat. These trees became rarer and rarer as one approached the burning heart of the Fire Kingdom, where the beautiful molten castle resided and, inside, all the Fire Kingdom's royalty.
"I did!"
Archo felt four paws land on his back from above, his legs buckled and he landed in the dirt. He whipped his head around, but the threat was gone. All that was behind him was a crow pecking around on the dirt path looking for food. He jumped back to his feet, braced for attack.
"My dad taught me how to fight!" he looked above in the tree where he'd heard the voice, "I'm just warning you! Don't try anything!"
"Hehehehehe"
Archo spun around and found himself face to face with a young, white Popoko. Her face was split into a wide smile and her blue eyes sparkled with mischief.
Archo straightened himself immediately.
"Ma'am, I'm going to have to leave me alone, I'm on official business for the Fire King... Hey-! What're you doing...?! stop that!"
She was on his back again playing with his crown.
"It's so big and your head is so tiny!" she giggled, batting at it "Does your daddy know took this?"
She removed it from his head and put it on her own and pranced around him with her head held in the air, nose upturned smugly.
"It's mine now!" she squealed. "Hehe!"
"Hey! Stop thief! That is official property of the Fire Kingdom!"
She giggled and scurried up a tree with typical Popoko ease.
"Get back here! Come on, my dad will kill me if I lose that!" he put his two front paws on the trunk and shook it with his entire weight. The crown dropped on his head with a loud THUNK
"OW!"
"I like you!" the fluffy white popoko said, and she was right in front of him again, watching as he struggled to straighten his crown out and fix his small tuft of mane.
"You're lucky I don't have you arrested," he snarled
He jumped slightly when she started nuzzling her head under his neck. Her body was freezing cold.
"What're you... doing?"
"We're gonna be friends from now on, okay?" She said it in a sweet tone but it was not a question.
"Oh... okay..."
And friends they had been, up until he left to sail across the world.
She nuzzled under his neck like she'd done the very first time they'd met. He'd never gotten used to how cold she was over the years, he suspected it was the same for her with his surprising heat.
"I'm really going to miss you," she said, burying her face in his fur. Her low temperature made him shiver, but he refused to let his teeth chatter.
"I'll miss you too," he said. They'd both grown up some, he'd nearly tripled his size since cubhood, the crown fit his head much better now. She had a blue stripe running down her body now, the color of frozen water, and deadly sharp horns on her head. She couldn't visit the Fire Kingdom anymore because of the sheer heat, they had to meet at the edge of the Ice Kingdom, where the temperature was not too extreme for her. She was much more sensitive to her opposite element than he was.
"Promise me, you won't find someone else out there?"
He laughed at such a preposterous question, but she looked at him with those same piercing blue eyes, demanding to be taken seriously.
"There is nobody that I could possibly replace you with... And even if there was, I wouldn't. I couldn't." He wrapped a paw around her and pulled her in closer. It had begun snowing, but that wasn't the reason everything seemed to be sparkling.
It was her. She made everything around her shine with life. Though it was against nature for them to even be friends, he hadn't been able to control his feelings for her. And when his father had forbidden their friendship, it only made him want to see her more. So here he was, a Reborn Tigrean standing at the edge of an icy domain freezing his tail off with a fluffy Popoko princess pressed against his chest. Love was ridiculous sometimes.
"Promise me," she said, "promise me someday that you'll come back? I don't care if it's months, years, or so long you think I'll have forgotten all about you, promise that you'll come back."
"I promise, Princess Druxy. I promise I'll come back to you."
That had been... how many years ago? Five? Ten? It couldn't be more than ten, but he had no idea. He could still vividly remember what she looked like. He still remembered the feel of her fur, and the trembling he felt whenever she pressed her ice-cold body up against his.
And what was his kingdom expecting of him now? To murder her? To destroy the one person he thought about on those long nights staring up at the stars? He always wondered if she was staring at the same ones, wondered if she was thinking of him too.
He checked left and right for anyone spying on him
"Icht sane power of flame
Show me the one I say by name."
At that moment the tip of his tail ignited and a fireball flew from it and floated in front of him, waiting for his instruction. It was illegal to use the power of fire outside the kingdom unless you were a solider, but he supposed he was the king now, what did it matter?
"Show me my father," he mumbled. Instantly, the flames in front of him shifted to show his father, a powerful Tigrean with a look of fury on his face, surrounding him was a block of clear ice that must have been the Ice Queen. The surroundings were hazy, but Archo could see that they were in the castle. His people must have been moved there because it was the hottest place in all the Fire Kingdom. Clearly, no amount of heat could melt them, though. There was only one thing that could melt them...
"Now..." he said, "show me Druxy, Princess of the Ice Kingdom."
The image of his father went up in flames, when they settled, there was an image of Druxy. She'd grown up a bit more, he suspected she was still much smaller than him though. Just seeing her after all these years made his heart race. She was sitting on a frozen throne in what was probably was the Queen's chamber. She looked haughty up there, but he knew her too well to be fooled. That was the last place in the world she wanted to be. He could relate.
He reached out to touch her, but the image evaporated, and he was left grasping at the dust. He sighed.
"Oh, Father," Archo looked up at the stars for guidance, " do you see the mess you've left me in? What am I supposed to do?"
The stars were silent as ever and Archo knew he was truly alone.
