The island in the sky is known as Paradus and all children of winged immortal creatures, from the tiny wood nymph to the newly hatched dragon must spend a season of youth on its shores. A peace truce exists between them all, regardless of their natures. No creature on those shores may harm another and all must take the lessons Freedom has to offer.

Not even the lesser gods can claim to know the true origins of the paint Pegasus charged with imparting knowledge on the protectors - and provocateurs - of the skies. She knows every story ever spoken, written, or dreamed. It does not matter what manner of intelligent being originated the tale. She is no less interested in the made-up adventures of a village child than she is in the epic boasts of the Lord of Thunder. True or false, magnificent or meek, long or short, if it is a story, it will find a place in the winged horse's boundless memory.

She knows instinctually which stories a particular youth most needs to hear. Young angels often hear tales of misplaced pride while griffins learn the folly of placing beauty before honor. Dragons get impatient if they must listen to the same story twice though their cousin the cockatrice will listen in fascination to the same tale as it is told thrice.

She is not always serious, though. There are days when Freedom delights in telling stories that are downright silly, setting the youngsters in her care to laughing uncontrollably. The phoenix has a laugh like a bell while fey children make the very air shimmer with their airy giggles.

In the off season when the young ones move on to their native lands to finish growing up, Freedom trots every inch of Paradus, her magical hooves restoring plant life that has felt the scorch of flame and the claws of many little feet. A single breath from the Pegasus can bring exotic new bushes to life while a flick of her tail will send a gentle rain to nourish them. The white roses in her mane never wilt and it is said that a drop of dew from one of their hearts can bring a mortal back to life. It may never be known if this is true as no mortal may ever set foot on Paradus.
