His name comes from the word Cataclysm: a violent upheaval, especially one of a social or political nature.
He grew up in a city that had a strong attendance in the Battle Colosseum. Their way of life revolved around becoming the strongest warrior. The champion was given fame and fortune and would become the one who would lead the city until he could no longer defend his title.
Kataclis was enthralled by this. He wanted to have the kind of authority the leader had, and he was willing to fight to obtain it. His parents enrolled him at a young age into the sparring arena, but he was smaller than most of the other children, and he wasn't able to keep up. Then a bad injury kept him from participating in the arena for the next two years, and he was held back.
Frustrated that he couldn't rejoin his class, Kataclis left the city, vowing to get stronger on his own terms. When he did, he promised to return and challenge the new champion for his title. His bossy attitude, arrogance, and commanding nature was met with ridicule in the city... his parents wouldn't even defend him since he couldn't prove himself in the arena. "All talk" his classmates would say.

It had been four months since he had met the silent Kumos in the woods. He hated to admit it, but she was dangerously close to surpassing him in everything but brute strength. Her endurance and speed seem to come almost naturally for her. While he trained hard, sometimes forgetting to eat and cutting back on sleep, she trained at a slower pace and was still able to keep up with him.
He couldn't believe how quickly the Kumos picked up on fighting. It wasn't long before he found himself struggling to stay ahead of her. Unlike him, she seemed to have a natural ability. He was a bit frustrated that what had taken him years of training to build up his strength had only taken her a few weeks.
This was good... he told himself. He needed someone who would push him to become stronger. He knelt next to a small stream and splashed some water on his face. There was still another four hours until sundown... he still had plenty of daylight left to train.
Splish Splash
Someone was running through the water. He looked up in time to see what looked like an orange ball of fire coming his way. He quickly got to his feet, readying himself to fight if the need arose. The fire-creature was a reborn Clawsion who seemed to be intent on following the entire length of the stream.
"Hey, you!" he called as the creature bounded past him, splashing water everywhere. "Stop right there!"
Much to his surprise the Clawsion did stop. This gave him even more confidence in himself. Keeping his head held high and his shoulders straight, he approached the fire creature as it turned to face him.
"What do you think you're doing running around splashing like that?" Kataclis demanded.
"Oh sorry," the Clawsion apologized. "I was just following the stream."
"Why?" Kataclis looked him up and down. "Aren't you a fire thing?"
"Well yeah, but I've always loved the water."
"And once you reach the end of this water source, what do you plan on doing then?"
The Clawsion looked at him puzzled. "You know... I haven't really thought about it... I guess I'll just find another body of water somewhere and hang around there for a while."
Kataclis frowned and folded his arms across his chest. "How about you work for me instead?"
The flaming creature blinked. "What do you mean?"
"It just so happens I've been looking to hire a couple of good lackeys," Kataclis explained. "You're strange, but you'll do. All you have to do is listen to whatever I say and complete any tasks I give you. It's not a hard job."
"Um... Ok... it's not like I'm doing anything else I guess..." the Clawsion tentatively agreed. "But I can still play in the water right?"
Kataclis turned away and smiled smugly to himself. His smirk quickly faded and he cleared his throat before he answered, "I don't care what you do in your spare time."
A week after encountering Drencher in the woods, Kataclis found a gross mass of rotting flesh called Epidemia who was sitting high up in a tree. He offered her the same thing he'd offered Drencher, and since she had nowhere else to go, she accepted.
